The Hudson River Derby is back with a bonus match this year. New York’s two teams meet in the knockout stages of the Leagues Cup, marking the 26th installment of this rivalry since it began in 2015.

To date, the Red Bulls have a slight edge in the Hudson River Derby, having won 14 of the previous 25 matchups. NYCFC has won eight games, and three have ended in ties. In non-MLS matches, the Red Bulls have come out on top every time, winning three of three. So, this Leagues Cup matchup offers NYCFC a golden opportunity to get one back.

New York’s teams have met just once so far in 2023, back on May 13. The Red Bulls won that game 1-0 with midfielder Omir Fernandez scoring the only goal.

The New York Red Bulls will have the home-field advantage in this one when NYCFC visits Red Bull Arena in an all-New York Leagues Cup battle.

This is an interesting matchup because the Red Bulls finished first in their group despite only scoring two goals and winning just one game. NYCFC on the other hand finished second in its group with one win and one loss. In the victory, the New Yorkers routed Toronto FC 5-0.

So, while the Red Bulls are the slight favorites, NYCFC will put them to the test.

This season’s Red Bulls have been one of the best defensive teams in MLS. They have struggled at the other end of the field, however, scoring just 22 goals for one of the lowest totals in the Eastern Conference. Despite their scoring struggles, there’s no denying that they have built a wall in their own end by conceding just 26 opposing goals. Only two teams in the East have allowed fewer goals than the Red Bulls, and those two teams rank among the conference’s top four.

This could be a low-scoring affair, just as it is expected to be. While there is a budding rivalry between these two teams, there have not been a lot of goals scored by either one this year. Both lack a reliable finisher upfront. The Red Bulls have only two players with more than two goals this season, and the team leading goal-scorer is attacking midfielder Frankie Amaya.

Winger Gabriel Pereira leads NYCFC with six goals and four assists this season, but he has not played since mid-July and was out against Toronto with a lower body injury.

Santiago Rodriguez looked dangerous from the midfield against Toronto, picking up two goals and an assist. He could be the difference in a game that’s going to be very tough to open up on Thursday night.

New York Red Bulls vs New York City FC Predictions and Pick

Match Result

While NYCFC scored five times in the group stage, it was entirely against Toronto, which has been leaking goals all season and has consistently been one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Bulls defense has been the team’s identity this year, but they have started to let in more goals over the last couple of months as compared to what they were doing earlier this season.

The Red Bulls have allowed at least one goal in six of their last seven MLS games. In five of those games, they allowed at least two.

On the flipside, the Red Bulls are missing some attacking depth, with wingers Serge Ngoma and Lewis Morgan both sidelined. Morgan hasn’t played since early in the season and remains out while working his way back from a hip injury.

I think NYCFC might just pull out a victory. Therefore, I’m going against the favorites here and backing the slight underdog for the win.

The Pick: New York City to Win (+220)

Total Goals

While I believe NYCFC has the potential to score an upset in this match, it's unlikely to be a goal-fest.

The Red Bulls are one of just four MLS teams averaging under one goal per game this season, and they’re thin on goal-scoring talent right now, too. Looking at the roster, it's tough to see where the goals might come from.

Meanwhile, NYCFC barely averages over one goal per game at 1.04, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see this one end in a 1-0 final.

Regardless of the outcome, I’m going for one goal or less.

The Pick: Total Goals Under 1.5 (+187)
