Here is a wagering idea that can work for you before the ball even goes up for the opening tipoff tonight in Philadelphia as the Sixers play host to the Denver Nuggets.

Find a friend who knows a little, but not a lot, about the NBA. Then propose a $10 wager that uses this question as an opener: “Hey buddy, I bet you cannot tell me how many shots Nikola Jokic has missed this month. I will even give you a hint: He has attempted 84 of them.”

Your buddy scratches his head, does a little math inside his head and says to himself: “This must be a trick question, and Jokic must be having quite a good month if I am getting asked this question.”

Your buddy then assumes that Jokic must be making them at a high 60 to low-70 percentage rate, and he delivers his guess: “Twenty.”

Your response: “Grab your wallet and hand over a $10 bill, knucklehead.” That is because the correct answer is 19, as Jokic has had games in which he shot 12-for-13, 13-for-16, 8-for-9 and 6-for-7.

Jokic is ranked 13th in the NBA in field goal percentage, with Daniel Gafford of Washington and Jacob Poeltl of Toronto tied for the league lead at .683. Jokic is at .582 in large part because he has missed 76 3-point attempts, but the January he is having has made him the prohibitive favorite in the MVP race, where he is listed at +175 and is being chased by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City, who is +250.

Both of those players are in action tonight on a light night of three NBA games, and yes, we are going to tout one of them but not the other for reasons that are explained in detail below.

NBA Player Prop Wagers for Tuesday, January 16, 2024

Nuggets vs Sixers Player Prop Bets Tonight

Nuggets vs. Sixers Preview

Time: 7:30 p.m. EST
Venue: Wells Fargo Stadium, Philadelphia, Pa
TV Channel: TNT
Live Stream: NBA League Pass, NBC Sports Philadelphia, NBA App.

Joel Embiid has been on a tear in every game he has been able to play for the past month and a half (a knee injury has kept him on the shelf for a handful of games). Embiid has scored at least 30 points in 17 straight games and has had at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in 16 straight. He leads the NBA in scoring at 34.9 points per game. Here is the important thing: Embiid absolutely adores the spotlight, and it is killing his ego that people are belittling his MVP award from last season because he flamed out in the playoffs as the Sixers were eliminated 4-2 by the Boston Celtics. When a player is playing to defend his pride, he is extra dangerous. That is where we are with Embiid this season.

Nuggets vs. Sixers Injury Report

The Nuggets listed all of their starters as questionable on their 7:30 a.m. injury report. This may just be gamesmanship or may be a sign that they are going to test Silver’s new load management policy and play a bunch of reserves tonight on national television while Silver is busy commuting back to Los Angeles from Inglewood after announcing details of the plans for the Clippers new arena.  Whether it is gamesmanship or not will not be known until shortly before tipoff. Philadelphia is not reporting any injuries.

Best Nuggets vs Sixers Player Prop Pick: Joel Embiid to score 33+ points (-290).

Kings vs Suns Player Prop Bets Tonight

Kings vs. Suns Preview

Time: 10:00 p.m EST
Venue: Talking Stick Resort Arena, Phoenix, AZ
TV Channel: Kiswe
Live Stream: NBA League Pass, Kiswe, Comcast Sports California, NBA App.

This is the only game that is not on national television, which is kind of a shame because it features the team that is favored to come out of the West when all is said and done. Sacramento was a tough team to face a year ago because they played at a pace that nobody else was playing at, and they were running their offense through point center, Domantas Sabonis. In the regular season, going up against a team that is playing a unique style creates an instant headache. The postseason is a different matter, as we saw with the Kings go seven games with Golden State and lose the finale at home by 20 points. This season, they are more of a known commodity and are scoring fewer points because they are no longer taking teams by surprise with their style of play. Sabonis has registered 10 triple-doubles, four of which have happened this month. He had 28 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds the last time these teams met, a 120-105 Kings victory on Dec. 22.

Kings vs. Suns Injury Report

Sacramento power forward Keegan Murray is listed as questionable with a right hip injury. The Suns are not reporting any injuries to their regulars.

Best Kings vs. Suns Player Prop Pick: Domantas Sabonis over 42.5 combined points, rebounds and assists.

Thunder vs Clippers Player Prop Bets Tonight

Thunder vs Clippers Preview

Time: 10:30 p.m. EST
Venue: Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, Calif
TV Channel: TNT
Live Stream: NBA League Pass, NBA App.

The second half of the TNT doubleheader brings us the best young team the NBA has seen in a generation, the Oklahoma City Thunder, going up against a Los Angeles Clippers team that is fourth in the West. The Clippers have the second best home record, 16-4, and are listed as a 6.5 point favorite in large part because of that home record. These teams have played just once this season, with the Thunder winning 134-115 at home on Dec. 21 as Kawhi Leonard was sidelined with an injury. Oklahoma City has not made a whole lot of national television appearances over the past several seasons because they have been horrible, to put it mildly. This year is different, and it should be noted that their MVP candidate, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, was drafted by the Clippers and spent his first NBA season in Los Angeles. He started 73 games for the Clippers before he was traded along with Danilo Gallinari and five first-round draft picks to Oklahoma City for Paul George. In the NBA, going up against the team that once traded you is known among the players as an “alumni game,” and we should expect SGA to have an extra ounce of motivation even though he has played 17 games against the Clippers while a member of the Thunder. The “alumni game” factor is not as much of a factor for George, because he got sent to a preferred destination after spending his first several seasons in Indianapolis and Oklahoma City.

Thunder vs Clippers Injury Report

Clippers center Ivica Zubac is out with a right calf strain. The Thunder are reporting no injuries.

Best Thunder-Clippers Player Prop Bet: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over 42.5 combined points, rebounds and assists.
