Suns vs. Mavericks Predictions and Best Bets

At the very least, we have a matchup tonight of the two teams that have changed ownership hands most recently in the NBA, making Mark Cuban and Robert Sarver very rich men in terms of the amount of cash they have in hand.

Cuban still controls basketball operations for the Dallas Mavericks but sold his stake for $4 billion on Dec. 29 to the families who run the Las Vegas Sands corporation, led by Miriam Adelson and her son-in-law Patrick Dumont.

Ishbia closed on his purchase of the Suns and Mercury last spring, joining his brother, Justin, in the purchase of more than 50 percent of the Suns and the WNBA Phoenix Mercury. That price was also $4 billion.

If we see the NBA expand anytime soon, we may see that price topped by whoever brings teams to Seattle, Las Vegas, Mexico City and who knows where else. For now, these rich kids get to pit their toys against each other tonight, with the Mavs (24-19) one game behind the Suns (25-18) for tonight’s matchup in Phoenix which will be nationally televised by ABC.

So, this is a prime-time event that can get everyone’s minds off of politics the day after the New Hampshire primary (OK, maybe not all of them).  The Suns come in as a 2.5-point favorites. Phoenix is 15-26-2 against the spread, the second-worst record in the league, while Dallas is 23-20 ATS.

Luka Doncic is questionable with lower back stiffness, Kyrie Irving is questionable with a sprained right thumb, and Seth Curry is questionable with a sprained left ankle.

So, we look for him to be a bit of a ballhog tonight and go for 40 or more for a third straight game. “These things happen in threes” is the operating thought on this pick.

Grayson Allen 3+ 3-pointers 

Allen has made at least three 3-pointers in five straight games, including three straight with exactly three after he made nine of them against the Kings two Tuesdays ago. The line on four of more 3-pointers is +360, which is tempting, but we have to be conservative somewhere. Also, if the Mavs are without Irving and Doncic, this one could be a blowout in which Allen’s minutes are reduced. Three is safer.

Jusuf Nurkic 2+ blocks 

The Bosnian Beast is in a pretty horrific offensive slump after producing 15 double-doubles in the first 40 games of the season. He had two blocks against the Bulls two nights ago, reaching two or more for the 15th time this season. We like the +255 line on this because it is not like it is a rarity. Plus, he is going against a rookie, Derek Lively, who telegraphs his shots.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Jusuf Nurkic to block at least two shots (+255)
