With so many NHL teams already battling for their playoff lives coming out of the league’s All-Star break, there are seven games on the schedule for Thursday night. We’ll focus on a game that involves two teams currently outside the playoff picture but well within striking range to enter it with a run of success. Those teams are the Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils, who will be facing each other for the second time this season.

Flames vs Devils Preview

The Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils meet for the second time in the 2023-24 season on Thursday night. Both enter this game as sixth-place teams in their respective divisions, and came out of the weekend All-Star break strong by winning their most recent games. There’s no doubt that a winning streak would be just what the doctor ordered for both teams to climb into the playoff race. New Jersey took the first matchup with a 4-2 win at Calgary on Dec. 9. The question is … who will take the rematch?Flames vs. Devils Predictions and Picks

New Jersey’s 4-2 victory over the Flames in December might seem like a more lopsided win than it actually was. That first meeting of these teams was a true back-and-forth affair. The Flames jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before the Devils took control with two goals in the second period. They went up 3-1 midway through the third, but the Flames battled back to make it 3-2 with 5:14 remaining. If it weren’t for an empty-net goal in the final minute, this would have been a one-goal game. Bettors who didn’t watch that first game should therefore expect a very close score on Thursday, because this second matchup should have a similar feel. I expect Calgary to play a little better defensively on Thursday, since Jacob Markstrom will start in goal. Markstrom missed the game in Calgary, when current AHLer Dustin Wolf was called up to tend the nets. Markstrom is a big upgrade over Wolf, and he’s the reason I lean toward the Flames in this game.

The Pick: Calgary Flames ML (+110)

Round 2 of this season series between the Flames and the Devils should be much like Round 1, although the presence of Jacob Markstrom in Calgary’s net will be a boost to the Flames in their own zone. In any case, both teams’ offenses have been lethal this season. The Devils rank fifth in the NHL with 3.46 goals per game. The Flames are back in 17th at 3.06 goals per game, but they have the talent to score at a high rate when they overcome their problems with consistency. Having said all that, I can see the total going either way in this one. Both offenses, and New Jersey’s in particular, are very talented, but we’re going to trust the goaltenders and lean toward the under here.

The Pick: Under 6.5 (+110)

Best NHL Player-Prop Bets for Flames vs Devils

Jacob Markstrom

The New Jersey Devils’ offense is no joke, since this team is fifth in goals scored per game. That means the pressure is really going to be on Calgary's defense here, and most important, on goaltender Jacob Markstrom. The veteran Swedish netminder enters this game with a 15-13-2 record and .913 save percentage. He has averaged 26.6 saves over his past five outings and will be in for a big night if he can protect the net Thursday. The Devils don’t average a lot of shots on goal, managing to be very effective despite their limited attempts, but they will need to have a high volume of shots against Markstrom. If the Devils are aggressive in the offensive zone for three periods and reach the league average of at least 10 shots on goal in each, then Markstrom should hit his saves prop easily.

The Pick: Jacob Markstrom over 27.5 saves (-118)

Best Same-Game Parlay NHL bets today for Flames vs. Devils: 3-Leg Parlay Pick (+575)

First Period Goals We’re going to switch up our usual same-game parlay strategy in this game and go with a first-period under here, because I think both defenses will set the tone early. When the Devils and Flames played at Calgary in December, only one goal was scored in the first period. I see this game going in that same direction, thanks to Jacob Markstrom’s presence in goal for the visiting team.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Under 1.5 (+135)

Jesper Bratt New Jersey forward Jesper Bratt has been a pivotal player for the Devils throughout the 2023-24 season, and that won’t change for the rest of the year. Back in December at Calgary, Bratt found the back of the net once and added an assist in his team’s 4-2 win. He will be heavily involved in this rematch and will be firing off shots as usual. He had five shots on goal in the game at Calgary, and he has also had four or more in three of his last five games I like Bratt to continue shooting the puck in this rematch.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Jesper Bratt 4+ shots on goal (+145)

Puck Line As mentioned above, this game is going to be another defensive battle. While I think the Flames will win this game outright, I’m going to protect the parlay here by taking Calgary on an adjusted puck line.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Calgary Flames +2.5 (-400)
