We’re about to find out if a bye week helped the Colorado Buffaloes pick themselves up after their brutal collapse two weeks ago vs. Stanford. In that game, the Buffs’ 29-0 halftime lead turned into a humiliating 46-43 double-OT loss for head coach Deion Sanders (better known as “Coach Prime”). A potent UCLA defense could cause Colorado even more pain this week. It’s a fascinating matchup for sure to have the Bruins defense going up against the Buffaloes’ explosive offense. Who will come out on top in this Week 9 Pac-12 clash?

Colorado at UCLA Preview

The Colorado Buffaloes' offense continued to motor along against Stanford in Week 7, registering its fourth game with more than 40 points just ahead of its bye week. The real issue for Colorado is on the defensive side of the ball, where the Buffaloes are allowing opponents 4.4 yards per carry on the ground and a 66 percent completion rate through the air. In that stat alone, Colorado’s passing defense ranks just 120th in the nation.

An inability to stop opposing quarterbacks has resulted in the Buffaloes conceding at least 35 points in four of their past five games. Colorado allows opponents to move the ball with ease. This week’s matchup at UCLA is an interesting one, because the Bruins had been looking disjointed on offense until they hammered Stanford 42-7 last week.

After committing too many turnovers prior to the Stanford game, the Bruins benched true freshman quarterback Dante Moore in favor of junior Ethan Garbers, who threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns against the Cardinal. It is still up in the air as to who will get the start this week. Garbers’ ceiling is not as high as Moore’s, but he provides a stability that his team just can’t get from a true freshman – at least not yet.

Regardless of who lines up under center, the Bruins will likely look to their running backs to help them control this game. Carson Steele and TJ Harden are both averaging more than five yards per carry, and they have combined for 11 touchdowns. They both must like their chances against this Colorado defense, and the Bruins can feed this talented running-back duo to keep talented Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and the Buffaloes offense off the field.

When Colorado’s offense does take the field, all eyes will be on Sanders, who has already thrown for 2,420 yards and 21 touchdowns this season with a 72.3 percent completion rate. These numbers are even more special when one considers the state of his offensive line, which has “helped” Sanders become the most-sacked quarterback in college football this season (34 sacks and counting).

That sacks total could go much higher this week, because Colorado is about to face one of the best defensive lines in the country. Bruins edge rusher Laiatu Latu, who should go early in the first round of the next NFL Draft, headlines a very talented pass rush that could make life incredibly difficult for Sanders. This is a nightmare matchup for the Buffaloes’ struggling offensive line, and a quick-passing game could be the only way to keep Sanders on his feet.

The running game will also be important for Colorado, but it will be more tough sledding against a Bruins defense that is only giving up 2.2 yards per carry. If the Buffs’ running backs can navigate through the crowded line of scrimmage, they will have to contend with linebacker Darius Muasau, who is enjoying another strong season and is coming off a fantastic game against Stanford. Colorado running backs Anthony Hankerson and Dylan Edwards will hope to find some running room and create balance for the Sanders-led offense, but it won’t be easy.

Colorado vs. UCLA Prediction and Pick

The Colorado Buffaloes' bye week came at a good time, allowing this team to reset after its turbulent, high-profile start to the season that culminated with a brutal loss to the Stanford Cardinal. Unfortunately, UCLA is about as bad a matchup as possible for Colorado. The Bruins boast one of the best defensive lines in the country, and those linemen are surely fired up about their chance to dominate a woeful Buffaloes offensive line. Since Colorado’s defense is also a bit of a pushover, I could see the Bruins pulling away from Colorado here. I will be taking them to cover.

The Pick: UCLA Bruins -17 (-110)

I like the UCLA Bruins defense to dominate Colorado's offensive line, but there are enough explosive playmakers on the Buffaloes to help us get over the 62.5 points total. Breakaway plays from two-way player Travis Hunter and wide receiver Xavier Weaver are always in the cards, and some helpful garbage-time points could also come in handy here. Colorado’s defense hasn’t been able to stop anyone this season, and I don’t see that changing this week. I expect UCLA to pull away from Colorado, despite the Bruins’ questions at quarterback, and put up a good total here.

The Pick: Colorado Buffaloes vs. UCLA Bruins Under 62.5 (-115)
