Head coach Deion Sanders and his Colorado Buffaloes are set to host the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday night in Boulder. The Buffs’ high-flying start to the season has hit a few bumps in the road, as Sanders’ team has won only one of its last five games. A struggling offensive line and porous defense have been the main causes of the downfall, which is why the upcoming game against the 6-2 Beavers is a particularly dangerous matchup for Sanders’ team.

Oregon State had been a high-scoring team up until last week’s disappointing loss at Arizona. The Beavers will be looking to get back on track in their second straight road game on Saturday night.

Oregon State at Colorado Preview

This Week 10 matchup promises to be a battle between two good offenses. Despite their recent slide, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his Buffaloes playmakers have been entertaining all season long, and the Beavers have also been racking up a lot of points. The Oregon State offense doesn’t stand out enough to capture the attention given to some other Pac-12 teams, but it has certainly been putting together some impressive performances.

The Beavers average 33.7 points per game, which is the nation’s 20th-best offensive output. They thrive off their excellent running game, led by one of the best offensive lines in college football. The biggest beneficiary of his offensive linemen is sophomore running back Damien Martinez. He averages an incredible 6.4 yards per carry, which has helped him rush for 763 yards and three touchdowns this year. It has been a brilliant season for Martinez, and he must like his chances Saturday against a Colorado defense ranked 91st in the country when it comes to stopping the run. If the Buffaloes let Martinez run loose this weekend, they will find it very hard to get the Beavers’ offense off the field.

Martinez is Oregon State’s offensive focal point, but quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has played his part as well. His low completion rate of 59.2 percent reflects the Beavers’ reliance on their star running back, but Uiagalelei has thrown nine touchdown passes in his last three games and has completed at least one TD pass in every game this year. He benefits from the ground game -- making the most of loaded boxes with some explosive play-action passes. Indeed, Oregon State’s QB averages an impressive 15 yards per completion, which is the sixth-highest number in college football. There’s no question that Colorado’s secondary will need to be prepared for the deep shot, because it will be coming.

Wide receivers Silas Bolden and Anthony Gould have reaped the rewards of Oregon State’s deep passing game. Both players have topped 500 yards, and they have combined for six touchdowns. The top-scoring receiver, however, is tight end Jack Velling, who already has eight touchdowns this year. He torched Colorado for a 60-yard TD reception when these teams met in 2022.

That last game between the teams ended with the Beavers routing the Buffaloes 42-9 at home. This year’s Buffaloes surely have enough offense to put up a greater fight, and Shedeur Sanders certainly brings a spark that was not available to his team last year. Sanders’ ability to connect with his speedy receivers has already produced 2,637 passing yards and 22 touchdowns in 2023, which should give the Beavers some food for thought.

The key to slowing down Sanders is rather obvious, because the Buffaloes’ offensive line has been abysmal this year. No team has allowed more quarterback sacks than Colorado, which gave up seven in last Saturday’s loss at UCLA. Opponents are averaging 5.3 sacks per game against the Buffs, which makes scoring points that much harder for the Sanders-led offense. Oregon State recognizes that the secret to success against Colorado is putting the Buffaloes’ offensive line -- and Sanders -- under as much pressure as possible. If the Beavers believe they can repeat what UCLA did last week, they should feel confident about leaving Colorado with a win on Saturday.

Even in its losses, Colorado has still managed to score a lot. The Buffaloes average 32.1 points per game, with most of the work coming from their talented wide-receiver corps. Xavier Weaver leads that group with 717 yards and four touchdowns this year. Jimmy Horn Jr. and two-way star Travis Hunter are also enjoying good seasons, as they both create matchup nightmares all over the field. If Sanders can remain on his feet, the Buffaloes will put up points.

Oregon State vs. Colorado Prediction and Pick

If last year’s 42-9 win by Oregon State is anything to go by, then Colorado has a lot of work to do in this game. Fortunately for the Buffaloes, their team is completely different from a year ago, and its offense poses a much greater threat. I think Oregon State’s rushing attack should help it control the game and get the win, but I back Buffs QB Shedeur Sanders and his speedy receivers to put up some points of their own.

A 13.5-point spread is generous, and I will take Colorado to cover at home.

The Pick: Colorado Buffaloes + 13.5 (-110)

It feels as if this game will be all about offense. Oregon State should have no problem moving the ball against Colorado, which ranks 127th in the nation for yards conceded to opponents. The Buffaloes are giving up an average of 475 yards per game, and Oregon State’s elite rushers should have no problem marching up the field. When Colorado inevitably overcommits to the run, the Beavers will pose a great threat in the play-action passing game. I expect Oregon State’s receivers to get the better of their opponents in the secondary whenever their numbers are called.

Colorado should also post a high number of points. Shedeur Sanders is a special quarterback and, even though he will spend a fair amount of time either on his backside or evading the pass rush, I still believe that the Buffaloes have the needed playmakers on offense to sustain some good drives of their own. Look for the offenses to come out on top in this game as the teams storm past the 62.5 over/under total

The Pick: Oregon State vs Colorado Over 61.5 (-110)
