It’s a big night in the NHL on Thursday with 12 scheduled games that feature conference matchups, rematches, and first meetings. Indeed, if you like to watch hockey, then Thursday is a night for you. Let’s take a closer look at a game between one team already in the Western Conference playoff picture, the Los Angeles Kings, and another just two points out of the Eastern Conference playoff race, the New Jersey Devils. On Thursday, the Kings and Devils will face each other in the first of two scheduled meetings this season.

The Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils are two of the better NHL teams in 2023-24, so fans should expect some fireworks when they face each other for the first time this season on Thursday night in Newark. New Jersey has come out of the All-Star break with victories in three of five games, while the Kings have stumbled out of the break with a 1-1 record and are coming off of a 7-0 loss at Buffalo. Will Los Angeles bounce back on Thursday night, or will New Jersey keep cruising?

Kings vs. Devils Predictions and Picks

The Los Angeles Kings just suffered their most lopsided loss of 2023-24 on Tuesday, allowing a season-high seven goals at Buffalo. It’s a different story in New Jersey, where the Devils are cruising along toward what could be a second straight playoff berth. January was a particularly rough month for the Kings, and February isn’t looking much better. However, Los Angeles will put a stop to its slide on Thursday when the Kings visit the Devils.

L.A.’s embarrassing loss at Buffalo was a fluke, because this Kings defense is lethal and ranks among the best in the NHL. Hungry and eager to show that Tuesday was an aberration, the Kings will get a tough test in Newark against a Devils team that enters Thursday’s game with the NHL’s ninth-best offense (3.38 goals per game). The Devils have also scored at least three goals in four of their last five games.

So, Los Angeles will be tested defensively, but I know these players will answer the call with the kind of suffocating defense they have displayed on most nights this season. Give me the Kings in a great buy-low spot here as the underdog.

The Pick: Los Angeles Kings ML (+100)

The projected over/under total for this Kings-Devils game is an interesting number, and there will probably be a lot of wagering on the over because many bettors will look at the Kings’ last outing and assume they are weak on defense.  Add the Devils’ offense to that assumption, and these people undoubtedly expect a high-scoring affair. However, I am on the opposite side of that thinking because I know the Kings are going to bring it defensively on Thursday night. Los Angeles will truly put an emphasis on how it performs in the defensive zone, which is why I’m taking the under here. The Devils’ offense has been red-hot this season, and the Kings have also dominated offensively at times, but this is an under play for me because I believe the Kings will respond to their 7-0 loss at Buffalo with a strong defensive effort on Thursday.

The Pick: Under 6.5 (+100)

Best NHL Player-Prop Bets for Kings vs. Devils Tonight

Jack Hughes

New Jersey center Jack Hughes has returned from his injury and looks like he never left. Through his first four games back in the Devils’ lineup, Hughes has two goals, one assist, and a total of 24 shots on goal. The elite skater has appeared both untouchable and dominant, and he will aim for another statement game on Thursday night. The Kings already know they will have their hands full in dealing with New Jersey’s overall depth, but Los Angeles realizes that if it wants to win, it must first and foremost slow down Hughes. Although Hughes has exceeded his current prop total for shots in all four games since his return, I’m going to lean toward the under for this game, because I think the Kings will be focused on stopping him.

The Pick: Jack Hughes under 3.5 shots on goal (-105)

Best Same-Game Parlay NHL bets today for Kings vs. Devils: 3-Leg Parlay Pick (+245)

Money Line I’m going to continue a trend here and start off this same-game parlay with a pick on the overall game result -- taking Los Angeles on the alternate spread in this one. As mentioned above, I like the Kings to win the game outright, but in case they don’t, this alternate puck line will be more than enough to cover us.

Leg-1 SGP Pick: Los Angeles Kings +2.5 (-500)

First Period Once again, I really believe this Kings defense is going to be locked in on Thursday night, and I expect Los Angeles to set the tone by shutting down New Jersey’s offense in the first period. The Kings gave up three first-period goals at Buffalo on Tuesday night, and that early deficit was too much to overcome. If they allow New Jersey to get going, this game could end up becoming Tuesday night all over again. They won’t let that happen.

Leg-2 SGP Pick: Devils 1st period goals under 0.5 (+130)

Kings Goals The Kings have to emphasize defense on Thursday night, but they also have to bring their offense up to speed. New Jersey is a complete team, especially with Jack Hughes healthy and back in the lineup. The Kings were embarrassed 7-0 on Tuesday night, making this a great buy-low spot, because they will bounce back and deliver here.

Leg-3 SGP Pick: Kings goals over 2.5 (-190)
