Ranking the Top 10 Greatest Atletico Madrid Players of all time

**All references are specific to the player’s time at Atletico Madrid

  1. Radamel Falcao

Position: Striker
Nationality: Colombia
Years Active: 2011-2013
Awards: 1x Europa League, 1x Super Cup, 1x Copa Del Rey

Yes, current Rayo Vallecano striker Radamel Falcao lasted just two seasons in Spain’s capital as a Colchonero. After signing for €40 million from FC Porto, Falcao morphed into arguably the best striker in world football.

Falcao scored a staggering 70 goals in 91 games for Atletico. He took over the Europa League final and Super Cup in 2012, putting in two man-of-the-match performances and doing whatever he wanted with the ball. He scored a brace in the Europa League final and a hat trick in the Super Cup.

  1. Tomas Renones

Position: Right-back
Nationality: Spain
Years Active: 1984-1996
Awards: 1x La Liga, 3x Copa del Rey, 1x Supercopa, 1x UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup

Former Atleti right-back Tomas Renones has the third-most appearances in Atletico Madrid's history, featuring 483 times over parts of 13 seasons. The former Barcelona youth product joined Atleti when he was 24 and never looked back.

Renones won five major trophies with Los Colchoneros, including 4 Copa del Reys and a La Liga (in his final season). Though often lost in an Atletico Madrid squad full of other stars, he did enough to earn 19 caps for Spain. He’s more than just some “Atletico Madrid old player.”

  1. Adelardo Rodriguez

Position: Midfielder
Nationality: Spain
Years Active: 1959-1976
Awards: 3x La Liga, 5x Copa Del Rey Winner, 1x Cup Winners’ Cup

Former Spanish midfielder Adelardo Rodriguez has the second-most appearances and seventh most goals in Atletico Madrid's history. The attacking midfielder was one of the key engines in the club’s period of dominance in the 1960s.

Rodriguez helped Atleti win 3 La Ligas and 5 Copa Del Reys. His longevity is particularly impressive -- his first Copa victory came in 1960 and his last came in 1976 (known then as the Copa del Generalisimo), though he didn’t start the latter.

  1. Fernando Torres

Position: Striker
Nationality: Spain
Years Active: 2001-2007, 2015-2018
Awards: 1x Europa League, 1x Seconda Division, 1x Champion League Final

Former Atletico Madrid star striker Fernando Torres transcended eras for Los Colchoneros. The Atleti youth product actually debuted while the club were still in the Segunda Division. Eight league goals from the then-18-year-old Torres helped Atletico Madrid secure promotion.

Torres posted five-straight double-digit goal seasons in La Liga before joining Liverpool ahead of the 2007-08 season. After a successful stint at Liverpool (and weird stints at both Chelsea and AC Milan), Torres was back in the red and white by 2015.

While Torres was far less prolific in his second stint, he did help Atleti reach the 2015-16 UCL Final. Torres has the sixth most goals in club history and is currently the coach of the Atletico Madrid U19s.

  1. Gabi

Position: Midfield
Nationality: Spain
Years Active: 2004-2007. 2011-2018
Awards: 1x La Liga, 1x Copa Del Rey, 2x Europa League, 1x Super Cup, 2x UCL Runner-Up

Perhaps if Atletico Madrid won either of the UCL finals former midfielder Gabi played in, he would be remembered even more fondly. The Spanish midfielder captained the club on both occasions, but Atleti fell short to city rivals Real Madrid each time in heartbreaking fashion.

Gabi’s 417 appearances are the ninth-most in club history. He did captain the side to a league title in 2013-14, which came smack-dab in the middle of Real Madrid and Barcelona’s modern dominance and helped Atleti break an 18-year title drought.

  1. Jan Oblak

Position: Goalkeeper
Nationality: Slovenia
Years Active: 2015-Present
Awards: 1x La Liga, 1x Europa League, 1x Super Cup, 1x UCL Runner-Up

Current Atletico Madrid starting GK Jan Oblak has a litany of awards for his dominance in net:

  • 5x La Liga Zamora Trophy (lowest goals/game)
  • 3x UEFA UCL Squad of the Season
  • 4x UEFA La Liga Team of the Season
  • 1x La Liga Player of the Season

Oblak’s La Liga Player of the Season Award came during a dominant 2020-21 campaign where he practically single-handedly won Atleti the league. His post-shot xG +/- that season was a staggering 11.1 -- what’s even more remarkable was his career-best came two years before when it was a whopping +14.3 in 2018/19.

Pure dominance. Oblak is also certainly one of the most notable Atletico Madrid international players.

  1. Diego Godin

Position: Center back
Nationality: Uruguay
Years Active: 2010-2019
Awards: 1x La Liga, 1x Copa Del Rey, 2x Europa League, 3x Super Cup, 2x UCL Runner-Up

One of the most recognizable figures of the Diego Simeone era is the cerebral CB Diego Godin. Signed for a paltry €8 million from Villarreal ahead of the 2010 season, Godin would go on to feature 389 times for the club.

Godin was lauded as one of the best CBs of his generation: 2x La Liga TOTS, 3x UCL Squad of the Season, 1x La Liga Best Defender, 1x IFFHS World Team. The wall of a CB is also the most-capped player for Uruguay.

  1. Koke

Position: Midfielder
Nationality: Spain
Years Active: 2009-Present
Awards: 2x La Liga, 1x Copa del Ray, 2x Europa League, 2x Super Cup, 1x Supercopa, 2x UCL Runner-Up

Current Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke is truly a one-club man. The midfield dynamo had already racked up 618 games for the red and white while still going strong at 32 years old – 1,000 career games for Atleti is still within reach. He has the most appearances in club history.

Koke has started 29+ games in La Liga for Atletico Madrid every year since 2012-13 when he was a 20-year-old bursting onto the scene. He was an assist maestro in his early years, tallying 10+ league assists for five straight years from 2012-13 to 2016-17.

2, Antoine Griezmann

Position: Forward
Nationality: France
Years Active: 2014-2019, 2021-Present
Awards: 1x Europa League, 1x Supercopa, 1x Super Cup, 1x UCL Runner-Up

Current Atletico Madrid ST Antoine Griezmann has stood out amongst his Atleti peers in one way: he’s genuinely been considered one of the best players in the world. The Simeone-era squad has mostly been a sum of their parts greater than the whole kind of unit…except for Griezmann.

Griezmann, the club’s all-time leading scorer, finished 3rd in the Ballon d’Or voting in both 2016 and 2018. He won the La Liga Best Player award in 2015-16 and won 8 La Liga Player of the Month honors.

  1. Luis Aragones

Position: Midfielder/Forward
Nationality: Spain
Years Active: 1964-1974
Awards: 3x La Liga, 2x Copa del Rey, 1x European Cup Runner-Up

Why is former Atleti forward Luis Aragones the greatest Atletico Madrid player of all-time? Here’s his Los Colchoneros CV:

  • Second-most goals in club history
  • 3 La Liga Titles
  • 1 Pichichi Trophy
  • Led club to first European Cup final
  • One of the two most successful managers in club history

Aragones is truly an Atletico Madrid legend.
