Best NHL Player-Prop Bets: Wednesday, November 8th, 2023
Auston MatthewsWednesday night’s matchup between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs will be a high-scoring battle, since both teams rank among the NHL’s top 10 in goals per game. With plenty of scoring expected, Leafs center Auston Matthews will certainly be called on to lead the way for Toronto, since he has done that all season. Matthews has a league-leading 13 goals in 2023-24 and ranks second in the NHL with 56 shots on goal. Expect a heavy dose of Matthews on Wednesday night, because Toronto will really need him if it wants to win this all-Ontario battle. Matthews has exceeded his current shots-on-goal prop total in each of his last three games. The Senators aren’t terrible in terms of allowing shots on goal, ranking in the NHL’s top 20, but Matthews is a different breed.
The Pick: Auston Matthews over 4.5 shots on goal (-110)
Alex OvechkinWashington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will be the center of attention in the first game of TNT’s nationally-televised doubleheader on Wednesday night. The hockey world is closely watching Ovechkin’s pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record, which he could break at some point in the next few seasons. Ovechkin trails the Great One by 70 goals and might need more than just this season and the next to do it at his current pace. Don’t expect him to gain any ground on Wednesday, since he will likely have a quiet night. Although he leads the Caps with 43 shots on goal this season, much of that total came from an Oct. 24 game against Toronto, when he fired a remarkable 14 shots on goal. Take away that particular game and Ovechkin is averaging just 2.9 shots on goal this season. This Florida Panthers defense is gritty and has made it hard to get through to their goaltenders in allowing the league’s third-fewest shots this season. As much as it pains me to say this, especially since he’ll be in the TNT primetime spotlight, Ovechkin will struggle in this one.
The Pick: Alex Ovechkin under 3.5 shots on goal (+110)
Matthew TkachukFlorida Panthers right wing Matthew Tkachuk is an NHL superstar, although some of his critics might not want to admit it. Despite having scored only two goals on the season, Tkachuk has been heavily involved in Florida’s offense with eight assists even though opposing defenses always key in on him. Although the Washington Capitals are an NHL bottom-feeder so far this season, the team has managed to make it hard for opponents to score in allowing the league’s 11th-fewest shots on goal per game. Tkachuk’s shooting percentage might be low, but he leads the Panthers with 54 shots this season. Tkachuk has fired 20 shots on goal over his last three games alone, but this pick comes with some risk because Tkachuk has gone under tonight’s 3.5 total four times this season.
The Pick: Matthew Tkachuk under 3.5 shots on goal (-118)
Jack EichelVegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel, one of the top skaters in the NHL, played a crucial role in his team’s Stanley Cup run last season. The Golden Knights take on the Los Angeles Kings Wednesday night in the rematch of an Oct. 28 game at Los Angeles that went all the way to an OT shootout. The Golden Knights, coming off a loss to the Anaheim Ducks, will look to get back to winning against a tough Kings team that has been great both offensively and defensively. Even though Los Angeles allows the NHL’s third-fewest shots on goal per game, targeting Eichel’s shots on goal would seem like a good play here. However, I actually like Eichel to score in this one as he tries to set the tone for a Golden Knights victory. Eichel has six goals on the season, including three in his last two games. He will look to make it at least four goals in three games on Wednesday night.
The Pick: Jack Eichel anytime goalscorer (+140)
