Favorites to win 2023-24 College Football National Championship

The Georgia Bulldogs enter the 2023 season with the country’s best college football betting odds as they pursue a third straight national championship.

There have been many dominant programs in the more than 100-year history of college football, but only one team has ever won three national titles in a row. Minnesota holds that record, but it was set way back between 1934 and 1936, when champions were selected by sportswriters in an era before there were college football playoffs.

So, in terms of the modern era, the Bulldogs could make history in January. They will attempt to do so with both a revamped defense and Carson Beck taking over Stetson Bennett’s role at quarterback.

Alabama has the second-strongest odds to win college football’s national championship this season, and they will also be attempting to do it with a new starting quarterback.

The Tide have boasted a long line of talented QBs over the past few seasons – a group that includes Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones, and Bryce Young. All four are now starting quarterbacks in the NFL, and the program has high hopes that former four-star recruit Jalen Milroe will be able to add his name to that list.

Milroe has not yet been named the Tide’s starter, since Nick Saban is keeping a lid on things for now, but the dual-threat quarterback is expected to emerge as the team's leader.

While Alabama’s championship odds aren’t too bad at +550, a lot of that will ride on the performance of the young third-year QB. He threw five touchdowns and three picks in seven games last season, which included a start against Texas A&M in Week 6.

Milroe’s ability to take off on the ground is outstanding, and that could make watching the Crimson Tide a lot of fun this season.

Finally, the Ohio State Buckeyes round out the top three favorites for the national championship despite their ongoing training-camp battle for the starting QB role. Third-year junior Kyle McCord was expected to claim the top job, but according to reports, redshirt freshman Devin Brown has been lighting it up in camp. Suddenly, Buckeyes fans are not so sure which way it’s going to go.

Whichever quarterback gets the start, there’s no doubt that the Buckeyes have one of the nation’s most talented group of receivers this season, headlined by Marvin Harrison Jr., the son of the Colts legend. As a result, Ohio State feels it can compete with anybody in the country this year. Harrison is expected to be one of the top players in all of college football in 2023 after both he and teammate Emeka Egbuka had over 1,000 receiving yards last season.

Among this year’s ACC teams, Clemson has the best national championship odds at +1600. Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik could be one of the best in the country, and he enters this season with another year's worth of experience under his belt.

The Texas Longhorns have the best championship odds of any team in the Big 12. They are closely followed by the Oklahoma Sooners, as both teams will compete in that conference for the final time before they transition over to the SEC.

2023-24 College Football Championship Winner Predictions and Best Bets

Many insiders believe Carson Beck is more than capable of taking the Georgia Bulldogs back to the CFB playoffs. Given his team’s talented offense, he certainly has the supporting cast to do it.

Beck had an opportunity to transfer elsewhere last season after other schools inquired about his availability. He decided to stick it out at Georgia with the goal of continuing to learn and preparing to take over from Stetson Bennett. So far, his master plan is going just as he had hoped.

There’s no doubt the Bulldogs have built one of college football’s most impressive programs under Kirby Smart. The defense is just as good as it was last year, and the offense is arguably more talented than last season.

Brock Bowers is one of the best tight ends in the country, and this year his accompanying receiving corps will also include Missouri transfer Dominic Lovett, who had 828 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers last season.

Smart’s defense has been a breeding ground for several NFL first-round picks over the past two seasons and is expected to be the No. 1 defense in the country in 2023.

Senior Nazir Stackhouse can blow up the run with the best of them on the interior of the defensive line, where sophomore Mykel Williams is already regarded as one of the best players in all of college football this season.

It starts up front for the Bulldogs on defense, and there’s no reason they can’t replicate the 12.8 points allowed per game that led them all the way to a blowout victory in last season’s National Championship Game.

The Pick: Georgia Bulldogs to win the National Championship  (+225)

2023-24 College Football Championship Sleepers Pick

While Alabama and Ohio State both have great CFB playoff odds, Michigan is one of the strongest teams that knows exactly who its starting quarterback will be this season.

A QB battle is not a bad thing, and fans know that it makes the competitors better, but J.J. McCarthy gives Michigan no doubt about the No. 1 quarterback on its roster. McCarthy offers his team a strong chance to win every time he takes the field.

Ohio State is ahead of Michigan in terms of its championship odds right now and is also favored to win the Big Ten. That might be the case, but Michigan looks remarkably strong this year, and this season presents the Wolverines with one of their best chances to win a national championship under head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Running back Blake Corum decided to return for the 2023 season, and his partnership with Donovan Edwards is one of the most dangerous in the country. Last year, these two talented backs combined for over 2,400 rushing yards. While Corum is the starter, Edwards erupted late in the season after Corum was forced out with an injury.

Edwards ran for 216 yards and two touchdowns against the Buckeyes in Week 13. In the Big Ten championship game against Purdue, he managed another 185 yards and a TD.

The Wolverines have added two experienced transfers to their offensive line in Myles Hinton and Drake Nugent. That should help to fortify the front and allow more production both on the ground and in the passing game.

The question is going to be whether Michigan’s defense can step up against some of college football's most powerful offenses. If it can, expect the Wolverines to be in the national-title conversation. All eyes will be on that Nov. 23 clash with the Buckeyes at the Big House. The winner of that game should see its NCAAF championship odds go up significantly if both teams enter the showdown with unbeaten records.

I like the Wolverines as an outside pick. I think both their Big Ten championship odds and their odds to make the college football playoffs are great value this year. Let’s put a bet on them to win the national championship as a dark horse and see how it unfolds.
