2023 Coke Zero Sugar 400 Starting lineup

Qualifying will take place before Saturday’s NASCAR race to determine the starting lineup for the Coke Zero Sugar 400.

2023 Coke Zero Sugar 400 Betting Preview and Predictions

Now that 15 drivers are already assured of their playoff spots, there is a small group of three drivers who can still make the postseason without having to win this race. Certain scenarios are required for each of these drivers, who would all lose their bids if another non-playoff driver is the outright winner at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night.

Assuming no other driver outside the playoff picture wins at Daytona, these scenarios would be in play:

  1. Bubba Wallace would clinch the last playoff berth if he gains 24 points.
  2. Ty Gibbs could clinch with help from other drivers that will depend on everyone’s finish.
  3. Daniel Suárez could clinch with help from other drivers that will depend on everyone’s finish.

Only two drivers who have already clinched their playoff spots have a chance to claim the regular-season championship. Either Martin Truex Jr. or Denny Hamlin could become regular-season champion if the following things occur:

  1. Martin Truex Jr. would clinch the championship if he gains 22 points
  2. Denny Hamlin could clinch if Truex fails to gain 22 points and Hamlin gets help from other drivers that will depend on everyone’s finish.

2023 Coke Zero Sugar 400 Best Bets: Top picks

Since becoming a full-time Cup Series driver in 2016, Chase Elliott has never missed the postseason. This year, an injury and suspension caused Elliott to miss multiple races, putting his streak in jeopardy. Now only one regular-season race remains, and NASCAR fans know Elliott will be giving it everything he’s got to secure the win and keep his postseason streak alive. Apart from wins in a few duel races held at Daytona International Speedway, Elliott has yet to win a 500 race this year. Elliott is one of the more experienced and talented drivers on the NASCAR Cup Series roster, so you can’t count him out on Saturday night.

The Pick: Chase Elliott to win (+1400)

A.J. Allmendinger has only raced once at Daytona International Speedway at the Cup Series level in the next-gen cars. That was earlier this season, and a sixth-place finish was the result of Allmendinger’s great performance in the race. Although crashes played a role in getting him that top 10 finish, Allmendinger has shown great speed and driving this season. He needs a win to make the postseason, and I could see it happening. However, a top-10 finish seems more likely for Allmendinger as he fights for his postseason life on Saturday.

The Pick: AJ Allmendinger to finish top 10 (+210)

If Martin Truex Jr. win the regular-season championship, he would start the playoffs with 15 points. That would essentially give him a first-round bye. Fifteen points is the equivalent of winning three playoff races, since each race winner in the postseason gets five points per victory. Recognizing this, and only needing 22 points to clinch the regular-season crown, Truex Jr. knows he just needs to finish in 15th place or better to clinch that championship. Since that’s the case, Truex Jr. will likely be flirting with the top 10 for most of this race to ensure a top-15 finish. The way Joe Gibbs Racing and crew chief James Small have been preparing his car, there’s no reason Truex Jr. shouldn’t get the points he needs. Give me plus money on Truex Jr. closing the regular season out with a top-10 finish.

The Pick: Martin Truex Jr. to finish top 10 (+140)

NASCAR Sleepers Picks for Sunday’s 2023 Coke Zero Sugar 400

Austin Dillon’s postseason hopes rely solely on his winning Saturday night’s race. If Dillon can’t secure a victory at Daytona, he will miss the postseason. Luckily for Dillon, this track has brought him a lot of success. He has won the Daytona 500 twice, including once in the next-gen cars. Knowing he needs a win to make the postseason, look for Dillon -- like every other driver in his situation -- to push his car to the absolute limit on Saturday night. While he’s a long shot, I have to give Dillon a chance.

The Pick: Austin Dillon to win (+3300)
