Novak Djokovic came close to an early 2023 U.S. Open exit after losing the first two sets of his third-round match against fellow Serb Laslo Djere, who was ranked No. 32 in the tournament.

The 23-time Grand Slam event champion battled his way back into the matchup and eventually won the next three sets to reach the Round of 16. Now in position to take over the No. 1 spot in next week’s ATP rankings, Djokovic enters his Sept. 5 quarterfinal match on the heels of a straight-sets win over Croatia’s Borna Gojo.

Meanwhile, American Taylor Fritz has won all four of his 2023 U.S. Open matches to date in straight sets. In the Round of 16, he eliminated Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker, but he has yet to face a highly-ranked opponent at this year’s tournament.

Fritz, ranked No. 9 in the world, has been playing some excellent tennis of late. A quarterfinal match in his native country with the home-crowd advantage offers him perhaps his best chance to beat Djokovic. The 25-year-old from California is staring at a huge opportunity as we now serve up our best bets for this intriguing U.S. Open quarterfinal match.

Novak Djokovic vs Taylor Fritz Preview

Novak Djokovic had to survive a scare in the tournament’s third round, but he showed his poise and experience by routing Borna Gojo in the Round of 16. Up to that point, Gojo was riding a wave of momentum – having not lost a set in any of his first three matches at this year’s U.S. Open in New York.

Djokovic will be facing a top-10 opponent in Taylor Fritz, who has yet to drop a set through four matches at this year’s tournament.

The Serbian tennis great has been playing some of the best tennis of his career in 2023 and is now 24-1 at Grand Slam events this year. His only loss came in the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, a player he might face again in the U.S. Open final if both men continue winning.

Djokovic is now playing in the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the 13th time in his career, and his three U.S. Open titles are part of his record 23 career Grand Slam tournament championships. As he pursues a fourth crown at the prestigious New York tournament, Djokovic will face his next obstacle in Taylor Fritz.

Novak Djokovic vs. Taylor Fritz Head-to-Head

Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz have faced each other seven times so far in their careers. The two met just a few weeks ago in the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 at Cincinnati -- a tournament Djokovic went on to win after beating Fritz in straight sets.

Djokovic is 7-0 lifetime against Fritz, who has only taken a set from the Serbian star once in seven matches. That happened at the 2021 Australian Open, where Djokovic had a 2-0 lead over Fritz before the American battled back to force a decisive fifth set.

Fritz, who stands 6-foot-5, has a strong forehand and is dangerous on both sides of the court. He also possesses quite a weapon in his first serve. Of course, none of that is anything Novak Djokovic hasn’t seen before, but in 2023 Fritz has been playing his career-best tennis. The timing is perfect for him to take on a legend in his home country.

While Fritz’s U.S. Open tennis odds to win this quarterfinal matchup might not look very good on the surface, the chink in Novak’s armor exposed during his five-set win over Djere at least leaves the door open for a potential upset.

Novak Djokovic vs. Taylor Fritz Predictions and Picks

Taylor Fritz can learn from his straight-sets loss to Djokovic last month. He has been playing really well this year and has looked like one of the most assertive players at the 2023 U.S. Open, where he has not dropped a single set.

While it might be a stretch for Fritz to win this match, winning one set from Djokovic is a strong possibility, and there are some good-looking odds for that. The American’s U.S. Open odds to win the first set are +250, and his odds to win any set are +112.

While the more conservative +112 choice makes a lot of sense here, let’s back Fritz to come out hot -- riding the momentum of his first four rounds – and try to steal an early advantage by claiming the first set of this match.

The Pick: Taylor Fritz to win the first set (+250)

Betting against Novak Djokovic in 2023 is a fool's game. I draw the line at one set. The Serbian has worked his way back to his very best level and is crushing Grand Slam wins so far this year.

The outcome of this one will most likely fall his way, and I’m going to back him to pull away in the third and fourth sets. Djokovic has proven his ability to wear down superb tennis players more than a decade younger than he is, and therefore taking him with a -5.5 game handicap is one of my U.S. Open best bets for the quarterfinals.

The Pick: Novak Djokovic 5.5 game handicap (-167)
