Arizona State vs. Utah Preview

Arizona State hoped to use the 2023 season to begin rebuilding a winning culture. While 33-year-old rookie head coach Kenny Dillingham certainly has his work cut out for him, there are already some things the Sun Devils can feel very good about this year.

Perhaps the most important task for this year’s Sun Devils was to achieve a high level of defensive play, led by defensive coordinator Brian Ward. The experienced coach took over the defense as a member of Dillingham’s staff, and the group he oversees already ranks in the nation’s top 20 when it comes to stopping the run.

Ward has received high praise from both ASU beat writers and the team’s fan base for his great game plans and aggressive defense. Those improvements aren’t yet translating into the win column, but they could be the groundwork for a winning team in years to come. The Sun Devils’ defensive coordinator has already earned a contract extension, and his reputation could improve even more with a good performance at Utah this weekend.

This is no easy matchup for the Sun Devils, who are tied with Stanford for last place in the Pac-12. Utah, on the other hand, is tied for fourth at 6-2. If the Utes can win all four of their remaining games, they could be in the mix for the conference title game.

The Utes have beaten nationally-ranked opponents in both UCLA and USC, albeit in very different types of games. However, this team has also crumbled against talented opposition on a couple of occasions.

Utah lost to Oregon State on Sept. 29, managing only seven points that day. The Utes struggled again last week in a tough matchup against Oregon. The Ducks beat the Utes in just about every category, and Utah’s offense once again disappeared in scoring just six points against a good team.

In fairness to Utah, the team has been without starting quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Brant Kuithe, who both have yet to play this year due to knee injuries suffered last season.

Without these two offensive stars, the Utes’ passing game has been a constant concern, which tends to show itself when Utah faces top-tier opponents. No Utah player has reached 300 receiving yards this year, and this banged-up team has also lost two running backs and receiver Mycah Pittman to season-ending injuries.

This has been a tough year for the Utes program, so posting a 6-2 record despite all that adversity has been a pretty impressive feat.

The Utes have a solid defense, which ranks inside the nation’s top 30 in terms of fewest total yards allowed per game. Utah also ranks 10th in fewest rushing yards allowed, giving up less than 100 per game.

On Saturday, that defense is going to be a big problem for Arizona State’s struggling offense, which has been turning the ball over far more than it would like this season.

The Sun Devils are now on their third starting quarterback in 2023, having gone back to junior Trenton Bourguet, who had started the second half of the 2022 season in place of Emory Jones.

Arizona State began the season with promising freshman Jaden Rashada at quarterback. He made some really nice throws in the first two games of the season before being ruled out with an injury against Fresno State. Sophomore Jacob Conover started in his place, but ASU struggled to move the football in a 29-0 loss that saw Conover complete only six of 16 passing attempts for 89 yards and two interceptions.

After that Sept. 16 loss to Fresno State, the Sun Devils learned that Rashada would miss four to six weeks recovering from his undisclosed injury. He has yet to return to the lineup due this injury issue that has apparently been a problem since high school. If he were healthy, one would have to imagine that Rashada, an impressive recruit, would be the ASU starter. Without him, however, the offense has certainly stalled.

Arizona State vs. Utah Predictions and Picks

Neither of these teams is consistent on offense, although both boast impressive defenses.

This isn’t shaping up to be a pretty game or one that features a lot of points, so the under is certainly tempting.

Arizona State has only cashed two overs this season, and both came in home games when the Sun Devils’ offense managed to put up at least 28 points. Utah has done the same, and I don’t see why this weekend's game would be any different for either team.

I’ll gladly take the under, even though it’s a low total for a college game.

The Pick: Under 42.5 Points (-110)

I expect this to be a tough, gritty defensive game, and I don’t see a path for ASU to win it on the road. The Sun Devils are 0-2 in road games this season, and Utah has only lost one home game, which happened last week against a high-flying Oregon team ranked in the AP top 10.

I think Utah wins without too much strain on Saturday, but I do like the +11 spread for Arizona State. Despite their losses to good football teams, the Sun Devils haven’t lost against the spread in any of their last four games

ASU covered the spread against USC, Cal, and Washington, plus a push against Colorado, so I have them maintaining that pace against Utah.

Arizona State might lose, but the Sun Devils won’t get blown out.

The Pick: Arizona State +11 (-110)
