Novak Djokovic breezed through the first round of the 2024 Australian Open, and will now face 24 year old Aussie Alexei Popyrin in the next round.

Djokovic was the favorite in our best bets for the Australian Open, and the favorite with the oddsmakers. That won’t come as a surprise considering he’s won the tournament on 10 separate occasions, including the last four times that he featured.

Let’s look at the Serbian’s Australian Open Round two matchup with Popyrin, and the odds for the two competitors.

Novak Djokovic vs Alexei Popyrin Preview

Australian born Alexei Popyrin is not shying away from his underdog matchup with Novak Djokovic in the slightest. He currently has Australian Open tennis odds of +1400 to win, but he’s not backing down.

Popyrin was born in Sydney, Australia, to Russian parents, and is playing in the Australian Open for the 7th time in his career.

Up until this point, his best finish has been the third round, reaching it three times in 2019, 2020 and last year in 2023. He reached his career high ranking of 39 in October of 2023, and now feels more confident than ever that he can give Novak a real challenge.

In the opening round of the competition Popyrin took down fellow Australian Marc Polmans in straight sets. He smashed 20 aces and never had his serve broken in the entirety of the match.

Now he’ll play the world number one and current Australian Open champion, who has won the tournament four times in the last five years. Novak Djokovic has gone from strength to strength in the later years of his career and might have won this tournament five times in a row had it not been for his deporting prior to the 2022 competition.

Djokovic comes into the Australian Open in glistening form, having won the last four tournaments he featured in since losing in the final at Wimbledon. Since then, he’s won the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open, the Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour Finals, taking down some of world tennis’ elite amidst his winning rampage.

24 year old Popyrin has nothing to lose and is going into the event with the utmost confidence. When asked about the matchup he said, "I don't want to go in there just thinking, 'Oh, he's probably the greatest of all time and all that.' I admire what he's done. He probably is the greatest of all time, but there is no point going onto the court if I don't believe that I can (win).”

So, can Popyrin overcome the Australian Open tennis betting odds on the grand stage? We’ll find out.

Novak Djokovic vs Alexei Popyrin Head-to-Head Series

The 24 year old has only faced the world number one once before, five years ago in Tokyo. Back then he was just 19 years old and lost in straight sets but he does believe things will be a lot different now.

When the first matchup came around, Popyrin had only just broken into the top 100 rankings. It was a mismatch from the start, with a young aspiring kid facing a relentless world champion.

This time around he’ll have the full support of his home nation in a sold out arena, as well as the five years of experience he’s gathered since the last time he saw the Serbian across the court.

Novak Djokovic vs Alexei Popyrin Prediction and Picks

Novak Djokovic’s form has been impeccable since the French Open. The only blemish on his resume is the loss against Carlos Alcaraz in the final at Wimbledon.

How did he respond? By winning everything he played in since and claiming another Grand Slam title at the US Open. Barring his slip up in the third round of that tournament against Laslo Djere, Djokovic never dropped a set in any of his other matchups at the US Open and will once again take to the hardcourts of Australia with a title on his mind.

There’s a reason Novak has won this competition ten times. I admire Alexei Popyrins confidence, and the courage to go out there and leave it all on the court, but Novak is in a world of his own right now and should claim this one in straight sets.

So, my Australian Open best bets kick off with a clean sweep for the Serbian in the tournament's second round.

The Pick:  Novak Djokovic to win in straight sets (-275)

That being said, Alexi Popyrin’s serve is electric, and very hard to fight off. He has the nickname ‘The Sniper’ because of that serve, and it was on full display in the opening match of the competition.

Popyrin’s 20 aces were no joke, and while he’ll see a vast uptick in the level of competition he faces in round two, he should still be able to claim a few games against the defending champion.

I’ll back the over on 28.5 games, with Popyrin earning himself some points early before Djokovic can adjust to the serve.

The Pick: Over 28.5 Games (-167)
