Favorites to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year

The top of the market is dominated by edge rushers, with defensive ends and outside linebackers making up the first 13 players in the betting.

Micah Parsons (+100) | EDGE | Dallas Cowboys

Parsons enjoyed an eye-catching first year in the NFL in 2021, finishing with 84 tackles and 13 sacks to win Defensive Rookie of the Year as a unanimous choice, securing 50 of 50 votes.

He was also named to the Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro after falling just two sacks short of the rookie record.

Parsons’ performances saw him finish second in the voting for Defensive Player of the Year, although his five votes were some distance from the winning tally of 42.

Myles Garrett (+1200) | EDGE | Cleveland Browns

Garrett has developed into one of the best pass rushers in the league in recent seasons and registered his best year to date in 2021.

The Cleveland Browns defensive end racked up a career-high 16 sacks and 51 tackles, although he did not receive a single vote for Defensive Player of the Year.

Garrett will be hoping to change that as the Browns seek a return to the playoffs after missing out in 2021.

Aaron Donald (+1400) | DT | Los Angeles Rams

Donald may not have won Defensive Player of the Year in 2021, securing just three votes, but he did win his first championship ring as the Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.

The 31-year-old played a starring role in that game, registering two sacks and a game-winning tackle on 3rd & 1 with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter.

Donald is one of just two players to win DPOY three times, doing so in 2017, 2018, and 2020, and would be the first to win a fourth if he tops the voting in 2022.

T.J. Watt (+7500) | EDGE | Pittsburgh Steelers

Having been a losing finalist for this award in 2019 and 2020, Watt finally won it last season, securing 42 of 50 possible votes.

The Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker had an incredible year, tying Michael Strahan’s regular season sack record of 22.5 despite missing two games through injury.

Watt also signed a contract extension worth $112m over four years in 2021, making him the highest-paid defensive player in the league.

Who will win NFL Defensive Player of the Year 2022-2023?

Pass rushers have dominated the voting for Defensive Player of the Year over the last 10 years, with inside linebacker Luke Kuechly and cornerback Stephon Gilmore the only two anomalies.

The statistic that tends to sway voters the most is sacks, so it makes sense to look at edge rushers when betting on this award.

That doesn’t necessarily help too much considering that the 13 players at the top of the market all fall within that category, but there are a few players who will likely dominate the betting.

The first is obviously the reigning DPOY, T.J. Watt (+7500), who is in the prime of his career after equalling the single-season sack record of 22.5 in 2021.

The second is the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year, Micah Parsons (+100), who should get even better after a stellar rookie season and is a more tempting price.
