Bills at Chargers Preview

The Buffalo Bills visit Los Angeles this week to face the Chargers, and although the Bills’ record might not qualify them as of the NFL’s top five teams, their recent level of play certainly does.

The Nov. 14 firing of former Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey appears to have been the right decision, as things have been running smoother offensively since Joe Brady took over Buffalo’s play-calling. It was Brady, of course, who orchestrated what was arguably the greatest offense in the history of college football when he served as offensive coordinator at LSU. He now seems to be finding his way in that role at the NFL level, too.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen is coming off two great games against two very good teams. After losing in overtime to the Philadelphia Eagles on the road on Nov. 26, the Bills came out of a bye week to take down star QB Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Dec. 10 at Arrowhead.

Just a few weeks ago, many critics had written the Bills off at 5-5, because they were facing a gauntlet of games against the Eagles, Chiefs. and Dallas Cowboys. Buffalo came out of that tough three-game stretch with two wins and very nearly ran the table against some of the league's best teams.

The Chargers, on the other hand, are headed in the opposite direction, and their season has unraveled in recent weeks. Former head coach Brandon Staley’s firing felt overdue, and it finally came on Dec. 15 after a 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, who had been held scoreless in their previous game.

In addition to Staley’s firing, the team learned that quarterback Justin Herbert will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his throwing hand. Herbert’s absence means Easton Stick, who started at Las Vegas, will be the team’s No. 1 QB for the rest of the year. Stick had never started an NFL game prior to last week.

L.A. will be in survival mode for the remainder of its season. Interim head coach Giff Smith certainly has his work cut out for him, and his first task on Saturday will be trying to get a win out of Stick and one of the league's worst defenses against a rampant Buffalo Bills team that is extremely confident right now.

Bills vs. Chargers Prediction and Pick

Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s pivot to running the football all over the Dallas Cowboys was a warning shot to the rest of the NFL. This so-called one-dimensional Bills offense is not so one-dimensional after all. Buffalo’s ability to run the football without needing quarterback Josh Allen to take off from behind the line of scrimmage certainly made a statement.

The Chargers are better against the run than against the pass. Los Angeles ranks 30th in the 32-team NFL when it comes to passing yards allowed this season – giving up 261.4 per game.

That said, we don’t know how different the Chargers’ defense might look without fired head coach Brandon Staley calling the plays. Defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley will now call the shots, and it will be interesting to see how things change under new leadership.

Buffalo should win this game, as the Bills are coming in with their confidence sky high. They were favored by 2.5 points against the Dallas Cowboys and came away 31-10 winners. I think they will cover the spread here on the road against a wounded Chargers team.

The Pick: Buffalo Bills -12.5 (-110)

Lions at Vikings Preview

The Minnesota Vikings are one of five NFC teams entering Week 16 with a 7-7 record, and each of these teams has everything to play for as far as earning berths in the playoffs’ wild-card round. The Buccaneers, Rams, Packers, Seahawks, and Saints are the five other teams tied with Minnesota right now, but only a maximum of three will reach the postseason.

The Vikings’ three-game push for a playoff spot begins at home on Sunday against the 10-4 Detroit Lions, who can clinch the NFC North title – as well as at least one home playoff game at Ford Field – by beating Minnesota. If the Lions do win the division, there’s a strong chance that they would open the playoffs by hosting longtime former Detroit QB Matt Stafford and the Rams.

After multiple weeks that saw ugly turnovers by quarterback Jared Goff, the Lions’ offense bounced back last weekend. Goff threw five touchdown passes against the Denver Broncos without committing a single turnover on the way to an emphatic 42-17 Detroit win.

Goff’s run of turnovers certainly hurt his team, but if he can keep such errors out of his game, there’s no limit to how far the Lions can go. They are competitive in the NFC and have just as many play-makers at this point in the season as anyone else in the conference.

Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta caught three of Goff’s five TD passes against Denver and continues to play like one of the NFL’s top five players at his position. He has proven to be the perfect complement to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Lions have cashed in on outstanding debut seasons from both LaPorta and rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs in developing one of the most balanced offenses in the NFL.

Detroit’s opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, also clearly have weapons on offense, but the question is whether or not this team has a quarterback who can get it to the postseason. Losing Kirk Cousins for the year was devastating both for the Vikings and for the league. Minnesota went with Josh Dobbs at QB for the first few games after Cousins got hurt, but head coach Kevin O’Connell has since turned to veteran Nick Mullens as his starter down the stretch.

Vikings rookie wideout Jordan Addison had a big day in last Sunday’s overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals -- catching six passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. However, Mullens threw two picks, and the Vikings lost by three points on the road. The turnover margin will be crucial again when Minnesota is playing at home against the Lions.

Lions vs. Vikings Prediction and Pick

Minnesota will need its defense, led by coordinator Brian Flores, to step up in a major way on Sunday. While the Vikings have been great on multiple occasions this season, the Cincinnati Bengals were able to exploit them last weekend when Bengals quarterback Jake Browning threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns with only one turnover.

If the Vikings can force a turnover or two out of Detroit QB Jared Goff, they might have a shot on Sunday. However, if Goff plays a clean game, the Lions should win this one comfortably.

I’ll take Detroit to cover here. I expect the Lions to have the more efficient offense against a Vikings team whose season has unfortunately been hobbled by an injury to its No. 1 quarterback.

The Pick: Detroit Lions -3 (-105)

Cowboys at Dolphins Preview

Let the festivities begin a little early this year with an absolute treat of a game for all football fans on Christmas Eve. There are so many storylines to this one that it's hard to know where to begin, but both teams will have a lot on the line when they take the field Sunday.

For the Cowboys, rebounding from a devastating loss to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday afternoon will be critical. Fortunately for them, the Philadelphia Eagles also lost their most recent game, keeping both teams atop the NFC East at 10-4 with three games to go. Philly will play the Giants twice with a game against Arizona in between, so the Eagles clearly have the easier schedule. Dallas’ game at Miami will be followed by a Saturday night home game against Detroit and a trip to Washington to face the Commanders on the final day of the regular season.

A win here over Miami would keep the Cowboys in the driver’s seat for the division title and an opportunity to open the NFC playoffs at home in early 2024. That home-field advantage will be important because the NFC postseason field will be extremely competitive. The Cowboys will want to quickly forget the 31-10 drubbing they suffered last weekend at Buffalo, when the Bills managed to throw Dallas off its rhythm and disrupt quarterback Dak Prescott all afternoon.

Miami already scored a redemption victory last weekend after a brutal performance against the Tennessee Titans the previous Monday night. Injuries have hit the Dolphins hard, but they beat themselves by allowing Tennessee to muster a late fourth-quarter comeback that never should have happened.

Coming off that loss, last Sunday’s home game against the New York Jets was all about whether the Dolphins could bounce back and whether Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa could perform well without injured Tyreek Hill. The Dolphins answered the bell on both counts, smashing the Jets 30-0.

Tagovailoa completed 21 of 24 passes for 224 yards -- finding Jaylen Waddle for 142 of those yards as well as a touchdown. Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb had three sacks on defense, contributing to the team's total of six, and Miami held the Jets to just 103 yards of total offense.

If they can be as disruptive against Dallas as they were against the Jets -- and as the Bills were against the Cowboys last week – the Dolphins might win this one. However, they will also have to work their way past a typically stubborn Dallas defense.

The playoff implications here are just as important for Miami, which is two games ahead of the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East with three games left on the schedule. The Dolphins can’t afford to drop a game in either of their next two and allow the Bills to catch up. If that happens, then the division title would have to be decided by a Dolphins-Bills showdown in the last game of the regular season at Miami.

Cowboys vs. Dolphins Prediction and Pick

There are several key matchups to focus on in this one. How will both offensive lines hold up against the premium pass rush of Miami’s Bradley Chubb, Christian Wilkins and Zach Seiler on one side, and Dallas’ Micah Parsons, Dorance Armstrong and Co. on the other?

There is also the matchup between Dallas wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and Miami cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who has locked down half of the field in seven games since coming back from offseason knee surgery. If Ramsey is able to nullify Lamb, then the Cowboys’ options on offense will be limited, and QB Dak Prescott will be forced off of his first read and into incoming pressure.

Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill is expected to return for this game, having been rested against the Jets, and Miami will look to move the football against the Cowboys just as the Bills did last weekend. Buffalo’s running game was key in that win, so expect a heavy dose of Miami’s Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane on the ground.

The spread is only 1.5 points in favor of the home team. Rather than try to call this one either way, I’ll just back the over. These are the NFL’s two most effective scoring offenses this season when all their skill-position players are on the field.

The Pick: Over 49.5 Points (-110)

Raiders at Chiefs Preview

The Kansas City Chiefs’ second game of the season against their AFC division rival Las Vegas Raiders will kick off at Arrowhead Stadium during lunchtime on Christmas Day. The Chiefs won the first meeting 31-17 and are now 9-5 on the season, while the Raiders sit at 6-8 and are 3-3 since interim head coach Antonio Pierce took control of the team.

This will be a big game for Pierce, who could make a statement against a Super Bowl-contending division rival. A win would certainly boost his chance to earn the Raiders’ permanent head coaching job, but it will be an uphill battle against a Chiefs team favored by 10 points.

Raiders rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell had the best game of his professional career last Thursday night -- throwing four touchdown passes in Las Vegas’ 63-21 slaughter of the Los Angeles Chargers. That game led to former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley’s firing.

O’Connell is also auditioning for a full-time job and the chance to be the Raiders’ starter next season. That’s a real possibility if he continues to perform well.

The Raiders have been a little hit-and-miss in recent weeks, going from zero points against the Vikings to 63 against the Chargers. That’s quite the swing, and the version of their offense that shows up against the Chiefs on Christmas will be a major factor in this game.

Kansas City is 9-4, but the Chiefs’ struggles on offense have continued, although they were masked by a 27-17 win over the New England Patriots last Sunday. Kansas City wide receiver Kadarius Toney bobbled yet another pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, which led to another interception and a frustrated rant by Mahomes on the sideline. The Chiefs QB again had two interceptions in the game, and 2023 is proving to be his worst year for protecting the football. However, he was still able to throw for 305 yards and two TDs, and the Chiefs eventually buried the stumbling Patriots.

A win here against the Raiders would put the Chiefs at least two games ahead of Denver in the AFC West. It would also keep them among the top three teams in the AFC playoff picture.

Raiders vs Chiefs Prediction and Pick

While the Chiefs are favored in this game and should come away with the win, this is still a division game against a very familiar opponent. I won’t be underestimating the Raiders, who have proven that they can move the football well with a very accurate and well-prepared Aidan O’Connell at quarterback. He might be a rookie, but he doesn’t play like one, as there is great composure and calmness to his game.

The Chiefs are 0-3 against the spread over their last three games, having lost to both Green Bay and Buffalo. I think they will win here, but I don’t like the 10-point margin at all. This is a Las Vegas team that just beat the Chargers 63-21, so I’ll take the Raiders with the points.

The Pick: Las Vegas Raiders +10.5 (-110)
