The New Jersey Devils, winners of four of their last five games, visit the Columbus Blue Jackets for the second time this season on Saturday night. The Devils will be looking for revenge after losing to the Blue Jackets at home three weeks ago. Will New Jersey be able to pull off a victory, or will the Metropolitan Division’s last-place team manage to stun them again? Let’s take a closer look at this matchup.

Devils at Blue Jackets Preview

The New Jersey Devils will travel to Columbus on Saturday with the goal of showing an inferior Blue Jackets team just how dominant they can be.  The Devils are coming off a 2-1 overtime win over the Boston Bruins, while the Blue Jackets are coming off an impressive 6-5 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. These teams met back in November on Black Friday in Newark, and Columbus stole the show that afternoon by winning 2-1.

Devils vs. Blue Jackets Predictions and Picks

When the Columbus Blue Jackets visited New Jersey on Black Friday, they jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the first period and never looked back. The Jackets held on for a rather surprising win over the favored Devils that afternoon even though New Jersey outshot Columbus 38-28. The difference for the Blue Jackets was goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, who arguably had his best game of the season in shutting down an aggressive and very talented Devils offense. Merzlikins is not expected to start the rematch on Saturday night at Columbus, which would mean his backup, Spencer Martin, will have to face a Devils team out for revenge. Martin’s presence could lead to a lopsided score in the Devils’ favor, because he is nowhere near as talented as Merzlikins. The Devils are the eighth-highest scoring team in the NHL this season, and the Blue Jackets allow the third-most shots on goal per game. Without Merzlikins in net to counter New Jersey’s aggressiveness in the offensive zone, this could be a long night for Columbus. If he gets the start, Martin will not be able to repeat what Merzlikins did in New Jersey. The Devils will attack this Blue Jackets defense and capitalize multiple times on their way to a big win at Nationwide Arena.

The Pick: New Jersey Devils -1.5 (+105)

Predicting over/unders in New Jersey Devils games is never easy because the Devils are very strong defensively. New Jersey, which has historically made defense a focal point, allows opponents the NHL’s ninth-fewest shots on goal. While the team’s goaltenders haven’t been as consistent as its defensemen, netminder Vitek Vanecek has played very well over his past two games. Vanecek held the talent-loaded Boston Bruins to just one goal in his last outing and also limited the Flames to two goals a week ago at Calgary. Columbus’ offense simply can’t compare to what the Bruins and Flames have. When they beat the Devils last month, the Blue Jackets scored a pair of early goals on a day when Vanecek wasn’t playing. If Columbus scores even once on Saturday against Vanecek and this suffocating Devils defense, I will be impressed. Although New Jersey could flirt with this total by itself, I lean toward the under in this one.

Winger Jesper Bratt ranks second among the Devils in points this year – just one point behind superstar linemate Jack Hughes. His 12 goals are also tied with Tyler Toffoli for the New Jersey lead. When these teams met in November, Bratt fired six shots at the Columbus net, only two fewer than Hughes’ game-high eight. Bratt has had at least three shots on goal in five of his last six games, including three games with five shots. Reaching his line on Saturday shouldn’t be a problem.
