The 6-3 Arizona Wildcats are the next opponents for head coach Deion Sanders and his Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday, and it should be an intriguing matchup in Boulder. Arizona, now ranked 23rd in the country, is well coached and talented on both sides of the ball, so it’s no surprise that the Wildcats enter this game as 10-point favorites. The Buffaloes have been entertaining this season, but Colorado’s offensive line struggles to stop just about everyone – making victories hard to come by. Can the Buffs take advantage of their home field in this one and get a massive victory over a Top 25 team?

Arizona at Colorado Preview

The Colorado Buffaloes go into Saturday’s matchup on a three-game losing streak that has dented all the excitement that surrounded this team at the start of the season. CU’s Shedeur Sanders remains one of the more talented quarterbacks in college football, but a lack of protection from his offensive line has made it almost impossible for him to produce.

Sanders is a powerful and athletic quarterback with explosive playmakers in his receiving corps, which has already helped him reach nearly 3,000 passing yards this season. His 24 touchdowns against only three interceptions are equally impressive -- making everyone wonder how far this team might go if Sanders weren’t constantly escaping the clutches of defensive linemen.

In response to the Buffaloes’ recent struggles, Colorado’s quality control analyst, Pat Shurmur, took over the play-calling duties prior to last Saturday’s game against Oregon State. Shurmur has NFL experience, but the move still came as a surprise to many, because Colorado had been averaging more than 30 points per game. The move demoted Sean Lewis to the role of co-offensive coordinator, but Lewis remains very involved and is working with the quarterbacks. That leaves Shurmur to focus on the offensive line, which is the team’s most problematic area. Sanders was sacked by Oregon State four times, which was better than the seven he endured one week earlier at UCLA, but more improvement is needed.

Another issue for Colorado has been its running attack. An average of only 69 rushing yards per game has the Buffaloes ranked just 130th in the nation in that statistic. They had minus-7 yards on the ground against Oregon State last week, so the rushing issue is another problem in need of drastic improvement. A good running game is a great way to take the pressure off a quarterback and his struggling offensive line, but it is non-existent for Colorado at present. Unfortunately for the Buffaloes, this Arizona defense is ranked 17th in the nation when it comes to stopping the run. It looks like it will be another week where Colorado is forced to rely on Shedeur Sanders’ magic.

The quarterback opposing Colorado this weekend is also enjoying a good season. Redshirt freshman Noah Fifita took over as Arizona’s starting QB in Week 4. After two close losses, Fifita has led the Wildcats to three straight victories. He has thrown for more than 275 yards in all but one of his starts and surpassed 300 yards three times. Fifita is throwing TD passes at an impressive rate as well, notching 14 across his first five games.

The only blemish on Fifita’s impressive season has been the four interceptions he has yielded. While this Buffaloes defense has been easy to move the ball against, it has also been forcing turnovers this year. Fifita is still a young and inexperienced quarterback who might well be susceptible to nerves in front of an intimidating Folsom Field crowd. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders made a name for himself by forcing takeaways, and his team might need one here to swing the game in its direction.

If Colorado can’t force the Wildcats into making mistakes, then Noah Fifita and this talented offensive unit could post a big total on Saturday. Fifita is completing an impressive 76 percent of his passes and benefits from having one of the best receivers in the Pac-12. That would be sophomore Tetairoa McMillan, who has already surpassed his yardage total from last year. He goes into this game having caught 52 passes for a total of 753 yards and seven touchdowns.

McMillan leads a talented receiving group that also features Jacob Cowing (510 yards and nine touchdowns) and tight end Tanner McLachlan (389 yards and two touchdowns). It is a daunting set of pass-catchers who will test a Buffaloes defense that ranks 131st out of 133 teams when it comes to opposing teams’ per-game passing yardage.

To make matters worse, Arizona’s offensive playmaking weapons also include the running back position, where Jonah Coleman has rushed for 565 yards at an average of 6.1 yards per carry. He has also chipped in as a receiver, catching 22 passes for 285 more yards. The Wildcats' offense poses a threat in all phases of the game, which is bad news for a Colorado defense that struggles to stop both the run and pass.

Arizona vs. Colorado Prediction & Pick

The Arizona Wildcats are a well-rounded team that yields only 21.9 points per game on defense (the 34th-best mark in the country) and boasts a wide array of offensive weapons. The Colorado Buffaloes are currently in a slump, and the Wildcats might see this as the perfect time to face them. Arizona’s defense should follow the recent trend of teams of getting to Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and I can’t see Colorado being able to limit Wildcats QB Noah Fifita, receiver Tetairoa McMillan, and running back Jonah Coleman. I expect Arizona to cover the 10.5 points here.

The Pick: Arizona Wildcats -10.5 (110)

As is often the case with teams playing against Colorado, I have no doubt that Arizona will be able to move the ball and put up points. Quarterback Noah Fifita’s 76 percent completion rate suggests he will have no trouble finding his receivers against the 131st-ranked Buffaloes pass defense. I also like Colorado to score points. The Wildcats’ defense has come a long way since last year, but there should still be opportunities for Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders. Pat Shurmur’s increased involvement will have had more time to set in this week, and hopefully, we can see some improved offensive-line play from the Buffaloes as well as quicker passes to Sanders’ explosive receivers.

Sanders remains one of the best quarterbacks in college football, and I back him to help Colorado score some points of their own this week. The potential for garbage-time scoring always comes in handy as well when trying to beat the over.

The Pick: Arizona vs Colorado Over 54.5 (-115)
