Jannik Sinner vs. Sebastian Baez Prediction and Pick

Jannik Sinner won his first two matches at this year’s Australian Open in straight sets -- beating Dutchmen Botic van de Zandschulp and Jesper De Jong.

Sinner has been at the top of his game of late, having played some of his greatest tennis in the second half of the 2023 season. After reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, Sinner went on to win the Canadian Open and China Open. He then won the Vienna Open in October and reached the championship match at the ATP World Tour Finals in November.

The Italian is now ranked No. 4 in the world. He beat Djokovic in the group stage at the ATP World Tour before facing him again in the final. He’s performing at an elite level right now and presents quite a challenge for Sebastian Baez, the world’s 26th-ranked player.

Baez won each of his first two matches in four sets -- dropping a set against both J.J. Wolf and Daniel Galan. He will have no room for error in the third round against Sinner, and his Australian Open tennis betting odds are at +1500 to win the matchup.

Facing Baez in the third round is a step up in competition for Sinner, compared to what he has faced so far. However, Sinner still appears far too powerful for this to be a dangerous match for him.

The Pick: Jannik Sinner to win 3-0 (-300)

Adrian Mannarino vs. Ben Shelton Odds, Moneyline, Totals and Handicaps – Australian Open Men’s Odds 1/18

Adrian Mannarino vs. Ben Shelton Prediction and Pick

Rising American tennis star Ben Shelton, who entered the Australian Open as the 16th-ranked men’s player, is set to face face France’s Adrian Mannarino in the tournament’s third round.

Shelton knocked out host-nation favorite Chris O’Connell in Round 2, smashing 17 aces and dominating on second serve to beat the Australian. Labeled a young maverick of the sport as he has come up in the rankings, Shelton gladly leans into that reputation whenever he is on the court.

He is one of the biggest personalities in the game right now, and a win here against Mannarino would set up a fourth-round matchup with No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The two have a history that would be the focus of this potential rematch, since Djokovic did not appreciate Shelton’s antics at last year’s U.S. Open.

Shelton attempted to torment Djokovic early in their U.S. Open semifinal match. When Djokovic ultimately prevailed, the Serbian star jabbed back by mocking Shelton’s “hang up the phone” celebration gesture after ending the young American’s tournament hopes. Djokovic has been very open about his distaste for Shelton’s on-court behavior, and their potential fourth-round meeting in Australia would make for must-watch tennis.

Standing in the way of that is Mannarino, who has made his way to the third round after two very tightly contested five-set victories. The world’s No. 20 player came from 2-1 down in the opening round to beat Stan Wawrinka, and then dropped two sets in disappointing fashion after taking a 2-0 lead over Jaume Munar in Round 2.

Mannarino won a total of only three games in losing the third and fourth sets to Spain’s Munar, but he pulled out the win in when it counted. He isn’t playing the cleanest tennis right now, and Shelton could take advantage of that. A 3-0 Shelton win is one of my best bets for the Australian Open’s third round.

The Pick: Ben Shelton to win 3-0 (+160)

Cameron Norrie vs. Casper Ruud Odds, Moneyline, Totals and Handicaps – Australian Open Betting Men’s Odds 1/19

Match Winner: Norrie +175, Ruud -225
1st Set Winner: Norrie +130, Ruud -182
2nd Set Winner: Norrie +140, Ruud -200
Total Games:
(36.5) Over (-167), Under (+120)
(37.5) Over (-138), Under (+100)
(38.5) Over (-118), Under (-118)
(39.5) Over (+100), Under (-138)
Cameron Norrie vs. Casper Ruud Prediction and Pick

British star Cam Norrie avoided disaster in Round 2 of the Australian Open after dropping the first two sets against Italy’s Giulio Zeppieri. Norrie lost the second set on a tiebreaker and then had to claw his way back into the match one game at a time just to force a fifth set.

Zeppieri might be ranked outside of the top 100, but the power in his serve and forehand was too much for Norrie in the first two sets. Weather conditions were a factor, too, as strong wind and rain delays took their toll on the match. Nevertheless, Norrie eventually prevailed and will now move on to a tough third-round encounter with Norway's Casper Ruud.

Ruud also faced a difficult battle in the second round against host-nation favorite Max Purcell. That matchup went all the way to a fifth set and had to be decided by an exhausting 10-7 tie breaker. It was a nail-biter, to say the least, as Purcell very nearly managed to upset Ruud, the world’s 11th-ranked player.

Heading into Round 3, Ruud is the favorite, with -225 Australian Open betting odds to beat Norrie. These two have faced each other three previous times, and Ruud won all three of those matchups. I expect to see a similar outcome here in Australia, because Norrie isn’t 100 percent healthy.

Norrie is dealing with both knee and wrist issues that had to be addressed during his second-round match, and the last thing he needed was a five-set slugfest in order to advance. I think Ruud will win this one in four sets.

The Pick: Casper Ruud to win 3-1 (+300)

Lesia Tsurenko vs. Aryna Sabalenka Odds, Moneyline, Totals and Handicaps – Australian Open Betting Men’s Odds 1/18

Match Winner: Tsurenko +900, Sabalenka -2000
1st Set Winner: Tsurenko +550, Sabalenka -1200
2nd Set Winner: Tsurenko +550, Sabalenka -1200
Total Games:
(15.5) Over (-334), Under (+220)
(16.5) Over (-167), Under (+120)
(17.5) Over (-112), Under (-125)
(18.5) Over (+130), Under (-182)
Lesia Tsurenko vs. Aryna Sabalenka Prediction and Pick

Prior to the start of this Australian Open, Aryna Sabalenka was my pick to win the women’s singles title. So far in Melbourne, it appears that the defending champion is on course to make another deep run. Through the tournament’s first two rounds, Sabalenka has lost a total of only six games across four sets.

She won each of her first two matches in straight sets, and in the opening round, Sabalenka allowed German 18-year-old Ella Seidel to win just one game in the entire match. In the third round, she will face Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko, a player who beat her in one of their two previous meetings. Although Sabalenka did once lose to Tsurenko, the two have not faced each another since 2019. In the years since then, Sabalenka has emerged as one of the most dominant players in the women's game with a No. 2 overall ranking

Sabalenka played two hours of tennis through the first two rounds, while Tsurenko battled more than twice as long to get through her initial Australian Open matches. Sabalenka is fresh and dominating, and her Australian Open tennis odds to the entire tournament are -2000. I’ll take her to win this match in straight sets, gaining slightly more appealing odds for the parlay at -500.

The Pick: Aryna Sabalenka to win 2-0 (-500)
