Spurs vs. Suns Predictions and Picks

Wemby. If there is one word that defines the hype surrounding the start of the 2023-24 season, it is that particular nickname for 7-foot-4 San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, the first overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft.

The guy is a freak athlete with a point guard’s handle and a shooting guard’s range, and defensively he is so long, he can block shots that you would have never thought he’d have a chance of blocking just a split-second earlier.

Wemby and the Spurs travel to Phoenix tonight for the second half of a TNT doubleheader. The Suns have yet to debut their big three of Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker, since the latter two have been dealing with injuries. Beal (lower back tightness) is out, and Booker (foot sprain) is doubtful, putting the Suns in much the same position as the Cleveland Cavaliers will be in against the New York Knicks in the TNT doubleheader’s opening game.

Phoenix rode Durant for 26 points in just 29 minutes against the Utah Jazz in the Suns’ previous game, when Grayson Allen and Eric Gordon comprised the starting backcourt. That game, a 126-104 Suns win, was never competitive, and the trick tonight for Durant as far as putting up big numbers will be whether the Spurs, a dreadful outside shooting team, can keep it competitive.

Phoenix is favored by 6½ points.

Here is what we like …

Best NBA Same-Game Parlay Picks Today for Spurs vs. Suns – 4-Leg Parlay Pick (+12000)

Player 3-pointers: Kevin Durant 3+ (+185)

Kevin Durant has scored 18, 39, and 26 points in his first three games and has shot just 3-for-11 on 3-pointers. If you think this guy is going to continue to shoot 27 percent from 3-point range, you are going to have an argument on your hands. Durant has not made more than two 3-pointers in a game since last season’s conference semifinals against the Clippers, so he is extremely overdue. Last season with Phoenix, he made at least three 3-pointers in three of the eight regular-season games he played for the Suns after being acquired in a trade from Brooklyn.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Kevin Durant to make 3+ 3-pointers (+180)

Player Points: Eric Gordon 20+ (+210)

Eric Gordon has been a known commodity in the NBA for his entire career -- one that has evolved in terms of moving him into a plug-and-play mode as needed. He was a No. 1 option early in his career with the Los Angeles Clippers, but in six and a half seasons with the Rockets, five with the Pelicans, and a half-season with the Clippers to finish last year, he has always been a secondary offensive producer who has averaged at least 13 points. In the Suns’ last game against the Jazz, nobody took more shots than Gordon -- 14 in 26 minutes. With Devin Booker and Bradley Beal both likely out, he should be high-volume again against the youngsters on San Antonio who were toddlers when Gordon was a rookie.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Eric Gordon to score 20+ points (+180)

Player Rebounds: Victor Wembanyama, 10+ (+525)

The big fella has missed his last eight 3-point shots over the past two games, including a 40-point road loss to the Clippers in his first NBA game outside of San Antonio. He had 12 rebounds, three blocks, and three steals just two games ago against Houston, and we expect those type of fantasy lines to become his norm as the season moves on. Blocks and steals for Victor Wenbanyama are enticing choices tonight, but rookies often get pegged for quick whistles when they get too aggressive with their hands, and we expect Wemby to be a referee target for roughly his first 18 to 20 games. So, because coaches always say “you cannot coach size,” we are going with the safer play of double-figures in rebounds, especially because it is priced so enticingly.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Victor Wembanyama to grab 10+ rebounds (+525)

Game Line: Suns – 6 ½

Look, the Spurs are coming off a 40-point loss, and the Suns added a ton of depth in the offseason for nights such as tonight, when two of the top three are likely out. All the offseason additions are capable veterans, and when you are looking at a San Antonio team that made losing by 40 appear so easy, you have to expect this one to end with Phoenix winning by seven points at a minimum.

Leg-4 SGP Pick: Suns – 6 ½ points

Putting those four picks together produces a Same-Game Parlay line of +12000, meaning a $10 wager would return $1,210 if it hits. Good luck!
