2023 Go Bowling at the Glen Starting lineup

Saturday’s scheduled qualifying might not go off as planned because, according to the Weather Channel, there is a chance of rain that would prevent it from taking place. If the rain comes, then NASCAR will use a formula developed in 2020 to determine starting lineups in the absence of qualifying.

NASCAR’s starting-lineup formula factors in four variables -- each driver’s finish in the most recent race (25 percent), each car owner’s finish in the most recent race (25 percent), each car owner’s rank in the owner standings (35 percent), and each driver’s fastest-lap rank in the most recent race (15 percent). The first two categories are combined for drivers who drive the same cars in every race. Based on that formula, here is what the starting lineup would look like if qualifying doesn’t take place:

Formulated Watkins Glen starting lineup

1st – Kyle Larson
2nd – Chase Elliott
3rd – Martin Truex Jr.
4th – Tyler Reddick
5th – Christopher Bell
6th – Michael McDowell
7th – Daniel Suarez

10th – Alex Bowman

24th – Harrison Burton

2023 Go Bowling at the Glen Betting Preview and Predictions

Sunday’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen International will be run on the final road course of the regular season. Road courses always provide fans with the most action, since these courses have tight turns. Bumper-to-bumper contact happens a lot more frequently than it does on speedways, where drivers can really spread out from each other. The race has been named Go Bowling at the Glen for sponsorship reasons since 2018, but the name reflects the nature of this track. Just like the pins are close together in a bowling alley, the drivers will be close together during the race on Sunday.

2023 Go Bowling at the Glen Best Bets: Top picks

In the wake of last week's crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Chase Elliott needs to find a spot in the winner's circle in one of these last two regular-season races to secure his playoff spot. Elliott is one of NASCAR’s best drivers on any track, but road courses are his specialty, since he is one of the top drivers at the Cup Series level on road courses and short tracks. Given his history, it comes as no surprise that Elliott is one of the Go Bowling at the Glen favorites. If he is going to get a win in one of these final two races, it will likely be this one at Watkins Glen International.

The Pick: Chase Elliott to win (+400)

While each manufacturer has its fair share of great drivers representing its brand every weekend, Toyota might have the very best road course driver at the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series level. Christopher Bell thrives on road courses, short tracks, and dirt tracks, since he grew up racing on tracks of this style. After leading 100 out of the 250 laps at Bristol Motor Speedway’s dirt track earlier this season, Bell easily won a race he dominated from start to finish. While his playoff spot is already secured due to that victory at Bristol, being the top Toyota manufacturer this Sunday just seems fitting. While Toyota drivers Martin Truex Jr., Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin have all been great this year and are valued right around Bell, look for Bell to take care of them on Sunday, when he’ll be seeing all of those guys in his rear-view mirror.

The Pick: Christopher Bell top Toyota Manufacturer (+350)

As is the case for several drivers, including Chase Elliott, A.J. Allmendinger is in a situation where he needs a win to make the playoffs. Like Elliott and Bell, Allmendinger has had great success on road courses, short tracks, and dirt courses. In the first race at Watkins Glen International with the next gen cars (held last year), Allmendinger finished in second place behind Kyle Larson. Looking to clinch a playoff spot by winning this year, Allmendinger has good value to finish in the top 10 but has amazing value to win this race.

The Pick: A.J. Allmendinger to win (+1400)

NASCAR Sleepers Picks for Sunday’s 2023 Go Bowling at the Glen Race

With two races to go, Ty Gibbs finds himself just outside the playoff bubble. While top-10 or even top-5 finishes are essential for Gibbs at this point, if he really wants to nail down a playoff spot, then winning at Watkins Glen International on Sunday would be the perfect way for him to do it. A previous winner at Watkins Glen International back in 2021 at the Xfinity level, Gibbs, who finished 26th last year at the Cup Series level, has had success at this track. He has been a sleeper pick to win over the past few races and has remained competitive -- finishing 12th last week on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course.

The Pick: Ty Gibbs to win (+2500)
