The opening week has come and gone, and we are now officially into Week 2 of the 2023-24 NHL season. While it’s still early, it’s never too early to start predicting which teams are going to have great seasons and which ones will have a letdown this year. It’s also an important time for analysts like myself to identify teams that are going to be hidden gems as well as those that will be overvalued. So, let’s dive into this second week of NHL action.

NHL Best Bets Today: Odds, Picks and Predictions

Vancouver Canucks vs. Philadelphia Flyers Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/17

Moneyline: Canucks (-130), Flyers (+120)
Spread: Canucks -1.5 (+170), Flyers +1.5 (-225)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

Vancouver Canucks vs. Philadelphia Flyers Prediction and Pick

The Vancouver Canucks are off to a fast start this season after winning both of their first two games against the Edmonton Oilers. The Canucks, who scored a total of 12 goals in those two games, bring their red-hot offense into Philadelphia on Tuesday night. The Flyers, meanwhile, found themselves at the bottom of last season’s NHL standings and will likely find themselves near the bottom again in 2023-24. Flyers goaltender Carter Hart is definitely moving in the right direction, but even with a stronger performance from their goalie, fans can expect another rebuilding season in Philadelphia. The Canucks are expected to have Thatcher Demko in goal on Tuesday night. Demko silenced a talented Oilers offense in his first start of the season -- holding Edmonton to just one goal. He should deliver a similar performance against an inferior Flyers team on Tuesday.

The Pick: Vancouver Canucks ML (-130)

Colorado Avalanche vs. Seattle Kraken Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/17

Moneyline: Avalanche (-150), Kraken (+135)
Spread: Avalanche -1.5 (+150), Kraken +1.5 (-190)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

Colorado Avalanche vs. Seattle Kraken Prediction and Pick

The Seattle Kraken made the playoffs last season, but they haven’t looked anything like a playoff team at the start of the 2023-24 NHL season. Seattle is 0-2-1, and it’s almost starting to feel as though reaching the playoffs could be a stretch for them this year. On Tuesday night, they will try to get their first win against a Colorado Avalanche team that is clearly a Stanley Cup contender. The Avalanche will show the Kraken why that’s the case in this game. The juice here is far too low, because Colorado should win this game easily. It’s not often that I give out a puck-line play, but the Avalanche by two goals or more just seems inevitable.

The Pick: Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (+155)

Dallas Stars vs. Vegas Golden Knights Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/17

Moneyline: Stars (-110), Golden Knights (+100)
Spread: Stars -1.5 (+200), Golden Knights +1.5 (-275)
Total: Over/Under 5.5 goals

Dallas Stars vs. Vegas Golden Knights Prediction and Pick

The defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights have handled the Dallas Stars in the past, including in their most recent matchup when Vegas eliminated Dallas from the 2023 playoffs with a 6-0 win on May 29. Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger, who took the loss in that Western Conference Finals game, will be looking for revenge when the teams face off in Vegas on Tuesday night, but it’s unlikely he will get it. This Golden Knights team has yet to show a single flaw this season. Vegas enters Tuesday night’s game at 3-0, having won each of those games by three goals. The Stars will be one of the top teams in the West this season, and the Golden Knights have yet to face a team of Dallas’ caliber, so this will be a good test for Vegas, but the Knights will pass the with flying colors.

The Pick: Vegas Golden Knights ML (-110)

Carolina Hurricanes vs. San Jose Sharks Odds, Spread, Moneyline, Over/Under - NHL Betting Lines 10/17

Moneyline: Hurricanes (-300), Sharks (+260)
Spread: Hurricanes -1.5 (-130), Sharks +1.5 (+105)
Total: Over/Under 6.5 goals

Carolina Hurricanes vs. San Jose Sharks Prediction and Pick

The Carolina Hurricanes, who won the NHL’s Metropolitan Division last season, are off to a rather rough start despite their 2-1 record. They opened up the season with a 5-3 win over the Ottawa Senators but then blew a three-goal lead at Los Angeles before escaping the Kings with a 6-5 OT shootout victory. They couldn’t overcome their mistakes on Sunday night, however, and the Canes lost 6-3 at Anaheim. Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks are in the midst of what is almost certainly a rebuilding season. That’s good news for the Hurricanes, who will look to bounce back from the Ducks loss with a win on Tuesday at San Jose. Surging winger Teuvo Teravainen already has four goals through three games is someone to keep an eye on. Having Teravainen offer that much more help to talented Carolina forwards Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas could be bad news for opposing teams.

The Pick: Carolina Hurricanes ML (-300)
