The ice is already starting to heat up in Week 2 of the new NHL season after Tuesday’s battle between two of Western Conference’s top teams – the Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights -- went into an epic shootout that Vegas managed to win at home. Meanwhile, Chicago rookie sensation Connor Bedard is fitting in nicely with the Blackhawks, who are currently in third place in the Central Division. Let's now dive into a 12-game Thursday night slate to determine which teams are improving and which ones are declining.

NHL Best Bets Today: Odds, Picks and Predictions

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/19

Moneyline: Maple Leafs (-130), Florida Panthers (+120)
Spread: Maple Leafs -1.5 (+160), Florida Panthers +1.5 (-240)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Florida Panthers Prediction and Pick

The Florida Panthers’ Cinderella run to last spring’s Stanley Cup Final has not carried over into the 2023-24 NHL season. Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky is allowing 3.43 goals per game, including the five goals he gave up against Winnipeg last Saturday. The Panthers’ offense ranks 21st in the league in scoring with 2.67 goals per game, and nothing is really clicking for Florida right now. A surprise road win over the New Jersey Devils in their most recent game on Monday might make it seem that the Cats got a big momentum boost heading into Thursday’s home game against Toronto.  However, that will not be the case, because this game will belong to the Maple Leafs. Florida eliminated Toronto in the second round of the last spring’s playoffs, taking the series in five games. The Maple Leafs have since reloaded and, despite their 4-1 loss to Chicago earlier this week, it’s safe to say that this is an emerging team that is locked in to start the season. Toronto will get its revenge on Thursday night.

The Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs ML (-130)

Edmonton Oilers vs. Philadelphia Flyers Panthers Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/19

Moneyline: Oilers (-190), Flyers (+175)
Spread: Oilers -1.5 (+110), Flyers +1.5 (-140)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

Edmonton Oilers vs. Philadelphia Flyers Prediction and Pick
The Philadelphia Flyers spoiled our parlay on Tuesday night with an impressive 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks. Flyers goaltender Carter Hart was phenomenal, recording a 26-save shutout as Philly’s offense held its own. Although the Edmonton Oilers started their season with two losses to the Canucks, they have rebounded from that and will take care of business on Thursday night. In their 6-1 win at Nashville on Tuesday, the Oilers looked like the team hockey fans expect them to be this season. Apart from his performance at Ottawa last Saturday, Hart has his 2023-24 season off to a great start. However, as was the case in the Senators game -- when he gave up five goals -- I expect him to be overwhelmed by the high-powered Oilers offense.

The Pick: Edmonton Oilers ML (-190)

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Winnipeg Jets Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/19

Moneyline: Golden Knights (-110), Winnipeg Jets (+100)
Spread: Golden Knights -1.5 (+200), Winnipeg Jets +1.5 (-275)
Total: Over/Under 5.5 goals

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Winnipeg Jets Prediction and Pick

The Vegas Golden Knights haven’t missed a beat since winning the Stanley Cup last season and show no sign of championship fatigue. In fact, Vegas looks like an even better team this year, which should worry the 31 other NHL clubs. Knights goaltender Adin Hill, expected to start on Thursday night at Winnipeg, has been phenomenal this season --allowing just 1.31 goals per game with a .951 save percentage. At the other end of the ice, Vegas’ skaters are averaging 3.50 goals per game. That’s a little lower than what might be expected, but that number comes in the wake of a defensive battle vs. Dallas, which the Knights escaped with a 3-2 OT shootout win. Having just won that showdown between the Western Conference’s top two teams, Vegas must be feeling very confident going into Winnipeg. Golden Knights center Jack Eichel has been amazing through the first four games, and I’ll continue to ride the Vegas train all season long because this looks and feels like the best team in hockey.

The Pick: Vegas Golden Knights ML (-110)

Dallas Stars vs. Anaheim Ducks Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/19

Moneyline: Stars (-110),  (+100)
Spread: Golden Knights -1.5 (+200), Winnipeg Jets +1.5 (-275)
Total: Over/Under 5.5 goals

Dallas Stars vs. Anaheim Ducks Prediction and Pick

The Anaheim Ducks got their first win of the season in convincing fashion on Sunday – beating the Carolina Hurricanes 6-3 at home. That is a big win on paper, since the Hurricanes are expected to be one of the top teams in the NHL. The reality, however, is that the Canes have been very much out of sync and have made a lot of mistakes to start the season as the NHL’s second-most penalized team. The Ducks also unveiled their purple retro Mighty Ducks jerseys in that game, so they almost had to perform well (I’m joking, but those jerseys did look amazing). All joking aside, the Ducks home game against Dallas on Thursday will be a lopsided match. The Stars just went toe-to-toe with the league’s best team in Vegas and will have no problem handling the Ducks in this one. Dallas only lost a possible division title last season because it wasn’t able to close out games in regulation. The 2022-23 Stars’ 14 overtime losses were detrimental. Although their focus is on closing out games out in regulation this season, the Stars have yet to do it. Both of their games so far have gone all the way to shootouts. That will change tonight when the Stars win in regulation on the 60-minute line.

The Pick: Dallas Stars Win/Draw/Win (-160)
