Ohio State landed its biggest win of the season last week when it defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions for a vital conference victory. It has been a fantastic start to the season for the 2023 Buckeyes, who head into Week 9 as heavy favorites against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Badgers fought hard for a well-earned victory last week against Illinois, but can they hold their own against this strong Ohio State team?

Ohio State at Wisconsin Preview

With playoff hopes at stake, the Ohio State Buckeyes delivered a pristine performance in beating Penn State last weekend. The victory preserved OSU’s unbeaten record as the Buckeyes continue to make the case that they are the kings of this year’s Big Ten. They got their big win on the strength of a dominant defensive performance that saw Ohio State completely suffocate the Nittany Lions’ offense. Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was shut down to the tune of just 18 completions on 42 attempts, and Penn State’s strong running game was held to just 1.9 yards per carry.

With this impressive showing now in the books, the Buckeyes are allowing opponents an average of just 10.5 points per game, which is the third-best defensive performance in the country. OSU give up only three yards per carry on the ground, and its secondary has limited opposition QBs to a 49 percent completion rate, which is the lowest in the country. Such a strong all-round defense poses a headache for offensive coordinators, since there is no clear weak point to attack.

If the Badgers hope to pull off an upset on Saturday, then the solution to the Buckeyes’ defense will likely come via the running game. Wisconsin will play this game without starting quarterback Tanner Mordecai, who is out with a broken hand. As a result, Badgers freshman Braedyn Locke will be in at QB. Locke has passed for 362 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the six quarters he has played in relief of Mordecai this season. His performance last week in the team’s win over Illinois earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, but an Ohio State defense stocked full of future NFL players promises to be a much tougher test.

Given all of this, expect the Badgers to lean heavily on their ground game. They will look to feed junior running back Braelon Allen, who is enjoying a brilliant season so far. He is averaging 5.9 yards per carry and has already rushed for 704 yards and eight touchdowns. A Buckeyes defense that gives up just three yards per carry certainly makes for a daunting opponent, so Allen’s ability to find running lanes will be one of the keys to this game. If Ohio State can keep Allen quiet, it could be a one-sided affair.

The Wisconsin defense has also played well this year, which suggests that this could be a low-scoring game. The Badgers are allowing 18.3 points per game, which puts them among the nation’s top 20 defenses. They will need to make life difficult for Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord if they are to have any chance in this one. McCord has been steady, utilizing his playmakers well and not turning over the ball. He hasn’t been intercepted since Week 1, and if he can protect the ball in this one, the Buckeyes should keep their unbeaten record intact.

We can’t discuss the Ohio State offense without mentioning wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. Last week’s win over Penn State was Harrison’s third game with at least 160 receiving yards this season. He also caught his sixth touchdown pass of the year to ice the game. He is potentially the best player in college football, and no one appears to be able to stop him.

The Buckeyes’ offense could get even stronger if running back TreVeyon Henderson returns to the lineup. He is a step up from the Buckeyes’ other backs and can give the team another spark that makes OSU even harder to stop.

Ohio State vs. Wisconsin Prediction and Pick

This is a nightmare matchup for Wisconsin, whose freshman quarterback could find himself out of his depth against an elite defense in just his second career start. The Buckeyes defense has proven itself to be an elite run-stopping unit, and if this game falls on the shoulders of Badgers QB Braedyn Locke, it could get messy. I don’t want to be too harsh on a young quarterback, but Ohio State shut down Drew Allar last week, and I don’t see how the Badgers can stay competitive in this one.

The Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes (-14.5) -110

Picking the Buckeyes to cover and selecting the under does mean that we are giving ourselves a pretty small margin for error in the final score, but I don’t see how this Badgers offense moves the ball this week. The Buckeyes allow just 10.5 points per game, and there is no reason to think Wisconsin can do better than that.

The only risk here is if the Buckeyes score as many as 40 points themselves, which is a possibility given their talent level on offense. That said, I’m giving Wisconsin’s defense a little credit here and predicting that it will be able to stop Ohio State from getting too far ahead.

The Pick: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin Under 45.5 (-115)
