Hawks vs Magic Predictions and Picks

Normally, the choice of a Hawks-Magic NBA game or a Bears-Panthers NFL game would make even the most avid sports fan scream out: “Movie Night!”

That’s not the case tonight, because the Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic both have winning records, and the second half of tonight’s NBA TV doubleheader means two things: There will be actual human activity in the city or Orlando well past 10 p.m. when that urban center is usually fast asleep, and there will be a higher spot in the standings at stake.

Both teams enter this game with 4-3 records, and the Magic get our vote for being the bigger overachiever because they were not expected to be much more than a team that continues to develop Paolo Banchero over the course of 82 games before the regular season ends with yet another spot in the draft lottery.

However, the East is showing itself to be unpredictable this November, and every NBA fan who had been dreading any game that did not involve the Celtics, Bucks, or Sixers now has a few additional pleasant surprises when it comes to viewing options.

The Hawks are somewhat of a known commodity. They have two terrific backcourt players in Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, but not a whole heck of a lot else. Nevertheless, whenever you have eight players averaging double figures in points, that means you are a heck of a lot deeper than many imagined you would be.

Turning to tonight’s home team, we see that Magic forward Franz Wagner of the reigning world champion German national team leads Orlando in scoring, which certainly cannot be going over all that well in Banchero’s native Italy. As any history buff knows, Germans and Italians have had their differences in the past.

This is a measuring-stick game for the Magic more so than for the Hawks. The fact that Orlando is playing at home is one of the reasons why the point spread is only Atlanta -3½. Orlando is 5-2-0 against the spread, the fourth-best mark in the NBA, but it has gone over only once in seven games. The Hawks are 4-3 on over/unders, and tonight’s O/U of 232 is the highest (by three points) that the Magic have had all season.

Best NBA Same-Game Parlay Picks for Atlanta Hawks vs. Orlando Magic - 3-leg parlay picks (+10000)

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Franz Wagner rebounds 8+ (+575)

If we were basing this pick off what Franz Wagner has done against Eastern Conference opponents this season, we would have absolutely nothing to work with. Orlando has played all seven of its games against Western Conference opponents, and tonight begins a stretch in which the Magic will play 21 of their next 22 against teams from the East. In his four games against Atlanta last season, Wagner scored 19, 24, 22, and 8 points, so he has not exactly killed it against the Hawks. However, he has grabbed eight rebounds in two of his seven games this season and plays major minutes every night. With the over/under set relatively high, we expect a quicker pace than the Magic usually play, which will lead to rebounding opportunities. This is a nice price.

The Pick: Frank Wagner to grab at least eight rebounds (+575)

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Dejounte Murray assists 8+ (+380).

Two seasons ago, Dejounte Murray was a nightly triple-double threat for the San Antonio Spurs, which is one of the primary reasons why the Hawks went after him in free agency. The triple-doubles have not come along with him, but he is a steady producer of assists -- never having fewer than five in any game this season. Once again, we are taking a leap of faith here with a relatively high number because of the price. Also, it is not like Murray has never had eight assists. He did it in on Nov. 1 against Washington, and he did it 24 times last season.

The Pick: Dejounte Murray to dish at least eight assists (+380)

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Trae Young rebounds 5+

Trae Young ranks second in the NBA in assists and has shown himself to be a prolific scorer during his brief career. He is also surrounded by very capable rebounders. When an over/under for rebounding is set high, the oddsmakers believe there will be more than the usual amount of 3-pointers, and those lead to long rebounds that guards often grab. Young has had five rebounds once this season and 15 times last season, so it is not exactly unprecedented … nor is it likely. However, when building a parlay that pays, a leap of faith has to come into play somewhere. That somewhere is here.

The Pick: Trae Young to grab at least five rebounds (+380)

We will not get many Hawks-Magic national TV games, and the NFL competition with Bears-Panthers is about as awful a matchup as Roger Goodell could ever offer. So, there will be viewers, and teams that are not often on national television tend to play a notch or two better when they know there are folks all across America watching. We therefore expect just a little something extra from these three premier players. These three props put together in a Betway Same-Game Parlay produce odds of +10000, so a $10 wager would pay $1,010. Good luck!
