We are four weeks into the 2023-24 NHL season, and while there is still a lot of hockey to be played, we are beginning to see some unexpected teams surfacing near the top of their divisions, while some postseason teams from last year are starting to fizzle. Let’s dive into an Eastern vs. Western Conference matchup that will definitely draw some attention on Thursday night.

Moneyline: New Jersey Devils -115, Minnesota Wild -105

Devils at Wild Preview

On Thursday night, the New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild will meet in the second game of a home-and-home series. The opener at New Jersey last Sunday was a back-and-forth game up until six minutes into the second period, when the Devils pulled away by scoring twice in a 44-second span for a 3-2 lead. The Devils would go on to score again in the second and had a commanding 4-2 lead heading into the third period. New Jersey then held off the Wild, limiting Minnesota to just seven third-period shots in a 4-3 win.

Devils vs Wild Predictions and Picks

Minnesota Wild goaltenders Filip Gustavsson and Marc-Andre Fleury have both been subpar so far this season, and both have save percentages below .900. Gustavsson will start Thursday night’s game after Fleury allowed the Devils four goals on 30 shots in the home-and-home opener on Sunday. While Gustavsson is technically Minnesota’s No. 1 goalie, Fleury has been better this season because Gustavsson has had starts in which he has given up six or seven goals. The Devils enter Thursday’s game as the NHL’s second-highest scoring team, while the Wild come into this matchup as the league’s worst defensive team, allowing an NHL-high 4.11 goals per game this season. Given Minnesota’s goaltending woes, look for the talented Devils offense to run right through the Wild again on Thursday night.

The Pick: New Jersey Devils ML (-115)

The over/under total for this matchup is steadily climbing and will likely rise to seven by the time the puck drops. Minnesota and New Jersey combined for 64 shots on goal in Sunday’s home-and-home opener, and the number could have been higher because the Devils are capable of putting up more than just 30 shots against the Wild’s defense. Minnesota allows the league’s eighth-most shots on goal per game this season, so it seems the Devils can go a lot higher than 30 in the rematch. Look for New Jersey to be more aggressive in the offensive zone on Thursday night and really push the tempo in this game. I see the Devils exposing goalie Filip Gustavsson to the tune of five or more goals on Thursday night, which will push this game to the over once again.

The Pick: Over 6.5 (-140)

Best NFL Player Prop Bets for Devils vs Wild on Thursday, Nov 2nd

Jesper Bratt

New Jersey winger Jesper Bratt has been great for the Devils so far this season. He’s the team’s second-leading scorer with six goals and just had his second two-goal game in the 4-3 win over Minnesota on Sunday. A fired-up Bratt saw the opportunity to take advantage of an inferior Wild defense in Newark, so look for him to bring that same energy to this rematch as the Devils take full advantage of their host’s weaknesses.

The Pick: Jesper Bratt over 2.5 shots on goal (-125)

Best Same Game Parlay NHL Week 4 bets today for Devils vs. Wild: 3-Leg Parlay Pick (+900)

Jack HughesDevils star center Jack Hughes has been quiet over the past two games. Although he did score against Buffalo last Friday, he had a total of just three shots on goal in New Jersey’s wins over the Sabres and Wild. In his first six games this season, Hughes had at least four shots on goal five times. Look for him to get back to putting pucks on net against an inferior team on Thursday night.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Jack Hughes over 3.5 shots on goal (-160)

Jesper Bratt

Jesper Bratt continues to be one of the top skaters on this Devils team with six goals on the season. He had not been taking very many shots on goal before exploding for five against the Wild last Sunday. Two of those shots went into the net against the league’s worst defensive team, Bratt didn’t hold back Sunday, and he won’t hold back in the rematch. While a goal seems likely for Bratt in this one, going over his line of 3.5 shots on goal holds too much value to pass up.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Jesper Bratt over 3.5 shots on goal (+195)

Total Goals

As mentioned above, the New Jersey Devils are going to come out even stronger against an inferior Minnesota Wild team on Thursday than they did on Sunday. Minnesota’s defense is the laughingstock of the NHL right now. When the Devils trailed the Wild 2-1 in the second period, they had no trouble rallying for two quick goals to take the lead for good. New Jersey clearly took its foot off the gas in the third period of that game, but since the team is on the road Thursday, I expect it to be at full throttle. Look for New Jersey to notch five or more goals in this game.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: New Jersey Devils over 4.5 total goals (+225)
