The Buckeyes will go on the road against Purdue in a must win game before meeting Penn State in Week 8. Kyle McCord seems to be settling in nicely and the offense is clicking as the season goes on, so how do they match up against a Purdue side that has struggled so far in 2023?

Ohio State at Purdue Preview

The Buckeyes came off their bye week to face Maryland in Week 6, and Kyle McCord had arguably his best game since taking over as the team's starter.

The Terrapins have a strong defense, and a defense that is clearly on the way up, but McCord looked comfortable and cleared 300 passing yards for the second time so far this year. His 320 passing yards and two touchdowns marked a new career high in yardage for the third-year quarterback, who hit Marvin Harrison Jr for eight catches, 163 yards and a touchdown on the day.

Harrison’s big day marked his third 100+ yard receiving day in five games this season, and his eight catches meant a new season high following the seven he caught against Youngstown State back in Week 2.

One of the key questions going into this weekend is the status of running back TreVeyon Henderson, who is trending towards playing. Head coach Ryan Day said on Thursday that he expects Henderson to play after missing the Maryland game last weekend.

The Buckeyes running back is pivotal for the offense as the most experienced back on the roster and the biggest difference maker OSU has out of the backfield. While Kyle McCord has played well this year and looks progressively more comfortable as his tenure gets underway, the Buckeyes will be hoping to continue to develop the run game and further support the offense on the ground.

Henderson had his biggest game of the season against Notre Dame with 104 rushing yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, helping the Buckeyes claim a win in a tight game against another ranked opponent.

While the star back might return this weekend, it’ll be interesting to see how much work he gets in a game Ohio State is expected to win comfortably. When you look at the schedule going forward, with an unbeaten Penn State next week and Wisconsin the week after, Day is going to want his starting running back to be at full fitness going into those games.

While the offense continues to trend in the right direction, the Buckeyes defense is playing at a solid clip this season too. Last year they were good under Jim Knowles in his first season in charge, and this year the unit looks even more comfortable across the board.

The Buckeyes rank in the top ten for passing yards allowed so far this season, and they’re allowing just 108 rushing yards per game too, good for 26th in the nation.

Purdue doesn't match up well in this one, and you have to feel for them with a tough out of conference schedule in 2023. Their two wins came in Week 1 against Virginia Tech and in Week 5 with a beatdown on Illinois, but now face the Buckeyes this weekend and Michigan in early November.

Quarterback Hudson Card, the former Texas transfer, has been a mixed bag so far this year. He played well against both Syracuse and Illinois, but struggled in both the Wisconsin and Iowa games.

To be fair to him, he was running for his life against Iowa, who had six sacks on the day as the Boilermakers put up just 14 points in the 20-14 loss. That said, Card’s struggles are evident, and the offense has been very hit and miss from week to week.

Taking care of the football has been an issue for Purdue this year, with Card putting the ball on the ground eight times and running back Devin Mockobee adding another six fumbles to that total. Those numbers aren’t going to help you win football games, especially with the Buckeyes in town.

The Purdue defense has had its moments, and they’ve kept the team in games against Iowa and Virginia Tech, but the third down completion percentage is an issue. The defense has allowed over six third down conversions per game as they’re struggling to get off the field.

With the offense facing struggles of their own, they could do with an extra possession or two, and that means this Purdue defense needs to tighten up against a pretty explosive Buckeyes unit. I’m not sure that happens this week.

Ohio State vs Purdue Predictions and Pick

This is a comfortable win for Ohio State in my mind. The Buckeyes are growing stronger week after week and Kyle McCord looks progressively more comfortable running the offense.

His performance against Maryland, knowing he had to come up clutch with his starting running back sidelined, caught my attention. That’s a great day against the Maryland defense, and if he plays like that against Purdue the Buckeyes should come out with a relatively easy win.

The spread is 19 points, and I’m not sure I can see Purdue scoring more than 14 here against this Buckeyes defense.

Ohio State should be able to put up 40, even if they limit reps for TreVeyon Henderson.

The Pick: Ohio State -19 (-110)

If the Buckeyes can put up 40, which should happen as Purdue falls behind and has to force throws to chase the game, then the over should cash too.

The only way this one comes in under is if Purdue is somehow able to hold the Buckeyes to 28 points or less. That’s a tough ask, even though they’ve had a couple of decent performances against lesser opponents.

Purdue doesn't rank well in yardage allowed against either the run or the pass, and that third down conversion rate is a killer
