A huge clash between two undefeated college teams is set for this Saturday when the Ohio State Buckeyes visit the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Both teams have enjoyed comfortable starts to their seasons and will see this matchup as their first true test. For Ohio State, it’s a must-win game that could have playoff implications later on in the season. For Notre Dame, it’s a great opportunity to get an elusive victory against a team they have not beaten since 1936.

Ohio State at Notre Dame Preview

Both teams are coming into this game with undefeated records, but their stories have been rather different. Ohio State is adjusting to life with new starting quarterback Kyle McCord, and while the Buckeyes did manage to put up more than 60 points in their last game against Western Kentucky, they were hoping for more than the 35 they scored in their previous win over Youngstown State.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, is enjoying one of the best season starts in school history. New quarterback Sam Hartman, a transfer from Wake Forest, has shown his experience by putting in some elite performances. In each of Hartman’s four starts so far, the Irish have scored at least 40 points. His debut outing against Navy featured a 251-yard, four-touchdown performance that matched team records and set the tone for Notre Dame’s dominant start to the season. The Irish must be excited that they finally have excellence at the most important position in the game.

Notre Dame has another great strength, because Hartman lines up alongside stud running back Audric Estime, whose 8.3 yards per carry this season are creating chaos for opposing defenses. Estime will be a key player on Saturday, when he goes up against a stout Buckeyes defense that has only allowed 83 rushing yards per game. The Buckeyes haven't come across a running back like Estime yet, but Estime hasn’t had to face a defensive line like Ohio State’s. It will be fascinating see how he does, and his performance could be the key to this game.

When Ohio State’s offense is on the field, all eyes will be on wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. As the son of a Hall of Fame receiver, Harrison Jr. was always going to be under the spotlight, but it certainly doesn’t seem like that pressure has bothered him. After a strong 2022 season, Harrison has picked up right where he left off -- averaging 100 receiving yards and a touchdown through his team’s first three games. Notre Dame knows that keeping Harrison quiet is critical to its success, and the Irish might just have the defensive personnel to do that. Their athletic defensive unit is highlighted by Benjamin Morrison, who might be one of the best corners in college football. His showdown with Ohio State’s star receiver should be box-office entertainment.

As is often the case in football, this game will likely come down to how well the two quarterbacks perform. Hartman and McCord are at very different stages of their career, but it’s a huge weekend for both of them. McCord will be going up against the best defense he has ever faced, and Hartman will have to deal with the pressure of trying to deliver Notre Dame’s first win over Ohio State in nearly a century. Can he continue his impressive start to the season and topple a college football juggernaut in one of the biggest games of his career?

Ohio State vs Notre Dame Prediction & Picks

It has been a while since these two teams had the stage set for such an exciting matchup. The game has been dominated by the Buckeyes in recent years with Ohio State winning all five meetings since 1995. The most recent showdown came a year ago, when the Buckeyes won 21-10 at home. The game was a closely fought affair, and a late touchdown secured the win for Ohio State.

We could see a slightly different result this time. Unlike last year, Notre Dame comes into the game with the edge at quarterback and the more impressive overall season so far. Sam Hartman, now in his sixth college season, seems to have taken his game to the next level and will rely on his experience to lead the Irish past Kyle McCord and the Buckeyes.

The Pick: Notre Dame (+125)

The two most explosive offensive players heading into this game are Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. and Notre Dame’s Audric Estime. Both have tough challenges ahead of them this weekend -- with the Buckeyes’ stout defense looking to slow down Estime, and Benjamin Morrison tasked with keeping an eye on Harrison.

Both defenses match up nicely in terms of what the opposing offenses like to do, so I think the under is a smart bet this week.
