UFC 293 Fight Card Saturday Night: Predictions, Odds and Best Bets

The UFC is back on ESPN this weekend with what should be a very good fight card. UFC 293, set for Saturday night at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia, will feature Israel Adesanya defending his middleweight title against Sean Strickland in the main event and Australia’s own Tai Tuivasa taking on Alexander Volkov in the co-main.

UFC 293’s main card includes two heavyweight fights and one light heavyweight fight, so fans can expect to see a lot of power on display Down Under this weekend.

Adesanya vs. Strickland Prediction and Picks

Sean Strickland has battled back from two UFC losses in the second half of 2022 to win each of his last two fights, earning him a shot at Israel Adesanya’s middleweight title belt.

Strickland beat Nassourdine Imavov by unanimous decision back in January. He then returned in July to beat Abus Magomedov, who had entered the UFC with an impressive professional MMA record and scored a quick knockout in his first fight with the organization.

Adesanya apparently pushed for Strickland to get this fight, despite concerns about his opponent's bullish nature. Adesanya claimed that the UFC didn’t want Strickland “embarrassing the organization” while taking part in a main event. That certainly seemed plausible, given Strickland’s outspoken nature and eagerness to be interviewed. In any case, this fight promises to showcase Adesanya’s kickboxing against Strickland’s boxing.

Strickland enters Saturday’s fight as a serious underdog, and he will have his work cut out for him against Adesanya, whose only middleweight loss came against Alex Pereira at UFC 281.

Other than that defeat, the fighter known as “The Last Stylebender” has been flawless in the UFC middleweight division. The only other loss on his resume happened because he stepped up to the light heavyweight bracket to challenge for a second belt. At his more natural weight, Izzy is one of the very best in the game right now. He’ll be fighting close to home on Saturday, since the Nigeria native grew up in New Zealand from the age of 10 onward. Adesanya should draw a very strong and supportive crowd for this main event.

Strickland is a dangerous fighter, but this matchup feels like a comfortable Adesanya win. He’s faster, more agile and has more diversity to his fighting style. I’ll start my UFC picks off with Izzy Adesanya successfully defending his title via KO/TKO. Strickland will need to be flawless in his defense if he wants to stand a chance here, but Adesanya should be able to break down that defense (or lack thereof) and get the win.

The Pick: Israel Adesanya to win by KO/TKO (+100)

Tuivasa vs. Volkov – Heavyweight Bout Main Event Fight Info:

UFC Fight Schedule 2023

Tuivasa vs. Volkov Odds, Moneyline, Over/Under – UFC Fight Odds 9/9

Moneyline: Tuivasa +200, Volkov -245
Total Rounds:
-1.5 (1.5): Over 1.5 -105, Under 1.5 -125
-2.5 (2.5): Over 2.5 +200, Under 2.5 -275
Method of Victory:
Tai Tuivasa KO, TKO or Disqualification +275
Tai Tuivasa Decision or Technical Decision +900
Tai Tuivasa By Submission +2200
Alexander Volkov KO, TKO or Disqualification -110
Alexander Volkov Decision or Technical Decision +350
Alexander Volkov By Submission +1400
Draw or Technical Draw +8000

Tuivasa vs. Volkov Prediction and Picks

Next up is the UFC heavyweight division bout between the host nation’s star and a Russian in top form. Tai Tuivasa is one of Australia’s darlings in the UFC with firm roots in his culture and a strong following at home. He is certain to be a crowd favorite.

This fight night in Sydney marks the first time since 2017 that the organization has staged an event in Australia. The location was part of a three-event trilogy agreement reached earlier this year. UFC 293 is the first of those three events, and it was a no-brainer to have local hero Tuivasa on the card.

It would be unfair to simply label the Aussie heavyweight as a striker. He’s a brawler. He wants to go out there and knock somebody out, and he swings to do so in every one of his encounters.

The biggest problem Tuivasa might face in this fight is the 6-foot-7 frame of Alex Volkov, who possesses a significant advantage with his reach.

Volkov enters this fight having claimed back-to-back first-round knockout wins over Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Alexandr Romanov. While Volkov has been winning, Tuivasa has suffered back-to-back losses, albeit against some of the division's better opposition.

The question here is this: Can Tuivasa overcome the UFC card odds while fighting at home in Australia or is Alex Volkov’s streak going to continue with a third straight win? I almost hate to admit it – because a home win for Tai in front of Australian fans would be a great spectacle -- but I have to go with the Russian here. Sorry, Australia.

The Pick: Alexander Volkov to win by KO/TKO (-110)

Kape vs. dos Santos – Flyweight Bout Main Event Fight Info:

UFC Fight Schedule 2023
Manel Kape (18-6-0) vs Felipe dos Santos (7-0)
Date: Saturday, Sept. 9
Time: Main Card, 10 p.m. ET
Venue: Qudos Bank Arena — Sydney, Australia
TV Channel: ESPN+
Live Stream: UFC Fight Pass

Kape vs. dos Santos Odds, Moneyline, Over/Under – UFC Fight Odds 9/9

Moneyline: Kape -395, dos Santos +310
Total Rounds:
-1.5 (1.5): Over 1.5 -163, Under 1.5 +120
-2.5 (2.5): Over 2.5 +120, Under 2.5 -163
Method of Victory:
Manel Kape KO, TKO or Disqualification -150
Manel Kape Decision or Technical Decision +350
Manel Kape By Submission +700
Felipe dos Santos KO, TKO or Disqualification +1400
Felipe dos Santos Decision or Technical Decision +600
Felipe dos Santos By Submission +1200
Draw or Technical Draw +6600

Kape vs. dos Santos Prediction and PicksManel Kape lost his first two UFC fights, but he has since turned his fortunes around with three straight wins -- the last of which came at UFC Fight Night on Dec. 17, 2022.

Kape will face Felipe dos Santos, who is making his UFC debut following a 7-0 start to his MMA career. The Brazilian steps in as a late replacement to fight Kape, following multiple cancellations of other fights, and this one might be a little too much too soon for the debutant.

The newcomer dos Santos has seven wins under his belt with five finishes, including two knockouts and three submissions, but he was competing in the Legacy Fighting Alliance. His move to the UFC is a significant jump in terms of the competition, and this relatively unknown talent faces underdog odds in his first fight under contract.

Manel Kape is 18-6 in his MMA career and boasts two KO/TKOs in his last three UFC fights. One of those resulted from a vicious flying knee, which he set up beautifully last year against Ode Osbourne. Kape’s explosive power and damage could rear its head again at UFC 293, so for the last of my predictions for the upcoming weekend, I’ll take Kape to win this one with a KO.

The Pick: Manel Kape to win by KO/TKO (-150)
