The main event at UFC 291 will be an eagerly anticipated lightweight bout between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Both highly ranked fighters will be vying for a potential title shot against the current champ, Islam Makhachev. A victory on Saturday night would undoubtedly strengthen each fighter’s case for a shot at Makhachev.

The July 29 UFC fight card showcases a lineup of highly experienced MMA fighters and big names, including a bout between light heavyweight Jan Blachowicz and Alex Pereira, as well as welterweight matchups in Stephen Thompson vs. Michel Pereira and Michael Chiesa vs. Kevin Holland.

Dustin Poirier vs Justin Gaethje Prediction and Pick

Without a doubt, this fight promises to be an all-out brawl. It features two of the toughest fighters returning to the octagon for a highly anticipated rematch of the intense and thrilling showdown that was their previous encounter.
Five years ago, when they met for the first time, it was Dustin Poirier on the front foot -- throwing combinations at Gaethje as he stood in close proximity and took damage.

Gaethje focused in on Poirier’s lead leg and did a fair amount of damage of his own, with Poirier refusing to switch stances despite moving gingerly on that front foot.

Both men rocked each other as the second and third rounds began, but it was Poirier who emerged the winner in the fourth when he wobbled Gaethje with a powerful left-hand counterpunch.

In this rematch, both fighters return with increased experience and higher stakes. They are now ranked Nos. 3 (Poirier) and 4 (Gaethje), higher numbers than in their previous encounter when Poirier was ranked fifth and Gaethje sixth.

Both men are 6-2 since they last met, and both have been in (and lost) title fights against Khabib and Charles Oliveira during that same period.

It will be intriguing to see whether Poirier chooses to engage in striking exchanges with Gaethje again or if he leans towards showcasing his ground game as a more complete fighter this time around.

Personally, I like the fight to end in the same way it did the first time. I’m going for Poirier by KO/TKO in my UFC picks for July 29, anticipating another exhilarating showdown between these two warriors.

The Pick: Dustin Poirier to win by KO/TKO (+175)

While I think Poirier will win it, there’s no doubt that both fighters can withstand a serious amount of damage and battle into the later stages of their bouts. Taking that into consideration, I see this one going at least four rounds -- just as it did before.

The Pick: Over 3.5 Rounds (+125)

Jan Blachowicz vs Alex Pereira Prediction and Pick

There’s a lot at stake in this light heavyweight bout between the Polish veteran Jan Blachowicz and the imposing Brazilian Alex Pereira, who has stepped up a weight class since his last appearance.

Pereira is coming into this one after losing to Israel Adesanya in the second round and giving up the title belt in the process. As he steps up into the light heavyweight class, I expect him to be more at home, and he might pack more power into his striking at a more natural weight.

Blachowicz’s last fight was a title shot against Magomed Ankalaev -- one in which the Polish fighter looked good out of the gate. His momentum fell off as the fight went on, and eventually, it came down to struggles in the grapple game that cost him a win by decision.

Jan now returns intent on regaining his status as one of the top light heavyweights in the UFC, and a win over Pereira would put him in the conversation for a shot at the now-vacant belt.

Pereira is stepping into a more powerful group of fighters at light heavyweight, but this should be a far more comfortable situation for him and his skill set. He’s a dangerous man with damaging power. He has multiple finishes in the UFC from flying knees to a dangerous left hand, as was seen against Sean Strickland.

It’s a slight risk to bet on Pereira, since we haven’t yet seen him compete in the light heavyweight division, but the UFC card odds are in his favor, and I like his power to show up on Saturday night.

The Pick: Alex Pereira to win by KO/TKO (+165)

Stephen Thompson vs Michel Pereira Prediction and Pick

Steven “Wonderboy” Thompson is back in action this weekend and looking to build on the momentum he gained from a victory over Kevin Holland last December.

That victory proved significant for Thompson, especially considering he is now 40 years old and was on the decline after consecutive losses to Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad.

The Thompson-Holland fight was superb -- one of the best of the year in terms of entertainment value. “Wonderboy” dealt a lot of damage, and Holland’s corner threw in the towel at the end of the fourth round. Thompson showcased exceptional striking skills and continues to possess the speed required to compete at the highest level. Presently, he holds an impressive No. 7 ranking in the welterweight division.

His opponent this weekend is Brazilian veteran Michel Pereira, who got off to a slow start in the UFC  when he lost two of his first three fights. Since then, he has found his rhythm and is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, made up of a submission victory followed by four consecutive decisions.

I can imagine this being another very entertaining battle of striking, and both men will be willing to go through it to prove themselves in their division. This time around, I think Pereira will pull out a victory in what could be a very close call for the judges and a potential split decision.

The Pick: Michel Pereira to win by decision or technical decision (+275)
