Panthers vs Bengals Preview

The Cincinnati Bengals will be disappointed with their 4-4 record at this point in the season considering last year's Super Bowl appearance and the money spent in free agency to improve the roster.

The Bengals are yet to beat a team with a stellar defense this season. When challenged up front, they lose. Myles Garrett wreaked havoc on the offensive line on Monday night, and it was the same story against the Ravens, Cowboys and Steelers. In all four games, the Bengals scored 20 points or less, and three of those were games they had Ja’Marr Chase available for. He’s out for a few weeks with a hip injury, causing even more problems for the Bengals offensively.

Carolina have suffered their fair share of adversity so far this season. Coach Matt Rhule was relieved of his duties with the team went 1-4 through the first five weeks. The Panthers then traded their most dangerous player in Christian McCaffrey, traded another one in Robbie Anderson after his sideline tantrum, and have resorted to PJ Walker at quarterback after yet another trial in Baker Mayfield failed to bear any fruit.

That said, Carolina has refused to lay down and die. If it wasn’t for DJ Moore getting so pumped after what looked like a game winning touchdown, the Panthers would be 3-5 and currently top of the division. Unfortunately, Moore’s excitement cost the Panthers their extra point attempt field position, and Eddy Pineiro proceeded to miss it, forcing the game into overtime. We know the rest, but despite the loss, this Panthers team can apply pressure on a quarterback and make you work for a win. We saw it against Tampa Bay, and if they can affect Tom Brady enough behind his line, you bet they can do it against the Bengals.

Panthers vs Bengals Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NFL Odds Week 9

Moneyline: Carolina Panthers +275, Cincinnati Bengals -333

Spread: Panthers +12.5, Bengals -12.5

Total: Over/Under 42.5

Carolina have some talented players scattered across their defense. Namely Brian Burns, who the Panthers turned down two first round picks for ahead of this week's trade deadline. Burns is set to be a key piece for the future of the franchise and an attractive talent for any potential head coach to come in and work with.

Burns has five sacks so far this season, which is almost half of the teams total of 12. Carolina ranks 30th in sacks for the season, with only the Detroit Lions and the Las Vegas Raiders ranking lower.

That said, their sack total doesn’t tell the whole story. Carolina was disruptive enough against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to allow only three points against them. Brady might not be playing his best football this season, but to hold him to three points is no easy feat.

On the other side of the football, D’Onta Foreman's three touchdown masterpiece on Sunday will take the sting out of the Christian McCaffrey trade a little for Panthers fans. Foreman rushed 26 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns after Chuba Hubbard was ruled out for the game. Foreman was excellent in Tennessee last year whilst filling in for the sidelined Derrick Henry, with three 100+ yard games in 10 starts.

PJ Walker looks a lot more comfortable than Baker Mayfield did and has thrown some beautiful balls in the last two games, including a 62-yard missile to DJ Moore in the dying seconds of the Falcons game on Sunday. It’s a game the Panthers should have won, and they’ll be bitterly disappointed that they didn’t.

The Bengals will want to forget the Monday night performance against the Cleveland Browns as quickly as possible. Joe Burrow did everything he could behind what was once again a terrible performance by the Bengals offensive line.

Burrow is second in the league for sacks taken behind only Justin Fields in Chicago. He’s been sacked 29 times in eight games, averaging over 3.5 sacks every game. Considering the money spent in free agency to sure up the offensive line, the results so far this season have been a disaster. The Bengals signed tackle La’el Collins and guard Alex Kappa to major deals, adding center Ted Karras for additional experience, and despite all three starting, the whole unit looks terrible.

They can’t keep Burrow upright and running back Joe Mixon is putting up career low numbers after a phenomenal season in 2021. They need to fix it quickly if they want to return to the playoffs this season, and if they can’t do that against one of the league's worst sack percentage teams in the Carolina Panthers, they don’t stand much chance.

Panthers vs Bengals Predictions and Picks

With Ja’Marr Chase out and the Bengals really struggling to piece together a single drive down the field against the Browns, this heavy spread betting line has me thinking. If Ja’Marr Chase was playing, I think I’d snap call the Bengals against the spread, but without him they looked like a different outfit offensively, and if it hadn’t been for Tee Higgins' heroic catch for a touchdown late in the game, Joe Burrow's stat line would have looked a lot different.

Carolina is not an efficient team rushing the passer, and that works in Cincinnati’s favor on this occasion. They need to have a strong week with the offensive line working in unison to allow Burrow to do what he does. When he’s not pressured, we’ve seen what he’s capable of. That’s the difference in this game. Double Brian Burns and have everybody else do their job effectively, and I’ll take the Bengals to clear this spread. Don’t let me down.

The Pick: Cincinnati Bengals -12.5 (-110)

I’m betting the over for this game. The Bengals are pretty much middle of the pack across the board defensively this season, allowing 20.5 points per game and doing a solid job of keeping things close when the offense is struggling.

In three of their four losses the Bengals have allowed 23 points or less and just not been able to get it done offensively, the anomaly being the Browns game on Monday night. So, how many points does this Bengals defense allow against PJ Walker and the Panthers this weekend?

One thing worth noting was the loss of corner Chidobe Awuzie, who tore his ACL in Monday night's game. The Bengals secondary will miss him and are now thin at the position, potentially opening themselves up against the pass in the second half of the season.

I think the Panthers can score 17 points here, and the Bengals should clear 30. Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd need to step up and if the offensive line does their job, the Bengals bounce back at the weekend.

As for Carolina, pounding the football with D’Onta Foreman must continue, taking pressure off of PJ Walker, who can throw a touchdown or two when called upon. I’m thinking Bengals 34 Panthers 17, clearing the over in the game.

The Pick: Over 42.5 Points (-110)

Best NFL Player Prop Bets for Panthers vs Bengals Week 9

Joe Burrow

In the Bengals' last three losses this season, Burrow has thrown for less than the 261.5-yard line set for this game. In all four wins, he’s thrown over that total. The Bengals might face pressure against the Panthers, but it won’t be as disruptive as the likes of Myles Garrett or the combo of Micah Parsons and Demarcus Lawrence.

I believe Burrow will have more time against the Panthers, and more time typically results in a good day for the talented quarterback, even without star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.

The Pick: Joe Burrow Over 261.5 Passing Yards (-110)

Tee Higgins

Following that same thought process, it’s time Tee Higgins stepped up. If the Bengals want to be there in the playoff picture at the end of the season, they need their talented receivers to step up while Ja’Marr Chase is out.

Tee Higgins is extremely good if you give him the right looks - we saw it late in the game against the Browns - and it doesn’t take much for him to have a big yardage day.

I’ll take Tee Higgins to step up for the Bengals and help them back to a positive record against Carolina.

The Pick: Tee Higgins Over 75.5 Receiving Yards (-110)
