Jordan Thompson vs Stefanos Tsitsipas Prediction and PickThe first feature of our Australian Open 2024 tennis piece today features one of last year's tournament finalists.

Stefanos Tsitsipas got off to a bit of a slow start in his first-round matchup at this year's Australian Open, but eventually emerged as the winner over Belgian, Zizou Bergs. The Belgian claimed the opening set 7-5, but Tsitsipas got himself together and won the next three, while only surrendering five games in total across the three sets.

Many eyes are on the Greek top 10 talent this year after making the final of last year's Australian Open against Novak Djokovic. He was ranked third at the time, but didn’t have the best 2023 campaign, landing in Australia this year as the world number seven.

His opponent in round two will be the home nation's Jordan Thompson, who just beat Rafael Nadal at the Brisbane International earlier this month, on his way to a semifinal appearance at the tournament. The crowd will be behind the Aussie and he could present a real challenge for Tsitsipas if he comes out of the gate a little sluggish like he did in round one.

I can see Thompson stealing a set and unsettling the Greek a little, but Tsitsipas should eventually prevail in four.

The Pick:
Stefanos Tsitsipas to win 3-1 (+250)

Grigor Dimitrov vs Thanasi Kokkinakis Odds, Moneyline, Totals and Handicaps – Australian Open Betting Men’s Odds 1/18

(38.5) Over (+110), Under (-154)
Grigor Dimitrov vs Thanasi Kokkinakis Prediction and PickBulgarian Grigor Dimitrov won his first title since 2017 earlier this month, claiming the Brisbane International amidst a fine run of form. He dropped the opening set of the tournament against Andy Murray, but then rallied to claim every set that followed, beating every opponent he faced in straight sets the rest of the way.

Dimitrov once again dropped the opening set but came back to win three sets to one against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary. He’s got the hot hand right now, and the #13 ranked Bulgarian will be looking to build on the success he’s built early on in 2024 in Australia.

His opponent however is another home nation ace, and one of the biggest personalities in the sport. The home crowd loves him, but he’s never gotten past the second round at the Australian Open.

He’s the underdog in this one and would have to pull off a sensational upset to advance to round three. He’s done it before though and has been known to be a giant-killer in the past.

I have Grigor Dimitrov winning this one in straight sets as one of my best bets for the Australian Open this week, but it could certainly be shaky at points during the match.

The Pick:  Grigor Dimitrov to win 3-0 (+110)

Lorenzo Sonego vs Carlos Alcaraz Odds, Moneyline, Totals and Handicaps – Australian Open Betting Men’s Odds 1/18

Match Winner: Sonego +1100, Alcaraz -3300
Total Games:
(29.5) Over (-182), Under (+130)
(30.5) Over (-138), Under (+100)
(31.5) Over (-112), Under (-125)
(32.5) Over (+110), Under (-154)
Lorenzo Sonego vs Carlos Alcaraz Prediction and PickCarlos Alcaraz was on top of the world when he claimed the Wimbledon title in 2023, but the Spanish 20 year old has felt the pressures of being the world's best tennis player in the months that followed.

He lost to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Cincinnati Masters back in August, and since then has suffered multiple early exits by his impeccable standards. Alcaraz hasn’t made another final since then, again losing to Djokovic in the semifinal at the ATP World Tour Finals in November.

While he might not have the same level of confidence he had in the summer of 2023, he still has -3300 Australian Open tennis betting odds for his second-round matchup. His opponent is Italian Lorenzo Sonego, and with the odds so heavily slanted against him, one might wonder why I’ve included it in today's betting.

Quite simply, Sonego is 1-0 against Alcaraz. Granted it was back in 2021, but he beat him in straight sets at the Cincinnati Masters that year, and that could give him supreme confidence against the young Spaniard who appears to be just a half step off his game right now.

I still believe we see the world #2 in Alcaraz advance, but not without a slight hiccup. His Australian Open tennis odds are so heavily slanted his way that there’s great value in backing the Italian he’s facing to claim at least one set.

The Pick:
Lorenzo Sonego to win a set (+140)

Caroline Dolehide vs Coco Gauff Odds, Moneyline, Totals and Handicaps – Australian Open Betting Women’s Odds 1/17

Match Winner: Dolehide +1400, Gauff -10000
Total Games:
(15.5) Over (-334), Under (+220)
(16.5) Over (-167), Under (+120)
(17.5) Over (+100), Under (-138)
(18.5) Over (+140), Under (-200)
Caroline Dolehide vs Coco Gauff Prediction and PickCoco Gauff made light work of her first round matchup against Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, claiming a win in straight sets in just an hour of play. The women's world #4 went into the tournament as one of the favorites to go all the way, and in the first round confirmed those beliefs that she stands a very good chance.

The American talent won the US Open in 2023 but is yet to advance beyond the fourth round of the Australian Open. This year she stands a very good chance of making a run but will now face fellow American Caroline Dolehide.

Dolehide also won her first-round matchup in straight sets but doesn’t have a particularly good record at major tournaments. She has not yet featured in the third round of any major and would have to pull off quite the upset to change that now in 2024. She’s improved emphatically in recent months, especially with the run she made to the final of the Abierto de Guadalajara back in September.

While Dolehide is playing some of her best tennis, running into Coco Gauff in the second round is quite unfortunate. The odds for Gauff to win, even in straight sets, just aren’t worth placing. However, the #4 ranked talent should claim this one in two sets, and I’ll back her doing so in under 17.5 games.

The Pick:
 Under 17.5 Games (-138)
