Inter Miami returns to action in the Leagues Cup tonight, fresh off our Betway Insider +500-parlay win in the team’s recent quarterfinal matchup against Charlotte FC.

In the quarterfinals, we picked a Robert Taylor goal, a -1 handicap for Inter Miami, and over 3.5 goals in the match. It all came through when Lionel Messi scored the fourth and final goal late in the game to conclude a comfortable outing Inter Miami.

Charlotte FC had been leaking goals all season, and Messi and Co. took advantage of that. They capitalized early on a converted penalty from Josef Martinez, followed by three more goals. Inter Miami controlled the game throughout, managing 62 percent possession for the match and completing 90 percent of their passes in yet another high-scoring night for the team in pink.

This time around, Inter Milan will face Philadelphia Union, which has been one of this season’s better MLS teams. Currently third in the Eastern Conference, Philly is much more confident defensively and has also scored 39 goals so far this season – an indication of the Union’s attacking ability.

While the Philadelphia Union have been a strong team in MLS play, their performances in the Leagues Cup haven’t been so remarkable. Philadelphia needed a penalty shootout against the New York Red Bulls to survive the Round of 16 and a goal 10 minutes into injury time to claim victory in the final moments of a quarterfinal match against Queretaro.

Just three minutes before the Union scored the winner, Queretaro had a player sent off, and the teams were moments away from a penalty shootout. However, Chris Donovan converted a low cross from the left-hand side to give Philadelphia a 2-1 win.

Inter Miami was the clear favorite in its game against Charlotte FC, as Messi and his teammates were expected to take advantage of their opponent’s defensive woes. That’s exactly what happened, but the upcoming game against Philadelphia is likely to be a much tighter affair.

Philadelphia deployed a 3-5-2 formation with wing backs against Queretaro -- a formation Union has used regularly over the course of the season. The 3-5-2 allows wing back Olivier Mbaizo to play a little farther forward and contribute to the possession in the final third, while Jack McGlynn occupies the same position on the opposite side.

This Union formation might make things a little difficult for Inter Miami in terms of possession in the middle of the field, but Lionel Messi has shown a knack for dropping balls over the fullback for Robert Taylor to pursue. That tactic has proven dangerous for Inter Miami in the tournament so far, and it could be a great option if the Philadelphia wing backs get caught too far forward.

The Union like to play out from the back, and their build-up play flows through midfielders Jose Martinez and Kai Wagner. Daniel Gazdag has proven to be one of the team’s most talented players this season -- scoring 22 goals and adding 10 assists -- but he missed the Queretaro game with a first-grade ankle sprain.

After sitting out against Queretaro, the Hungarian midfielder was cleared for full practice participation one day before the semifinal match against Inter Miami. That likely means he’ll be back in the lineup for this game, and he could be very dangerous against an Inter Miami defense that’s still finding its feet.

Jordi Alba’s presence has certainly helped to organize Inter’s back line, but Miami is still capable of allowing several clear-cut chances, as we saw in the Dallas game.

Overall, this will be a very competitive matchup with a lot of talent on display from both teams in what should be a thrilling Leagues Cup semifinal. Inter Miami will be on the road at Subaru Park, playing in front of a packed house that hopes to spoil the Cinderella run this team has enjoyed in its first tournament since adding Messi.

Philadelphia Union vs Inter Miami Predictions and Pick

Both Teams to Score

Both Philadelphia and Inter Miami have the talent to cut through the defenses they will face in this game. Inter Miami has been creating far better chances since Lionel Messi arrived, as was expected, and his presence has created a wealth of space for teammates Robert Taylor and Josef Martinez.

Martinez, particularly, needs to step up his game after having been fed multiple attempts on goal that he was unable to capitalize on from open play. His two goals in the tournament have been spot kicks, but if he can start to find the back of the net with one of those balls he receives from Messi, he could be a far more dangerous asset than he has been so far.

Of course, Messi himself is capable of a magical moment, and I think it’s clear that teams have quickly learned to avoid fouling the Argentinian in dangerous territory on the edge of the box.

As for Philadelphia, the return of Daniel Gazdag will give the Union a real boost in the final third. He’s the most threatening and creative player on this team and will be a headache for Inter Miami’s backline throughout the game.

The Union are a good passing team and could disrupt Inter Miami, which got used to controlling possession against Charlotte FC.

I’m expecting to see goals from both teams in this one.

The Pick: Both Teams to Score - Yes (-225)

Anytime Goalscorer

Philadelphia’s Julian Carranza knows Inter Miami well, having played for the team from 2019 to 2022. While on loan to the Union in 2022, the 23-year-old striker scored seven goals in 16 appearances. He made the move permanent in July of last year.

Carranza can be effective in front of goal and plays very well between the center backs. He makes well-timed runs to receive through balls and often puts himself in the best position inside the penalty area to lose defenders and pick up goals from close range.

The Union love to feed Carranza, and with potential weakness at the back for Inter Miami, I could really see him grabbing a goal in this one.

The Pick: Julian Carranza to score anytime (+162)

Anytime Goalscorer

It almost looked as if Lionel Messi wasn’t going to score against Charlotte FC, but he made sure it happened with a trademark goal -- losing himself in the penalty area to tap home a low cross.

Messi has now scored eight goals in five appearances in the Leagues Cup, and his goals have come from all sorts of opportunities. His two free kicks speak for themselves, and that capacity for creating a moment of magic on a dead ball makes him a scoring threat in any game. However, it’s really his undeniable ability to read the play faster than anyone else that makes him so dangerous.

Leo always seems to be one step ahead. He knows exactly where the space is and where it's going to be, and I’m backing him to make it six straight games with a goal for Inter Miami.

The Pick: Lionel Messi to score anytime (-134)
