Here is something not everyone realizes about NBA players: They are voracious consumers of league news. When somebody does something extraordinary, the best of them are inspired to seize the next spotlight.

We are coming off an epic night in the NBA that featured Joel Embiid scoring 70 for the 76ers and Karl-Anthony Towns dropping 62 for the Timberwolves. The bar has been set high for those playing tonight.

Those playing tonight include MVP contenders Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, plus we have an interesting second half of a TNT doubleheader with the Lakers playing the Clippers. Somebody will do something extraordinary, guaranteed.

But which one? Too hard to say in a parlay picks column. So we strategize otherwise.

There are 10 teams in action and only two of those teams (Brooklyn and Portland) have losing records. We are just three weeks away from the NBA trade deadline and we should see a flurry of player movement because the races in both conferences are considered wide open, even though the Boston Celtics are worthy favorites in the East. We learned last year (with the Miami Heat, who traded for Terry Rozier today) that a low-seeded team peaking at the proper time can go a lot further than expected. That blueprint is something that nearly every NBA executive is following as we move into the second half of the season.

We do not expect to see anyone go for 70 tonight, but that does not mean we should not expect the unexpected. How does that translate into a winning parlay strategy for tonight? The operative thought is that Embiid-Towns inspiration will produce better-than-usual outcomes from teams playing to their strengths. So let’s go make some money, shall we?

Best NBA Parlay Picks Today – Tuesday, January 23, 2024: 4 Leg Parlay Picks (+1147)

Nuggets vs Pacers Prediction and Pick

Even though Pacers All-Star candidate Tyrese Haliburton is out as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury, the Pacers are stoked after acquiring Pascal Siakam from the Toronto Raptors last week. They have now had several days to orient him with their schemes, and Indiana has shown all season that it is all about offense. They average an NBA-high 125 points per game and we should expect a track meet as the defending champion Nuggets come to town on the fourth stop of a five-game Eastern Conference road trip. The Pacers have gone under in six of their last seven games. This is their first home game since Jan. 10 and we expect them to return to being the scoring machine they were a month ago with T.J. McConnell stepping up his game as the replacement point guard. The Siakam acquisition puts them in the legit contender mix and this is a game in which they will be rested, having not played since Saturday. This line has dropped 6 points since this morning.

Leg-1 Parlay Pick: Pacers and Nuggets to go over 237.5 points (-115)

Knicks vs Nets Prediction and Pick

The first half of the TNT doubleheader features the two New York teams, with Brooklyn back in Kings County for the first time since a three-game road trip ended with them giving up a game-ending 22-0 run to the Clippers in an epic collapse Sunday afternoon. They are going up against a Knicks team that is playing very well offensively but shows its collective bonafides on the defensive end of the court. The Knicks have gone under in 10 of their last 11 games, and 14 of their last 17. They should be able to shut down a Nets team whose collective psyche has been crushed by a 2-10 stretch since Dec. 27.

Leg-2 Parlay Pick: Knicks-Nets under 222.5 points (-110)

Thunder vs Trail Blazers Prediction and Pick

These teams have played twice this season and let’s just say the Thunder have been in control. They won the first meeting by 43 points and the second meeting by 62, which is something you almost never see in the NBA. Ever. But it is what it is with these two teams and Oklahoma City has a chance to move into a first-place tie with Minnesota atop the Western Conference with a victory. They are very young and they are very good, and whether that can translate into postseason success remains to be seen. But OKC’s players are old enough to know that clinching homecourt advantage for every postseason series they play is of paramount importance. We do not see them faltering in a game that should resemble a layup line if the pattern from the first two meetings is followed. Half of the Portland roster has a bag packed awaiting a trade.

Leg-3 Parlay Pick: Thunder – 13.5 points vs. Trail Blazers (-115)

Jazz vs Pelicans Prediction and Pick

These teams have played three times already this season and this will be the last meeting. Utah has gone 2-1 against New Orleans and this line is being impacted by the Jazz’s current two-game losing streak, which followed a string of six consecutive wins that included quality victories over Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Denver and Indiana. Utah lost in overtime against Houston last time out, which was preceded by a 5-point loss to Oklahoma City. The Jazz have not lost by 7 or more points since Jan. 5 when they visited Boston and the thinking here is that this line is too high and is rating the Pelicans (25-18) too highly. New Orleans lost to Phoenix by 14 last time they played, which was last Friday. It is almost unheard of in the NBA to have a game coming off three full days of rest, but the Pelicans are getting that treat. The trend to look at is margin of victory in New Orleans’ last dozen games. It has been double digits, in both losses and victories, in 11 of those games. Zion Williamson’s crew simply has not played many close games lately. They have a Jekyll and Hyde type of production with their last four home games being a 22-point victory over Brooklyn, a 16-point loss to the Clippers, a 20-point victory over the Hornets and a 14-point loss to Phoenix. There is a temptation to take an underrated Jazz team on the moneyline at +200, but this is a safer pick on a parlay card.

Leg-4 Parlay Pick: Jazz + 6.5 at Pelicans (-115)

Putting these four wagers together produces a +1147 parlay line on the Betway Board, meaning a $10 wager would return $124.75. And it allows bettors to avoid wagering on the unpredictable Lakers in the late game against the Clippers, when the injured LeBron James’ Jekyll and Hyde outfit could do just about anything before the dust settles after the trade deadline. Good luck!
