When is the first NFL preseason game?

The first NFL preseason game of 2022 will take place on Thursday August 4, when the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders meet in the annual Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio.

The annual exhibition game is always held on the weekend of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s induction ceremonies and takes place at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, which is adjacent to the Hall of Fame building.

The 2022 matchup between the Jags and Raiders kicks off at 8pm ET on August 4, with the rest of preseason beginning a week later.

When does the NFL preseason start and end?

The 2022 NFL preseason begins on August 4, and ends on Sunday August 28, with the start of the regular season then following on September 9.

How many games does each team play in preseason?

This is the second year of a shortened NFL preseason, with the new 17-game regular season meaning each team will play just three preseason games.

The only exceptions are the Jaguars and Raiders, who are playing in the annual Hall of Fame game, and will therefore have four games each.

NFL Preseason Week 1

The first week of the 2022 NFL preseason kicks off with the Hall of Fame game between Jacksonville and Las Vegas, with No. 1 pick Travon Walker set to make his Jaguars debut.

Other highlights include the Green Bay Packers visiting the San Francisco 49ers, an all-Florida matchup between the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and an all-LA clash between the Rams and Chargers.

Week 1 ends with a second preseason appearance for the Raiders as they travel to Minnesota to take on the Vikings, meaning NFL fans should get the chance to see Davante Adams in his new uniform at some point in the first week of action.

How to watch NFL preseason games

During each week of preseason there will be several games that are nationally televised.

NBC, ESPN, FOX, Prime Video and CBS all have at least one national broadcast each over the course of the three weeks, while NFL Network will be showing 22 live preseason games.

The new subscription service NFL+, which is replacing NFL Game Pass in the US, offers all live out-of-market preseason games, while local networks will televise the rest.
