Inter Milan had the upper hand when Atletico traveled to Italy in late February, and although the scoreline read just 1-0 in favor of the home team, it could -- and probably should --- have been much greater.

Inter might come to regret not capitalizing on its opportunities in that first leg of its UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup with Atletico. That’s because the Milan team must now to travel to Spain for the return leg against a club known for its strong Champions League performances at home.

Over the years, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid have met three times, with Inter winning two of those matches, and Atletico winning the other. Their last meeting prior to this Champions League Round of 16 was back in 2018, when Inter claimed a 1-0 win.

The first leg of this matchup between two of Europe's finest clubs heavily favored the home team, but Inter Milan squandered several excellent goal-scoring opportunities and had to settle for a 1-0 victory.

Inter forwards Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram made life difficult for the Atletico defense, creating chances for each other and finding space in and around their opponent’s 18-yard box on several occasions.

Martinez had a clear line of sight after receiving a pass in the 18-yard line, but he failed to push the ball out of his feet to generate a powerful enough strike. The Argentinian striker also had a couple of other clear-cut chances, including a powerful header in the second half that he unfortunately directed straight at Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

It was a night when Inter Milan forward Marko Arnautovic should have scored a hat trick, but his first two attempts in front of the goal left a lot to be desired. The substitute was wreaking havoc with his positioning, but he lacked the final touch needed to put Inter in front.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute, with Arnautovic -- following up a parried strike from Martinez – fired a shot into the vacant net.

Atletico was dominated in that Leg 1 game, and the team from Madrid must feel fortunate to have come away from the first half of its Champions League Round of 16 matchup down by just one goal. Oblak made a couple of key saves to keep the game close, but the Spanish club will need to be far more effective offensively if it wants to reach the Champions League quarterfinals.

Bringing in Alvaro Morata from the substitute bench has given Atletico something extra in its attack. However, the opportunities came too late in the last game, and with Antoine Griezmann potentially absent for this one, Madrid’s lack of offensive firepower could pose a problem against Inter.

Inter hasn’t dropped a single match since their Coppa Italia loss to Bologna on Dec. 20, and the Milan team has lost only one league match all season. The Italian powerhouse is brimming with confidence right now, having scored four goals in four of their last six games.

Let’s take a look at the current injury report before delving into our Champions League predictions for this match.

Atletico Madrid vs. Inter Milan Lineups and Injuries

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann is likely out for the Round of 16’s second leg. The Frenchman went off with a sprained ankle he suffered in the first leg.

Griezmann has yet to return to the Atletico lineup, although his ankle injury is thought to be “moderate.” There is a chance he will play against Inter, but it could come down to a gametime decision regarding his fitness.

Inter Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu has been sidelined since early February, and fellow midfielder Stefano Sensi is unlikely to be available for this second-leg match in Madrid.

Atletico Madrid vs. Inter Milan Prediction, Picks, and Betting Tips

Win/Draw/Win

We will kick off these Champions League prop bets in the W/D/W market. Atletico Madrid has not lost a game at home in Spain’s La Liga or the UEFA Champions League this season. In fact, prior to a loss to Athletic Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey in early February, Atletico had a 28-game unbeaten streak at Metropolitano Stadium.

However, given how well Inter Milan has been playing, it’s clear to see why the Italian club is favored to deal Atletico its first home loss of the season. Inter is scoring at will, and the only reason it didn’t score four goals against Atletico in the first leg of this matchup was due to poor finishing. I think Milan will score a couple times in this road match, and I have them winning in my Champions League prop bets for today.

The Pick: Inter Milan to win (+150)

Anytime Goalscorer

Our next Champions League best bet brings us into the Anytime Goalscorer market. Inter Milan has been able to create so many chances for its attacking players, and Atletico’s center-backs were unable to contain Lautaro Martinez just a couple of weeks ago in Italy. Martinez managed to get free headers and clear-cut scoring chances on multiple occasions.

The Milan striker is in red-hot form, having scored 23 goals in 25 Serie A appearances this season, and he has two Champions League goals so far. The longer this game remains scoreless, the more Atletico will have to open up in a bid to score and draw even in the overall matchup. This plays into the hands of Inter Milan and its attackers, who can hit them on the counter.

Bearing in mind that Martinez could have had three goals in the first leg, this game is set up for him to punish Atletico and get on the scoreboard here.

The Pick: Lautaro Martinez to score anytime (+140)
