2023 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard Starting lineup

The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard’s starting lineup will be determined on Saturday after drivers take to the road course for an 11:35 a.m. ET practice race, followed by a 12:35 p.m. ET qualifying race to determine the starting lineup for the NASCAR race on Sunday. The road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the most challenging one on the NASCAR schedule, and its 82 laps and 200 miles will be a constant test for all drivers in Sunday’s race.

The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season is winding down, and there will be only two upcoming NASCAR races left in the regular season once the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard concludes on Sunday. Several drivers will be competing for one of the NASCAR Cup Series’ four remaining playoff spots on Sunday. Since a win guarantees a driver his spot in the postseason, those near the bottom of the standings will be going all-out at the Brickyard. This is also the last road course of the regular season, so expect nonstop action on every lap with so many drivers focused on making the playoffs. 2023 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard Best Bets: Top picks

Chase Elliott’s inability to finish the race at Michigan International Speedway last Sunday has put him in a must-win situation if he wants to make the playoffs this year. Elliott was sidelined for six of this season’s races while recovering from a fractured tibia and missed an additional race due to a NASCAR suspension. He knows that after missing so much action, he will likely need a win in one of the final three races to reach the postseason.

"My stance has been the same since I got back," Elliott said at Michigan. "I think we need to win."

Fortunately for Elliott, he has more wins on road courses than any other active driver on the NASCAR roster. Since this course is the hardest on the NASCAR schedule, Elliott is always a favorite when racing at the Brickyard’s road course.

The Pick: Chase Elliott to win (+700)

With three races left in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season,  A.J. Allmendinger doesn’t necessarily need a win to secure a playoff spot, because he currently sits just three spots out of playoff position. However, Allmendinger will need to close out the regular season with a bare minimum of three top 10 finishes to clinch his berth. An outright win on Sunday would secure a playoff spot for Allmendinger, and that’s a definite possibility because he won on the Indianapolis road course in 2021 and finished seventh last year in the next-gen cars. Look for Allmendinger to go for the win on Sunday and remain in the top 10 for most of the race.

The Pick: A.J. Allmendinger to finish top 10 (-112)

Like Chase Elliott, Christopher Bell is one of NASCAR’s best drivers on short tracks, road courses, and dirt courses. Bell’s NASCAR stats reveal that he dominates on these types of tracks, having already won at Bristol’s Dirt Course earlier this season. While he might not risk ruining his playoff position by pushing too hard for a win, Bell is certainly a favorite to finish in the top 10 at the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard on Sunday. Picking him to win is has its appeal, too, and is worth sprinkling, but NASCAR fans know that Bell and “top 10” belong together in this race like peanut butter belongs with jelly.

Ty Gibbs has made big strides during his second year racing at the Cup Series level and has put himself in playoff position with three races remaining. While many outside factors could combine to ensure his playoff spot, Gibbs can’t take his foot off the gas. He’ll need to perform well in these last three races to make it to his first Cup Series postseason. Gibbs hasn’t had much success on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in past seasons, but the playoffs are on the line, and that normally brings out the best in NASCAR drivers. Gibbs has the talent to compete for a win and is my top Verizon 200 at the Brickyard sleeper in these NASCAR picks today.
