The 2023-24 NHL season’s opening week has already brought fans some excitement. The Chicago Blackhawks staged a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on opening night, and the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights beat Seattle without showing any sign of championship fatigue in their 4-1 win. The season’s second night saw Chicago Blackhawks rookie sensation Connor Bedard score the first goal of his NHL career against the Boston Bruins. Wednesday also brought the season’s first overtime shootout, where the Toronto Maple Leafs escaped a near upset by the Montreal Canadiens. With great hockey ahead of us, let's break down Thursday night’s slate in preparation for another action-packed night.

Spread: NY Rangers -1.5 (+175), Buffalo Sabres +1.5 (-225)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

New York Rangers vs. Buffalo Sabres Prediction and Pick

One of the season’s handful of battles between New York State’s hockey teams gets under way Thursday night, when the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres both open their seasons. The Rangers are coming off a disappointing postseason despite having so much talent on their roster last spring. There remains a definite win-now expectation, since the Blueshirts have an aging squad. Meanwhile, this could be the season that the Sabres shock a lot of NHL fans. This Sabres team led the NHL in goals scored for much of last year, and it returns its 10 top goal scorers from last season as well as a fully intact core. Wings Tage Thompson and Alex Tuch might be one of the most underrated duos in the NHL, and Thompson is perhaps the league’s most underrated superstar. While Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin still poses a tough test for any opposing team, New York will likely take on a new identity this season in the wake of former head coach Gerard Gallant’s departure. Many experts likely expect the Rangers to win this game with Shesterkin in goal, but he is not invincible. There were a few games that definitely got away from him last year, particularly during a stretch in March. It’s also worth noting that both of Shesterkin’s games against the Sabres last season went into overtime. Give me the Sabres at home with an upset here, since they are looking to shock the NHL world this season.

The Pick: Buffalo Sabres ML (+110)

Detroit Red Wings vs. New Jersey Devils Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/12

Moneyline: Detroit Red Wings (+220), NJ Devils (-250)
Spread: Detroit Red Wings +1.5 (-120), NJ Devils -1.5 (-112)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

Detroit Red Wings vs. New Jersey Devils Prediction and Pick

The pressure is on Detroit GM Steve Yzerman this season. Red Wings fans want to see this team reach the postseason for the first time since 2016. Now that Detroit’s captain and leading goal scorer, Dylan Larkin, is locked into a long-term contract, the time has come for the Wings to find a way back to the postseason. However, their playoff quest will be put on hold during their season-opener, because this New Jersey Devils team is loaded from top to bottom and will handle the Red Wings at home. New Jersey’s Vitek Vanecek will start in goal on Thursday. In his last matchup against Detroit, the Devils netminder allowed just one goal against a very similar Red Wings team. New Jersey has returned its top five goal-scorers from last season, and center Jack Hughes is a superstar. Devils win this one easily.

The Pick: New Jersey Devils ML (-250)

St. Louis Blues vs. Dallas Stars Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/12

Moneyline: St. Louis (+175), Dallas Stars (-200)
Spread: St. Louis +1.5 (-138), Dallas Stars -1.5 (+110)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

St. Louis Blues vs. Dallas Stars Prediction and Pick

If the Dallas Stars had managed to close out more games in the third period last season, they would have easily won the NHL’s Central Division title. Unfortunately, the Stars’ 14 overtime losses in 2022-23 played a big role in enabling the Colorado Avalanche to win the division. With all 10 leading goal scorers back from last season, this Dallas team is going to be just as good if not better in 2023-24. Having goaltender Jake Oettinger in net means the Stars will always be locked in defensively. Knowing they must do a better job at closing out games out this season, the Stars should come out hot and stay hot for a full 60 minutes. They will do just that in their season-opener against St. Louis on Thursday. Oettinger faced the Blues once in 2022-23 and made 25 saves for a 1-0 shutout win at home. That happened in the final game of last year’s regular season. Look for the Stars to shine again in Dallas in the first game of this year’s regular season.

The Pick: Dallas Stars ML (-200)

Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/12

Moneyline: Vegas Golden Knights (-225), San Jose Sharks (+200)
Spread: Vegas Golden Knights +1.5 (-106), San Jose Sharks -1.5 (-125)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks Prediction and Pick

The Vegas Golden Knights have returned 22 of the 27 players from last season’s Stanley Cup championship team. In their season-opener on Tuesday, the Knights showed the rest of the NHL that there is no championship fatigue in Vegas right now by dominating the Seattle Kraken 4-1. This is a hungry team with a lot of chemistry, and center Jack Eichel and winger Mark Stone form one of the NHL’s best 1-2 punches. The Golden Knights will be a Stanley Cup contender again this season because they are just loaded from top to bottom. Logan Thompson will start in goal on Thursday. In his only game against San Jose last season, Thompson allowed three goals in a 5-2 loss inflated by the Sharks’ back-to-back empty-net goals in the final two minutes. Don’t let that one game affect your decision in picking a winner tonight, because these Golden Knights are on a mission.

The Pick: Vegas Golden Knights ML (-225)
