Joel Embiid is now the prohibitive favorite to win a second consecutive Most Valuable Player award. His odds dropped to -106 on the Betway Board Tuesday morning, the first time all season somebody has had a minus next to their name.

That’ll happen when you score 70 points, but one key factor to keep in mind is that Embiid must play 65 games in order to qualify for MVP, meaning he can only miss seven more of Philadelphia’s 40 remaining games.

In his eight NBA seasons, Embiid has played more than 65 games only twice: In 2021-22 (68) and 2022-23 (66).

Nikola Jokic is second on the board at +250, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is +375. Both are playing tonight, with Jokic on the road in Indiana and Gilgeous-Alexander at home in Oklahoma City where the Thunder will have a chance to move into a first-place tie in the Western Conference.

Neither player can be ignored on what should be a “Can You Top That?” type of evening one night after Embiid’s 70 and Karl-Anthony Towns’ 62 made it the most exciting night of the current NBA season.

There are five games on the schedule tonight and we are cherry-picking four of them with the notion that the players who have been killing it all season will do so again tonight, with a little extra flair to try to draw some of the attention away from Embiid, who now leads the league in scoring with an average of 36.1 points per game, 2.5 more than the next closest player, Luka Dončić (the +700 fourth choice on the Betway board.).

Listed below are the player props we like tonight. More coming tomorrow, and again Thursday when everyone with an affinity for witnessing greatness gets set to see what Embiid can do for an encore when the Sixers play the Pacers.

NBA Player Prop Bets to consider for Tuesday games on January 23, 2024

Nikola Jokic 35+ points

The Joker’s road trip makes stop No. 4 on an Eastern Conference swing in Indianapolis, where the Nuggets take on the NBA’s highest scoring team. Jokic scored 42 against Washington on Sunday in his last game, and he was 12-for-13 from the field against these same Pacers (with the exception of Pascal Siakam, who was not yet traded for) two Sundays ago. Jokic has had 35 or more points only twice in December and January after doing it two times in November, which is why this line is so high. Last season, Jokic scored 35 or more nine times during the regular season and four more times in the postseason. He is more likely to have a triple-double than to score 35, but his triple-double line is a mere +135. We would not be touting this if Jokic had not gone for 42 in the nation’s capital over the weekend against Daniel Gafford, who is a similar defender to Indiana center Myles Turner.

The pick: Nikola Jokic to score at least 35 points (+310)

Jalen Brunson 40+ points

When the Knicks play in Brooklyn, a majority of the crowd is comprised of fans cheering for the team in orange and blue. It has always been that way at Nets-Knicks games, even when the Nets were based in East Rutherford and Newark, N.J. Brunson is a player who feeds off a crowd’s energy and he is coming off two of his highest-scoring games of the season. He had 38 against Toronto and 41 against Washington, which were preceded by a pair of 30-point games. He is averaging more than 23 shot attempts over the past four games and there is no reason why that should not continue tonight against a Nets team that has collapsed over the past month. Brunson has dropped 40 or more four times this season and he is in the national spotlight tonight on TNT.

The pick: Jalen Brunson to score 40 or more points (+625)

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 2+ blocks

You never hear SGA mentioned among the top Defensive Player of the Year candidates, but the guy has more blocked shots than any point guard in the NBA. He had two or more blocks once in October, four times in November and twice in December. He has only done it once in January, which means he is due. We should see an extra special effort from Oklahoma City tonight as they play for a first-place tie atop the Western Conference. This is the most enticing line available for SGA for something he has done several times before. Alternative idea: SGA has scored 40 or more points five times, but hasn’t reached that number since Dec. 29. He is overdue on that one, which is priced at +425.

The pick: Shai Gilgeous Alexander to block at least 2 shots (+360)

D’Angelo Russell first points

LeBron James is out tonight with a left ankle injury, which means the pressure will be on others to step up. Russell has been playing well since moving back into the starting lineup earlier this month and he attempted the Lakers’ first shot in their last game against Portland (it missed). Russell ended up with a team-high 21 attempts against the Blazers, making 14 and scoring a season-high 34 points. He is the type of player who will take a “heat check” shot straight out of the gate and he will be greenlighted tonight to do whatever he can offensively to make up for the absence of James. Russell has never been shy about shooting and this is a worthy crapshoot pick that will hit or miss early in the second part of TNT’s doubleheader.

The pick: D’Angelo Russell to score the game’s first points (+900)
