The Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers meet for the first time this season on Tuesday night, and who would have thought these teams would have such similar records at this point in the 2023-24 season? In quite a reversal of past roles, the Flyers are currently second in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division, while the Lightning are clinging to the Eastern Conference’s final wild-card playoff berth.

Since the hometown Philadelphia Eagles were recently eliminated from NFL playoff contention and baseball’s Philadelphia Phillies are in their off-season, the Flyers (along with the Philadelphia 76ers) command all of their city’s pro-sports attention these days. Expect the Wells Fargo Center to be rocking for this marquee matchup with local fans still riled up over 76ers star Joel Embiid’s franchise-record 70-point performance on Monday night.

Lightning at Flyers Preview

The Philadelphia Flyers enter Tuesday’s home game against the Tampa Bay Lightning as the favorite, which is something no one could have predicted at the start of the 2023-24 NHL season. Both teams have had been rather consistent so far, which should make for an entertaining matchup at Wells Fargo Center. The Lightning have won each of their last two games against the Flyers – beating Philadelphia by three goals both times. Those games, however, were played last season, so the chance to turn the tide this year will certainly provide the Flyers with extra motivation to win this game.

Lightning vs. Flyers Predictions and NHL Picks

The Tampa Bay Lightning come into this game as a slight underdog, but I’m not so sure why that is the case. The Philadelphia Flyers have certainly been very impressive this season -- rising into second place in the Metropolitan Division. However, it is still questionable as to whether Philly will finish the regular season with the same winning percentage it has managed over the first 47 games.

Yes, the Flyers have certainly turned the corner and are a much-improved team this season, but they still give me cause for concern. Their offense is very inconsistent, and that inconsistency has led to several losses this season. Another potential issue is their goaltending. The Flyers have two talented young goaltenders in Carter Hart and Samuel Ersson, but they have both also been inconsistent. Hart and Ersson will each lock down the net in one game only to look like revolving doors in their next starts.

The one real consistency for Philadelphia has been the Flyers’ defensive play -- the glue that has held them together so well this season. The Flyers have allowed the NHL’s eighth-fewest goals and fifth-fewest shots to opposing skaters this season, and consistently stellar play in their own zone has been a huge factor in many of their wins.  The great NFL linebacker Ray Lewis was famous for saying that “defense wins championships,” and while I do agree with him, I suspect this is a game in which offense will prevail.

The Lightning are expected to start ace goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy in net on Tuesday night, and their high-scoring offense will present a tough matchup for the Flyers. I can see Tampa Bay going up two goals midway through the second period, which would make a comeback very tough for an inconsistent Flyers offense.

The Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning ML (-105)

The over/under total for this game is an interesting one, because the Lightning have a stellar offense but a very inconsistent defense, and the Flyers have an inconsistent offense but stellar defense. While those factors could literally make this game go either way, I like the under here. The current total is set at 6.5 goals, and I suspect that is too high for these teams to achieve on Tuesday. Philadelphia’s inconsistency on offense is going to be a problem for the Flyers in this matchup, because Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy is no slouch. As far as the Lightning are concerned, I think their offense will win this game for them, but they’ll be tested by the Flyers’ defense. That’s why I lean toward the under on the total here. If the number were set at 5.5, I’d consider the over but would likely favor the under at that number as well.

The Pick: Under 6.5 (-125)

Best NHL Player-Prop Bets for Lightning vs. Flyers:

Cam Atkinson

Flyers right wing Cam Atkinson has been one of Philadelphia’s key players this season, ranking fifth on the team in points, fourth in goals, sixth in assists, and third in shots on goal. After scoring a goal in two of his last three games Atkinson has a very hot stick heading into this home matchup with Tampa Bay. Look for him to test the Lightning defense and perhaps even find the back of the net. On the other hand, Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy always makes scoring a challenge for opponents, so I’ll be looking at Atkinson’s shots on goal for Tuesday night. The Lightning are allowing the NHL’s 20th-most shots on goal per game (30.1) to opposing skaters this season, so look for Atkinson to put at least three pucks on net.

The Pick: Cam Atkinson over 2.5 shots on goal (-143)

Best Same-Game Parlay NHL bets today for Lightning vs. Flyers: 3-Leg Parlay Pick (+950)

Money Line We’re going to start our NHL same-game parlay off the way we usually do by predicting the winning team. I really like Tampa Bay in this matchup. Tampa’s depth of talent at the forward position is much greater than Philadelphia’s, which really gives the Lightning an advantage. The Flyers certainly hold the advantage defensively, but the Lightning counter it well by having goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy in their net.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning ML (-115)

Nikita Kucherov Tampa Bay winger Nikita Kucherov has been his team’s top goal-scorer this season with 28 goals in 46 games. He hasn’t scored since the start of January, so Kucherov is certainly due for a goal any game now. What better way to get it in than on the road against one of the Eastern Conference’s top teams? Philadelphia’s defense is stout, so the Lightning will need a strong performance from a scorer like Kucherov to come out on top in this one.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Nikita Kucherov anytime goalscorer (+110)

Total Goals I like the Lightning in this matchup, but I like them to win a close barn-burner, because the Flyers defense will present a real test. I can see this game ending with a score of 3-1 or 2-1, which is why I’m going to take the Lightning coming in under 3.5 goals on Tuesday night.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning Under 3.5 Goals (-170)
