When it comes to semi-favorites in the NBA, nobody quite fills that bill like the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors. Yes, they are both championship contenders. No, neither is a favorite.

They are close, but Boston, Milwaukee, and Denver are in a different league when it comes to odds to win the 2023-24 NBA championship. Phoenix is the +600 fourth choice, and Golden State is the +1200 fifth choice.

Suns vs. Warriors Predictions and Picks

Both teams are going to look quite different, and the guy who will look most out of place is former Phoenix point guard Chris Paul, now playing for the Dubs. Since Draymond Green has been dealing with a sprained ankle, Paul is listed as a starter in the Warriors’ game notes. Whether that remains the case for the rest of the season remains to be seen.

Folks who wagered on Paul for the NBA’s Sixth Man Award are especially interested, because a player must come off the bench in at least half of his team’s games to be eligible for that award.

Aside from Paul in a new uniform, the guy everyone else wants to watch making a debut for his new team is Bradley Beal, whom Phoenix brought in from Washington in a trade over the summer that saw the Suns mortgage the next half-decade of draft picks to put together a superstar trio of Kevin Durant, Beal, and Devin Booker.

There is a school of thought that NBA teams need three superstars to win a title, although Denver turned that theory on its head last season.

Golden State could not get past the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of last year’s playoffs, and Phoenix was ousted by the Nuggets after having tied the series at 2-2. Monty Williams lost his job as the Suns’ head coach, and Frank Vogel will be making his debut on the road in San Francisco.

Golden State is favored by 3½ points, which seems about right if you go by the adage that the home court is always worth three points. These teams are both packed with shooters and superstars but have questions about their centers. In the case of the Warriors, it is whether Kevon Looney is a championship-caliber center in a conference with Nikola Jokic and Rudy Gobert. For the Suns, it will be the debut of Jusuf Nurkic, who came over in a multiteam trade that sent former starter DeAndre Ayton to Portland.

In terms of measuring-stick games, this one is akin to dipping your toes in the water for both teams, because they are measuring themselves along with opponents who are expected to be in the league’s final four.

In fact, all four teams playing on TNT tonight – the Nuggets, Lakers, Suns, and Warriors -- are considered final-four teams. The Mavericks, Clippers, Pelicans, Kings, and Timberwolves might make us think differently later this season, but that is not a discussion we should be having on an Opening Night in late October.

Best Same-Game Parlay Picks for Suns vs. Warriors: 4-Leg Parlay Pick (+3500)

Tonight is all about seeing how the new pieces fit together, especially for the Suns. They do not have a natural point guard on their roster, and it remains to be seen whether Durant, Beal, or Booker takes on that role.

As a result, we stay the heck away from over/unders on assists for the Suns until we have a body of work to judge. If we were going to go there, the lead pick is that Booker has the most dimes. But that is not betworthy.

What is?

Well, the 3½ points makes sense for bookmakers to draw equal action on both sides, but the visitors are super-loaded offensively to a degree that Steph Curry and Klay Thompson cannot match, and Jordan Poole and his 20.1 points per game went out the door in the trade with Washington for Paul.

That is a lot of bench production to replace, and where the Warriors find it remains a mystery, although it should be noted that Jonathan Kuminga had a very good preseason in scoring 109 total points -- 21 more than anyone else – while shooting 54.7 percent from the field. At age 21, he is starting to look like the pro the Warriors expected him to become when they selected him with the seventh overall draft pick in 2021. (He is +3500 to be Most Improved Player on the Betway board).

So, what makes sense from a single-game parlay standpoint.

Let’s start with the 3½ points, because even a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the fourth that turns a tie game into a victory by the Warriors does not make for a cover. So, Point Spread Suns +2.5 (-110) is Leg 1.

Then we have Curry and his 3-point shots, which tend to come in bunches, one might say. He had at least four in 10 of his first 11 games last season and scored at least 30 points in nine of those 11 games, so we are clicking on Curry over 30 points (-135) with at least four 3-pointers (-245) as Legs 2 and 3. Leg 4. Paul to have at least 12 assists(+625) is the risky part of this parlay at Leg 4 because it is priced at +625, but he did it a dozen times last season and now has better shooters around him. Leg 5 would be Kuminga if he were available, but he is not. So this is a 4-leg parlay with odds of +3500, which means $10 brings back $370, which will easily get you through a very busy NBA Wednesday after we see what transpires on this NBA Tuesday.
