With only two days of scheduled games remaining before the NHL All-Star break, the pace is really picking up for teams pursuing playoff spots. The trade deadline draws nearer each day, and various front offices will have to decide if they plan to be buyers or sellers before March 8. What happens in the next couple of weeks will be crucial, and some struggling teams will need to show that they can win now or risk seeing major shakeups in the near future. With only two games slated for Tuesday night, let’s take a closer look at the one that features the Eastern Conference’s last-place team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, who can start salvaging their season with an upset win at St. Louis.

Blue Jackets at Blues Preview

The Columbus Blue Jackets and St. Louis Blues will meet for the second and final time this season on Tuesday night. The Blue Jackets took care of business in the earlier matchup on Dec. 8 in Columbus after grabbing a 2-1 lead on a goal by rookie Adam Fantilli late in the first period. From there, the Jackets never looked back and went on to a 5-2 victory. However, a lot has changed since Dec. 8. The Blue Jackets remain NHL bottom-feeders as the Eastern Conference’s last-place team, but the Blues, who hold one of the Western Conference’s two wild-card playoff spots, are really heating up as they ride a five-game win streak into Tuesday’s matchup

Blue Jackets vs. Blues Predictions and Picks

Aggressive starts are particularly important for the St. Louis Blues, and they have played a big role in the team’s current five-game winning streak. In three of their last five games, the Blues have scored the first goal, and during the streak, St. Louis has trailed only once at the end of the first period.

When the Blues faced the Blue Jackets in Columbus nearly two months ago, St. Louis fell behind early and could never recover. Since they have home-ice advantage on Tuesday, expect the Blues to go right on the attack against a Blue Jackets defense that allows the NHL’s second-most goals per game and fourth-most shots per game to opposing teams.

The Blues’ offense has been quite inconsistent this season, but the team is averaging 3.8 goals per game during its five-game winning streak and appears to have found its rhythm.  Look for St. Louis to come out firing on all cylinders in the effort to grab an early lead. If the Blues can do that, they should be able to cruise to victory.

Although they hold the final Western Conference playoff spot, the Blues currently sit only fourth in the NHL’s Central Division and have a long climb ahead of them if they want to pass the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, and Winnipeg Jets. This matchup with the Blue Jackets should be an easy one for a Blues team that certainly can’t afford losses to weaker opponents right now. Give me St. Louis to get this done in regulation.

The Pick: St. Louis Blues Win/Draw/Win (-110)

Few NHL teams are weaker defensively than the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are allowing the league’s second-most goals per game and fourth-most shots per game. Unfortunately for St. Louis, the Blues’ defense isn’t much better and has also been known to struggle in allowing the NHL’s eighth-most shots and 13th-most goals this season. Given the fact that this game features two teams that are weak in their own zone, I should be leaning toward the over as far as the total for this one. However, both teams are very inconsistent when it comes to scoring goals, and the Blue Jackets are weak across the board. With that in mind, I simply can’t trust these teams to reach the over in this game. Give me the under here, because there are some nights when I suspect that my fellow Betway writers and I could manage to score more goals than either of these teams.

The Pick: Under 6.5 (+105)

Best NHL Player-Prop Bets for Blue Jackets vs. Blues

Robert Thomas

Center Robert Thomas has been so crucial to the St. Louis Blues this season that if he were a basketball player, we’d refer to him as a great point general who sets up all of his teammates. He leads his team in both points and assists this season and is also tied for the team lead in goals. So, picking Thomas to record one assist against one of the worst defenses in hockey is my favorite player prop for Tuesday night’s game between the Blues and Blue Jackets. Thomas has recorded at least one assist in each of his last five games and seven of his last 10.

The Pick: Robert Thomas 1+ Assists (-134)

Best Same-Game Parlay NHL bets today for Blue Jackets vs. Blues: 3-Leg Parlay Pick (+380)

Money Line We’re going to kick off our same-game parlay with a relatively safe start and piggyback off our regulation-win play. This time we’ll take the St. Louis Blues straight up on the money line. The Blues are the better team in this matchup and should take care of business at home on Tuesday night.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: St. Louis Blues ML (-175)

Robert Thomas Center Robert Thomas continues to put pucks on net while also setting up his teammates for multiple goals during the Blues’ current five-game winning streak. As mentioned earlier, he has recorded at least one assist in all five wins, but it’s also worth noting that he has registered at least two shots on goal in three of those five games. So, let’s target his shots total for our second leg of this parlay.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Robert Thomas 2+ shots on goal (-225)

Pavel Buchnevich Left wing Pavel Buchnevich has been red-hot during the Blues’ five-game winning streak with goals in three of the five games. He has a total of four during the stretch and will have an opportunity to add more on Tuesday against an inferior Columbus defense. I think this game should be a feast for Buchnevich and the Blues, so let’s round out this parlay by picking him to score.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Pavel Buchnevich anytime goalscorer (+150)
