Week 4 of the college football season will see the Arkansas Razorbacks visit Tiger Stadium to face a surging LSU team that is fresh off a very polished performance against Mississippi State. While the Tigers were rolling last weekend, Arkansas suffered a disappointing loss to BYU -- a game in which the Razorbacks’ offensive line made life difficult for quarterback KJ Jefferson. Going into LSU’s backyard is never easy, and the Arkansas offensive linemen will have their work cut out for them against one of the better defensive lines in college football. Can they prevent this game from getting ugly and keep the Razorbacks in it?

Arkansas at LSU Preview

LSU’s 2023 season got off to a messy start in a 21-point loss to Florida State. The Tigers were favored going into that game, and they emerged from it with several questions to answer. Thankfully, a solid two-game stretch -- which has seen LSU blow away its opponents by a combined 89-point margin – has put the team back on track.

Tigers fans were no doubt relieved to see quarterback Jayden Daniels in top form over the past two weeks, as he threw for seven touchdowns and ran for two more in those impressive victories. Daniels proved his passing ability with an efficient 269-yard, five-TD performance against Grambling State before reminding everyone of his running ability by rushing for 64 yards and two TDs against Mississippi State.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers has rewarded LSU fans who were hoping to see him take a leap forward this year, as he has already matched his total of three touchdowns from 2022. Last week’s 41-14 rout of Mississippi State was a joy to watch, as Nabers blew his opposition away with 13 catches for 239 yards and two TDs. It might have been just the start of a special season for the young receiver, who is developing a fantastic connection with Daniels.

LSU can only hope this duo’s hot start to the season continues, because the Tigers have two tough SEC matchups ahead of them. This weekend’s game against Arkansas won’t be as easy as the spread suggests, and Nabers will need to be a key player. The Razorbacks have a talented defensive line, led by Landon Jackson, and are only giving up 1.7 yards per carry so far this season. Look for LSU to utilize its explosive passing attack to grab the lead in this game.

For the Razorbacks, the performance of their offensive line will be crucial in determining the outcome of this game. The O-line has been a problem for Arkansas so far this season, making life difficult for both the passing and rushing game. In last week’s loss to BYU, the Razorbacks were a miserable 2-for-13 on third-down conversions, which can’t be the case if this team plans to succeed. Arkansas needs itsr offensive linemen to give quarterback KJ Jefferson enough time in the pocket to keep driving his team downfield.

In addition to taking pressure of Jefferson, the Razorbacks will need to get their running game going. To beat LSU, Arkansas has to do a better job controlling possession time, which will result from running the ball effectively and converting on third downs. Jefferson can use his legs to impact the game, since he has averaged 4.5 and 4.1 yards-per-carry respectively in the last two seasons. His poor 2.6 yards-per-carry this year is further proof of the damage this offensive line is doing to Arkansas’ game plan.

The final key on Saturday for Arkansas -- if the Razorbacks hope to pull off a surprise victory -- will be the team’s overall discipline. The Razorbacks racked up 14 penalties for 125 yards in their 38-31 loss to BYU. They also committed two turnovers in handing the game to their opposition. Tiger Stadium is going to be loud and hostile on Saturday, so the Arkansas players will need to keep their wits about them if they are to have a chance.

On the plus side, despite all the penalties and turnovers, Arkansas lost to BYU by only one touchdown and outgained the Cougars 424-281 in terms of total yards. If the offensive line improves and the defense can prevent the big plays, there is every chance for the Razorbacks to cause an upset.

Arkansas vs LSU Prediction & Picks

LSU found something special last week against Mississippi State and performed like one of the best teams in college football. The Tigers will come into this game motivated to secure another victory and continue building momentum before next week’s showdown with Ole Miss. The Razorbacks' run defense will make life hard for the Tigers, but quarterback Jayden Daniels can help out with both his own rushing ability and a newfound chemistry with receiver Malik Nabers. All of that might be too much for the Razorbacks to handle.

The Pick: Point Spread: LSU -16.5 (-130)

LSU’s offense looks like the real deal this season, and I expect them to continue rolling against a good Razorbacks defense. Jayden Daniels has already thrown for nearly 1,000 yards through the season’s first three weeks. He also has nine passing touchdowns and two rushing TDs. With Daniels leading the way in 2023, the Tigers are averaging 45.7 points per game and could easily come close to that number in this Week 4 matchup with Arkansas.

The Razorback will have their hands full with LSU's strong defense, but I back them to add on a couple of scores of their own and help us beat the over.
