Both England and USA fans have been looking forward to this fixture ever since the draw for the World Cup group stage was made. The game is set to take place at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar on Friday, November 25 at 2:00p.m. ET.

USA vs England Preview

This is not the first time the USA and England have played one another in a World Cup soccer match. The USMNT famously beat England in the 1950 World Cup, in what has been described as one of the tournament’s biggest shocks. It was probably less of a shock than Saudi Arabia beating Argentina in this year’s competition, though. There was also the Rob Green mistake for England that gifted the USA a 1-1 draw in the group stages of the 2010 competition.

Despite a poor World Cup record against the USA, England do head into this game as massive favorites (-175 to win outright). The Three Lions got off to a superb start in Group B with a 6-2 thrashing over Iran on Matchday 1, elevating them to the top of the group. That was just the second time England have scored six goals in a single fixture in their World Cup history.

Much was discussed about Gareth Southgate’s team selection pre-game, but the critics were proved wrong as England were extremely strong throughout the match, making a team that had lost only twice in their previous 22 internationals look incredibly ordinary. It would have been dubbed a ‘complete’ performance if it wasn’t for the sloppy play at the back which allowed Iran to score twice. This is a part of their game they will look to improve upon going into the game against the USMNT.

The USA, meanwhile, battled it out in a tightly contested draw with Wales in their World Cup opener. The USMNT will be happy with a draw to start proceedings, as it keeps alive their chances of progressing to the round of 16, but it hasn’t come without regret. They will feel like this game was one that got away as Gareth Bale equalized from the spot with eight minutes left to play.

For 45 minutes, USA looked extremely dominant. They we’re excellent value for their lead as Timothy Weah scored his first World Cup goal thanks to a wonderful assist from Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic. This would be their only shot on target in the 90 minutes though, as their young side failed to build upon a fantastic first half of soccer. USMNT will be hoping for a much-improved display across the full 90 minutes as they look to avoid defeat and take points from high-flying England.

USA vs England Predictions

Gareth Southgate will not want to tinker with his starting line-up too much after Monday’s outing vs Iran. Tactical consistency will also be key to progression out of Group B. He will, however, need to manage potential niggling injuries/sickness situations affecting his squad. This includes center-back Harry Maguire, who had to come off against Iran. This could be a real problem for England in defense as they look to register their first clean sheet of the competition. Excellent defensive play was the basis of the Three Lions' success at Euro 2020 as they reached the final, but that does not appear to be the case anymore, with England keeping just two clean sheets in their last nine games in 2022.

Whilst there appears to be little chance of an upset in this game, USMNT will look to take full advantage of England’s frailties at the back. A lot is riding on whether Harry Maguire passes fit for the game as England look a much more assured team with him in the lineup. If Maguire doesn’t start, Eric Dier will most likely get the call up. Dier will not be able to cope with the raw, youthful attack that the USA possess in Christian Pulisic and Timothy Weah. It would not be a surprise to see these two link up again to score USMNT's second goal of the tournament.

With all things considered, expect to see England triumph and prove too much for the USA over the 90 minutes. One thing is for certain, expect to see lots of goals. England fans will look to have one eye firmly on the round of 16 come the final whistle.

Harry Kane got two assists last time out against Iran but failed to get on the scoresheet. There are some concerns about his ankle as he is set to have a scan Wednesday ahead of Friday’s World Cup match, but it is still highly likely he will play.

If passed fit, the 29-year-old will look to surpass Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top goal scorer during the World Cup. Whether it's from the penalty spot or from open play, Kane will get some chances to add to his World Cup tally against the USA. For a man with 12 goals in the Premier League this year, my money would be on him to find the back of the net.
