Week 3 of the 2023-24 NHL season got off to a fast start on Tuesday with the league’s “Frozen Frenzy,” which saw all 32 NHL teams take part in an extremely action-packed slate. A total of 102 goals were scored in Tuesday’s 16 games – marking only the eighth 100-goal day in NHL history. The league’s 93 unique goal-scorers were the second-most in a single day of NHL history, trailing only the 94 goal-scorers from April 29, 2022. Longtime Boston Bruins veterans David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron both retired during the offseason, so I certainly didn’t expect this team to get off to a 6-0-0 start. Indeed, I thought there would be some sort of adjustment period after the departure of such important players. The Bruins, however, literally look like they haven’t skipped a beat. Boston is allowing the NHL’s fewest goals per game this season, and the Bruins’ offense has remained consistent –- scoring at least three goals in every game. On Thursday, the B’s host a rebuilding Anaheim Ducks team that has managed to remain competitive. Anaheim’s defense has done a good job limiting the opposition scoring, and the Ducks rank 11th in the league defensively in terms of goals allowed per game. Netminder Linus Ullmark will get the start in goal for the Bruins on Thursday night. He just faced this Ducks team on Sunday, when he stopped 31 of 32 shots in a 3-1 road win. Expect a similar performance from Ullmark on Thursday night as well as a similar performance from his teammates when Boston looks for win No. 7.

The Seattle Kraken had an impressive come-from-behind victory on Tuesday night that ruined our parlay. We should get our revenge on Thursday night, when the Kraken face a much tougher opponent in the Carolina Hurricanes. Penalties have caused problems for the Hurricanes, who lead the NHL in penalty minutes, but winger Sebastian Aho is back from an injury just in time to help his team end its three-game losing streak. For their part, the Kraken just aren’t a very good team. Seattle allows the NHL’s sixth-most shots on goal per game and scores the third-fewest goals per game. The Kraken embarrassed this Hurricanes team 7-4 just one week ago in Seattle, but the Hurricanes will get all kinds of revenge on Thursday night.

It’s hard to write off any hockey team that has a player of Sidney Crosby’s caliber, but it’s easier to do it when the opposing team has a player named Nathan MacKinnon, who right now is just as good if not better than Pittsburgh’s superstar captain. Colorado has surrounded MacKinnon with a slew of offensive talent, and the Avs currently rank second behind Detroit in the goals-per-game category (4.50). Colorado also ranks third in the NHL defensively, allowing only two goals per game. The Avalanche are one of the league’s top teams again this year after returning their entire core from last season. They have started out 6-0-0 and are clearly looking to reclaim the Stanley Cup. This team is a powerhouse that hasn’t missed a beat, and it will look to retain its perfect record by the end of Thursday night’s game at Pittsburgh.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I picked the Philadelphia Flyers to win a game, but as I said in Tuesday’s predictions, this team has turned the corner this year. The Flyers’ offense is much improved. Travis Konecny already has five goals on the season, and fellow top-six forward Cam Atkinson is right behind him with four. This is a young team that is growing up in front of our eyes, and it is going to have a lot of value this season, much like the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference. Philly goaltender Carter Hart has looked impressive this year and was particularly sharp with 26 saves against the NHL’s best team, the Vegas Golden Knights, in a 3-2 road loss on Tuesday night. The Minnesota Wild are gritty, but this Flyers team is on the verge of another win after getting to overtime against the Dallas Stars and giving the Golden Knights a major scare. Look for the Flyers to get over the hump at home and record their fourth victory of the year on Thursday.
