Favorites to Win the 2024 Australian Open Men’s ChampionshipThe Australian Open’s defending men’s singles champion, Novak Djokovic, is the favorite to win this prestigious tournament yet again in 2024, and that won’t come as much of a surprise to tennis fans.

Djokovic won three out of the four Grand Slam events in 2023, and only lost the fourth in a tough, five-set battle with Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.

Djokovic returned to his perch as the world’s No. 1-ranked player by claiming the U.S. Open, and he has since won both the ATP Masters 1000 Paris and the Nitto ATP Final -- beating talented Italian Jannik Sinner in the latter tournament’s final.

In late November, Djokovic had lost to Sinner in the Davis Cup finals as well as in a round-robin match at the ATP Finals. While Djokovic might be the favorite in Australia, Sinner is one of the few players capable of beating him.

Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner round out the top three in the odds to win the 2024 Australian Open championship. Alcaraz is currently at +300, while the 22-year-old Sinner is +600 as he comes into the tournament with a lot of confidence.

Previous Australian Open Men’s Singles Champions

Novak Djokovic has won four of the past five Australian Open men’s singles tournaments, while Rafael Nadal claimed the 2022 competition with his remarkable victory over Daniil Medvedev in the final.

One must go back to 2014 to find an Australian champion not named Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, or Roger Federer. In that tournament a decade ago, Swiss talent Stan Wawrinka defeated Nadal in the final, winning the match three sets to one.

Will we have a new champion at the Australian Open in 2024? It’s certainly possible with several potential winners boasting impressive odds.

Medvedev has made two finals in the last three years of this prestigious competition, losing to both Djokovic and Nadal. This year, the world’s No. 3-ranked player has Australian Open betting odds of +800, making him one of the top four favorites to claim the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup that goes to the tournament champion.
Australian Open Men’s Champions Predictions and Best Bets

Betting against Novak Djokovic in any tennis major right now is considered a bold play. The Serbian icon made the final at all four Grand Slam events last year and has won the Australian Open four times in five seasons.

The only time he didn’t win was because he wasn’t playing. Djokovic was deported on the day before the 2022 Australian Open because of his COVID-19 vaccination status. That forced him to surrender his title without the ability to defend it.

Then, in true Djokovic fashion, he returned to the tournament in 2023 and immediately reclaimed it as his own. Djokovic doesn’t need any extra motivation to win Grand Slams, but it does feel like the Australian Open holds a little more weight for him after what happened in 2022. Indeed, his 2023 victory was dubbed ‘the ultimate revenge’, and he won’t be giving up his title without a fight.

With three Grand Slam event championships in 2023 added to his resume, I’ll back Djokovic to get off to a fiery start in 2024.

The Pick: Novak Djokovic to win (+100)

While Carlos Alcaraz has the second-best championship odds behind Novak Djokovic, this could be the tournament that sees Jannik Sinner reach his first Grand Slam final.

Sinner has been playing some elite-level tennis at recent competitions, including his two wins over Djokovic. He’s one of the hardest hitters on the tour and wore down Djokovic on two separate occasions in late 2023.

The Italian youngster has a lot of promise, having reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2023. So far, that’s his best placement at a Grand Slam tournament, but Sinner has been working closely with respected coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill, and he is playing some of his best tennis right now.

As far as Australian Open predictions go beyond the realm of Novak Djokovic, I’d like to see Sinner make his first Grand Slam final, and this first opportunity of 2024 seems like the perfect time for him to do it. The world No. 4-ranked player appears mature and talented enough to go all the way this time, so he’s my secondary pick to win the title.

The Pick: Jannik Sinner to win (+550)

2024 Men’s Australian Open Sleeper Picks

There are several potential Australian Open dark horses, but the one that's impressed me the most in recent appearances is Alex de Minaur, who will, of course, have a home-court advantage at this first Grand Slam event of 2024.

The 24-year-old Australian reached the fourth round of the Australian Open in his previous two appearances in 2022 and 2023. However, he will now enter the 2024 tournament as a top-10 seed -- the highest seed he’s had so far in his young career.

Quality performances at the United Cup, including a win over Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, helped de Minaur climb into the top 10. That win made it three in a row against top-10 opposition, and one of those three came against Novak Djokovic in the United Cup quarterfinals.

De Minaur’s win over the No. 1-ranked Serbian ended Djokovic’s 43-game winning streak on Australian soil. That’s quite impressive, and with the improvements he’s made to his forehand, de MInaur now appears to be a more complete player.

De Minaur’s Australian Open tennis odds stand at +5000, and that feels like great value for the top-10 ranked host-nation hero.

The Pick:  Alex De Minaur +3300
