Steelers vs Eagles Preview

Despite returning to practice on Wednesday, last year’s Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt will not suit up against the Eagles. Watt, who tore his pectoral muscle in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, would be a huge boost for a Steelers defense that has had had its struggles. While they rank just outside the middle of the pack in points allowed per game with 23.1, they rank towards the bottom of the league with 394.3 yards allowed per game.

As for the Eagles, their offense has been clicking on all cylinders as they’re top five in the NFL in both yards per game with 394.5, and points per game with 26.8. The Watt news is a sigh of relief for the Eagles as it would slow this offense down, but it still wouldn’t shut it down.

Wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith have been a dangerous tandem for opposing defenses this season and quarterback Jalen Hurts has manned the ship, getting it done through the air and on the ground. Running back Miles Sanders has kept the ground game consistent, ranking in the top ten in rushing yards with 485 on the season.

Steelers vs Eagles Predictions & NFL Expert Picks Week 8

High spreads are tough, but if you really dive into this matchup the 11 points makes a lot of sense. Rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett has shown potential at times this season but, as most rookies do, he's made mistakes. Pickett, who has seven interceptions on the season to just two touchdowns will have a tough time on Sunday against this Eagles secondary that ranks fifth in the NFL in opposing passing yards allowed with an average of 188 per game.

With no Watt, the Eagles should have no problem moving the ball against this Steelers defense. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith will create long days for opposing cornerbacks Ahkello Witherspoon and Levi Wallace. Running back Miles Sanders, meanwhile will beat up this Steelers defense and likely will be the focal point in the second half as the Eagles will run away with this game.

The Pick: Philadelphia Eagles -11 (-110)

Pickett will struggle in this matchup and may even set a new career high for interceptions thrown in a single game, which is currently at three. He's reached that number twice this season, once against the New York Jets and then last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. Eagles cornerbacks will be salivating for this matchup as Darius Slay, Avonte Maddox, and James Bradberry will all be competing for their team’s first interception of the game.

With turnovers expected to be high from the Steelers side, I do like the over here as I see the Eagles exceeding 30 points in this matchup quite easily. The Eagles will likely have a few drives that  start with a short field due to Pickett’s mistakes, and they will capitalize.

As for the Steelers, running back Najee Harris will be the X-factor in this over/under. If Harris can help establish the ground game and get into the high 80s or low 90s on the ground, a threshold he’s yet to exceed this season, then this offense could start to click. The Eagles 12th-ranked rushing defense will have something to say about that as they allow opposing teams an average of just 109.8 yards per game on the ground.

It’s not clear if the Eagles will roll out newly-acquired defensive end Robert Quinn on Sunday, but even if they do, expect Harris to get this ground game going, which will open up the pass game just enough to get the Steelers into scoring position a few times.

The Pick: Over 43 (-110)

NFL Same Game Parlay Picks Today

A 2-Leg Steelers @ Eagles Same Game Parlay

I know I touched on it above but if the Eagles want to win this game they’ll have to do it through the air and with their weapons outside.

The route running ability of A.J. Brown causes headaches for any opposing defense. So, while Hurts isn’t hitting Brown across the middle or deep down the sideline, he’ll be looking at DeVonta Smith whose route running skills have made him a tough cover in the NFL. Steelers cornerbacks, Ahkello Witherspoon and Levi Wallace will have a long afternoon Sunday.

A.J. Brown over 64.5 receiving yards (-115)
DeVonta Smith over 59.5 receiving yards (-115)

A 3-Leg Steelers @ Eagles Same Game Parlay

The Steelers are likely going to be playing from behind in this game so they’ll be passing a lot. Now Pickett will face one of the hardest pass defenses that he’ll face this year, but he should exceed the 35.5 passing attempts. It might not be pretty, but he’ll be throwing a lot on Sunday.

As for Hurts, he’ll lean on the passing attack early on and I could see him getting two passing touchdowns by halftime. Wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith will be matchup nightmares for this Steelers secondary this Sunday.

Najee Harris is averaging around three catches a game and about 12 receiving yards per game. In a game where they’ll likely struggle to establish the run due to the Eagles impressive run defense and the scoreboard, look for the Steelers to utilize the passing game to get Harris involved. He’s too talented to script him out of the gameplan here, and the Eagles 12th-ranked rushing defense will make it tough for him to do it on the ground.

Kenny Pickett over 35.5 passing attempts (-120)
Jalen Hurts over 1.5 passing touchdowns (+110)
Najee Harris over 14.5 receiving yards (-115)

A 4-Leg Steelers @ Eagles Same-Game Parlay

Despite a Steelers offense that is trying to find its way with rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett against a defense as stout as the Eagles, these next few props may come as a surprise. However, Pickett is a gunslinger and, even though he does throw a lot of interceptions, he doesn’t let it affect him too much.

Freiermuth was key for the Steelers last year in the red zone as he had multiple games where he found the end zone. Pickett and him are starting to grow their chemistry and I think Freiermuth will score on Sunday.

As for Hurts and Brown they’ve become a scary threat together. Brown, who leads all Eagles in red zone targets with nine, finds the end zone for a third time on Sunday.

Kenny Pickett over 1.5 passing touchdowns (+200)
Jalen Hurts over 1.5 passing touchdowns (+110)
Pat Freiermuth anytime touchdown scorer (+275)
A.J. Brown anytime touchdown scorer (+110)
