Usually when LeBron James attends Ring Night it is the king who is getting the bling. But tonight is the first night in the history of Denver basketball when fans can celebrate a championship and hang a banner.

They could not do it in their ABA days, which ended in 1976, and they could not do it in the NBA until the Miami Heat went down in five games last June.

Lakers vs. Nuggets Predictions and Picks

Tonight, they get their championship rings, and they get to bask in adulation. But then they have Game No. 1 of 82, and they are beginning the season as the third choice -- not the first -- to win the 2024 NBA championship. Milwaukee (+350) and Boston (+400) have shorter odds than the Nuggets (+450).

No NBA team has successfully defended a title since the Golden State Warriors in the 2017-18 season. In that campaign, the Warriors opened their defense of the championship with what looked like a buzzer-beating bucket by Kevin Durant against Houston. Confetti rained down from the rafters, but the play was reviewed, and the officials ruled that Durant had released the ball a split-second too late.

So began a 58-24 campaign that ended with a four-game sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals in what turned out to be LeBron James’ final game for the Cavs. Coincidentally, James will be in the house in Denver tonight as a visitor. And, yes, he will probably want to spoil the party as it unfolds on national TV with a 7:30 p.m. ET start on TNT.

James has several new teammates on his supporting cast, and there will be a different starting power forward after Jarred Vanderbilt was ruled out with a heel injury. Taurean Prince will replace him, and Rui Hachimura should get extended playing time off the bench. More on that later.

Best Same-Game Parlay Picks for Lakers vs. Nuggets: 5-Leg Parlay Pick (+60,000)

This is the first same-game parlay wagering opportunity, and we will do what we can to guide you toward a winning finish. And remember, whatever happened last year does not matter … to a point. The Lakers will most certainly recall being swept out of the Western Conference Finals, which is one of the reasons why they brought in four new players who will try to crack the rotation: Christian Wood, Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent, and Cam Reddish.

Three players who saw extended minutes in the Lakers’ Game 4 loss to Denver last postseason are no longer with the team: Dennis Schröder, Lonnie Walker, and Tristan Thompson. The known commodities for Los Angeles are James, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, Hachimura, and D’Angelo Russell.

For Denver, the starting five remains the same: Nikola Jokic, Michael Porter Jr., Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Beyond that, the two reserves who saw action in Game 4 – Jeff Green and Bruce Brown – are no longer with the team. Their rotation spots are more or less up for grabs, but it is worth noting that rookie guard Julian Strawther from Gonzaga was 10th in the NBA in total points during the preseason, averaging 17.8 and making 14 3-pointers in four games.

Also, the Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell averaged 13.5 points during the preseason and had a league-high 32 assists. So he is coming in hot.

The trick to a winning same-game parlay is to find the one or two lines that seem mispriced. Anybody can go “yeah” or “nay” on a triple-double for Jokic (he had three of them in the Western Conference Finals last spring) but not everyone is up to speed on what Strawther has been up to. You following us?

What we find on the Betway board is the Lakers at +175 on the money line as 5½-point favorites. If we start out season by betting on LeBron to win (a time-tested formula for success, that is Leg 1: Lakers Moneyline.

Also, the last time he played a game that mattered, James became the oldest player in NBA history to score 40 points, as he finished one assist shy of a triple-double in Game 4. If we go with the “he’s stealing the spotlight” school of thought, which we are, then we make Leg 2 a “yes” on James to record a triple-double, which is +750, along with Leg 3, James to score at least 30 (+300), and Leg 4 being Anthony Davis scoring at least 30 points (+300).

A $10 wager returns $1,510, and if you want to get silly and add “yes” to the proposition of the game going to overtime, the parlay becomes +60000 and pays $6,010 on a $10 wager.

Option 3 is more conservative: Lakers getting 5½ points, James (+100) and Davis (+100) to score at least 25, Prince to score at least 12 (+350), Hachimura to score at least 12, and Russell to go over 5½ assists. That five-leg parlay pays $1,210 and does not require a Lakers victory.

There are no options involving Strawther, including Rookie of the Year futures. But the kid from Gonzaga had a heck of a preseason, and a good side bet with your buddies is whether he will hit his first shot. Enjoy that cold one either way, and good luck.
