Stanford (1-4, 1-1 Away) vs Colorado (4-2, 2-1 Home)
Date: Friday, October 13th, 2023
Time: 10:00 pm Eastern Time
Venue: Folsom Field - Boulder, Colorado
TV Channel: ESPN
Live Stream: fuboTV

Colorado return to Folsom Field following their closely contested win at Arizona State to host a 1-4 Stanford program at home.

Stanford feels like a step down in competition for Colorado who have faced some of the better offensive programs in college football so far this season. Games against USC, Oregon and even TCU have hardened this Colorado outfit, which does struggle defensively at times but doesn’t shy away from a shootout.

Stanford at Colorado Preview

Let’s start off here with Stanford. There’s no denying that the offense has struggled at times so far this season. They average just 19 points per game as an offense and have made a quarterback switch already this season.

Starter Ashton Daniels didn’t manage to get it going through the first four weeks, throwing just three touchdowns. After taking a big hit and exiting the game in Week 4 the Cardinal handed the starting role to redshirt freshman transfer Justin Lamson, who came over from Syracuse in the summer.

Lamson got the start against Oregon, throwing 20 passes, 11 completions and 106 yards against the Ducks defense. While he was the starter on the day, Daniels still got a few reps, and the situation in general looks a little messy with a big road game coming up this Friday night.

Now coming back off the bye week, Daniels is still the presumed starter if he’s healthy and available to play. I would assume that he’ll be back in the lineup, but expect to see a little of Justin Lamson too, who has some dynamic qualities that will keep the Buffaloes defense on their toes.

Colorado’s defense certainly has its weaknesses. They’ve allowed 40+ points three times this year against strong competition, leading to the blowout loss against Oregon and two shootouts against both TCU and USC. Stanford's offense is not at the same standard as those teams, and the Buffaloes should expect to have a slightly better day defensively.

If Colorado is able to hold Stanford to less than 21 points, the rest is up to Shedeur Sanders and the offense.

Stanford is allowing an average of 312.5 passing yards per game. That’s the sixth worst total in the country, and we haven’t seen many signs of the defense slowing down these vertical passing attacks so far this year.

While not yet confirmed, there’s a chance that Travis Hunter could be available for Friday night's game, having been back at practice this week following the hit that landed him in the hospital back in Week 3 against Colorado State.

Colorado has a wealth of talent available at wide receiver and in more recent weeks it's been Omarion Miller jumping off the stat sheet.

Miller is a freshman but had his breakout game against USC, totaling seven catches for 196 yards and a touchdown. He adds yet another pass catching option to an offense that already features Xavier Weaver, Jimmy Horn Jr. and tight end Michael Harrison. And if Travis Hunter is back it could be a major day for the offense against this Cardinal defense.

Shedeur Sanders has been putting up major numbers so far this season, with at least 340 passing yards in four of his six starts, and of course the 510 yard, four touchdown day in the season opener against TCU.

This feels like one of those games in which Sanders puts up some serious numbers, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come out of this one on the north side of 350 passing yards and three touchdowns under the Friday Night lights.

Stanford vs Colorado Predictions and Pick

Colorado home games come with one of the strongest atmospheres in college football right now, with so much hype following Prime Time and his program in one of the most popular stories in the game.

Celebrities are flocking to Folsom Field to catch a glimpse, and the Buffs certainly get a boost from the crowd selling out the stadium week after week. The comeback effort against USC made it a thrilling finish, and while Colorado fell short, they showed what they’re capable of with a little momentum in front of a packed house.

I’m picking Colorado to win here and cover the spread. The defense in theory should have a better performance this week, and the offense could really put Stanford’s secondary to work.

The Pick: Colorado -10.5 (-125)

The over/under is a tough line to work with, but Stanford is allowing almost 36 points per game, and 40 on the road.

While Colorado might have a better day defensively, we know they’re capable of giving up some points, and I’m going to favor the over here in a fun one on Friday night.
