The New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks meet for the first time this season when the Isles visit the Windy City on Friday night. The Islanders enter this matchup having lost five of their last six games, while the Blackhawks have lost four of their last five. Both teams are struggling to get a win, but only one will be able to achieve that goal on Friday.

Islanders at Blackhawks Preview

It seems that the New York Islanders are starting to fall apart, because losing five games in a six-game stretch is never a good thing. The Chicago Blackhawks aren’t in any better shape -- having lost four of their last five games – but, unlike the Isles, the ‘Hawks had no expectation of success this season. The worst news these days for Chicago is the absence of rookie sensation Connor Bedard, who is recovering from surgery on his jaw. He should be back relatively soon, which is critical for the Blackhawks, who play significantly better when he’s on the ice. This is really a must-win type of game for New York, which can’t afford to be embarrassed yet again.  Let’s take a closer look and see if the Islanders will be able to get the job done.

Islanders vs. Blackhawks Predictions and Picks

The New York Islanders will be looking to break out of a huge slump on Friday night in Chicago.  Goaltender Ilya Sorokin is expected to start in net for the Isles, which is a very good thing because he is coming off a 40-save night in Tuesday’s loss at Winnipeg. Although Sorokin has maintained a .910 save percentage and done a great job keeping the Islanders in games, the players in front of him have not been helping out defensively. The Islanders have allowed the NHL’s second-most shots on goal per game in 2023-24, and that has often put Sorokin in a very unfair position. Fortunately for Sorokin, the beleaguered goaltender gets to face the league’s second-worst offense on Friday night, so the Isles should be able to respond to whatever Chicago has to offer. The Blackhawks, who average only 2.18 goals per game, will also be playing without their leading scorer, rookie Connor Bedard, who recently underwent jaw surgery. If the Islanders can’t stop Chicago’s offense in a situation like this, then the team’s front office might find itself in turmoil. Give me New York to win this in regulation.

The Pick: New York Islanders Win/Draw/Win (-150)

This over/under total for this game is interesting because it is set rather low, and deservingly so. Both the Islanders and Blackhawks rank near the bottom of the NHL when it comes to goal-scoring. Chicago is the league’s second-lowest scoring team at 2.18 goals per game, and the Islanders rank only 23rd in the NHL with 2.93 goals per game. The reason this over/under is tricky, however, is because both teams have been so poor defensively and rank among the NHL’s top six in terms of shots allowed per game. If Connor Bedard were playing for the Blackhawks, rather than recovering from an injury, I would have a lot more confidence in my prediction here, but even without him in the lineup, this game’s total should still exceed the over because these defenses are brutal. Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin has done a great job in net this season but, given the present circumstances, I like the total to squeak over in this one.

The Pick: Over 5.5 (-135)

Best NHL Player-Prop Bets for Islanders vs. Blackhawks:

Bo Horvat

Islanders No. 1 center Bo Horvat has been a key part of his team’s offense throughout this season. On Friday, he’ll be going up against a defensively inferior Chicago Blackhawks team that allows the NHL’s sixth-most shots per game. This will certainly open the door for Horvat and his Islanders teammates to have plenty of scoring chances. Horvat has exceeded his current shots-on-goal prop total in just two of his last five games, but he should have no problem going over it on Friday night.

The Pick: Bo Horvat over 2.5 shots on goal (-163)

Best Same-Game Parlay NHL bets today for Islanders vs. Blackhawks: 3-Leg Parlay Pick (+255)

Money Line This is a must-win game for the New York Islanders, who can’t afford to lose to an NHL bottom-feeder like the Chicago Blackhawks. Despite all their own defensive problems, the Islanders are still too talented for this Chicago team and will take care of business on Friday night.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: New York Islanders ML (-250)

Bo Horvat Isles center Bo Horvat should have a lot of success attacking Chicago’s net on Friday night, because the Blackhawks are terrible in their own zone. Horvat is second on the Islanders with 17 goals this season, although he has only scored once in the past five games. Horvat is due, and I have high expectations for him in this one.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Bo Horvat anytime goalscorer (+130)

Total Goals There has been no shortage of inconsistency from the New York Islanders this season, but they have a golden opportunity to show their true worth against the struggling Blackhawks on Friday. The Isles have scored at least four goals in only three of their last eight games, but I expect them to make a statement on Friday night in Chicago.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: New York Islanders total goals over 3.5 (-120)
